Ex-Volkswagen managers convicted of fraud in emissions scandal
A German court has convicted four former Volkswagen managers of fraud and handed down prison sentences to two of them for their part in the manipulation of emissions controls. The verdicts come almost a decade after a scandal erupted over the company's rigging of diesel-engine vehicles. The former head of diesel development was sentenced to four and a half years in prison, and the head of drive train electronics to two years and seven months by the court in Braunschweig, according to German news agency, Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Two others received suspended sentences of 15 months and 10 months. The scandal began in September 2015 when the US Environmental Protection Agency issued a notice of violation, saying that Volkswagen had rigged engine control software that let the cars pass tests while they emitted far more pollution in actual driving. The company has paid more than €29 billion in fines and compensation to vehicle owners. Two VW managers received prison sentences in the United States. Former head of the company's Audi division, Rupert Stadler, was given a suspended sentence of 21 months and a fine of €1.1 million. The sentence is subject to appeal. Missing from the trial, which lasted almost four years, was former chief executive Martin Winterkorn. Proceedings against him have been suspended because of health issues, and it is not clear when he might go on trial. Mr Winterkorn has denied wrongdoing.

A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Spain flies without a pilot for 10 minutes: Report
A flight of German carrier Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Spain went without a pilot for 10 minutes due to a fainting incident in the cockpit last year, a report suggested. According to a report by Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the co-pilot of the flight fainted while he was alone in the cockpit. During the flight from Frankfurt to Seville, Spain, on February 17, 2024, the co-pilot of an Airbus A321 fainted while the captain was in the restroom, dpa reported, referring to a report by the Spanish accident investigation authority CIAIAC. The aircraft, which was carrying 199 passengers and six crew members, flew for around 10 minutes without a pilot in command of the plane, according to the report. Lufthansa told dpa that it was aware of the investigation report and that its own flight safety department had also conducted an investigation. The company is yet to disclose the results of its internal investigation. Although the unconscious co-pilot apparently operated controls unintentionally, the aircraft was able to continue flying in a stable manner thanks to the active autopilot. During the period that the pilot was unconscious, the voice recorder recorded strange noises in the cockpit that were consistent with an acute health emergency, dpa reported. The captain initially tried entering the regular door opening code, which triggers a buzzer in the cockpit so that the co-pilot can open the door. He did so five times without being able to enter the cockpit. A stewardess tried to contact the co-pilot using the onboard telephone. Finally, the captain typed in an emergency code that would have allowed him to open the door on his own. However, shortly before the door would have opened automatically, the co-pilot opened it from the inside despite being ill. The flight made an unplanned landing in Madrid after the captain regained control of the plane. The ill co-pilot was taken to a hospital in the Spanish capital.

While she receives a pension of 590 euros and does not earn much money, she continues to work at the cafe for the joy of it. "But I don't need much. The important thing is that I'm around people. Then I feel good," she says. Nonna Anna has been opening her Bar Centrale daily at 7 am since 1958, which is more than six decades. She closes the cafe at seven in the evening in winter and at nine in summer. The cafe is open 365 days a year. Nonna Anna can be found making coffee even on Sundays and public holidays. "People want to drink their coffee at Christmas too," she says. She does not close the cafe for any personal breaks or holidays. Her last holiday was eight days in Paris in the 1950s. Even at the cafe, she does most of the work alone from morning to night. At the age of 100, she even chops wood for the small stove herself.
