A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Spain flies without a pilot for 10 minutes: Report

Hindustan Times17-05-2025

A flight of German carrier Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Spain went without a pilot for 10 minutes due to a fainting incident in the cockpit last year, a report suggested.
According to a report by Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the co-pilot of the flight fainted while he was alone in the cockpit.
During the flight from Frankfurt to Seville, Spain, on February 17, 2024, the co-pilot of an Airbus A321 fainted while the captain was in the restroom, dpa reported, referring to a report by the Spanish accident investigation authority CIAIAC.
The aircraft, which was carrying 199 passengers and six crew members, flew for around 10 minutes without a pilot in command of the plane, according to the report.
Lufthansa told dpa that it was aware of the investigation report and that its own flight safety department had also conducted an investigation. The company is yet to disclose the results of its internal investigation.
Although the unconscious co-pilot apparently operated controls unintentionally, the aircraft was able to continue flying in a stable manner thanks to the active autopilot.
During the period that the pilot was unconscious, the voice recorder recorded strange noises in the cockpit that were consistent with an acute health emergency, dpa reported.
The captain initially tried entering the regular door opening code, which triggers a buzzer in the cockpit so that the co-pilot can open the door. He did so five times without being able to enter the cockpit. A stewardess tried to contact the co-pilot using the onboard telephone.
Finally, the captain typed in an emergency code that would have allowed him to open the door on his own. However, shortly before the door would have opened automatically, the co-pilot opened it from the inside despite being ill.
The flight made an unplanned landing in Madrid after the captain regained control of the plane. The ill co-pilot was taken to a hospital in the Spanish capital.

German Shepherd 1, Alligator 0: Dog 'Zeus' pulled into pond by alligator, survives attack

A family dog named Zeus, who is named after the father of the gods in Roman mythology, proved true to his name, surviving a close-to-death scene after an alligator dragged him from his backyard into a nearby pond. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On the night of June 2, Zeus had heard a noise from the outside and went out through the doggie door to inspect it. In an instant, an alligator came crashing through the backyard fence and got hold of Zeus, the family said. The German shepherd was then dragged by the alligator from his backyard to a nearby pond, and his owners were quite surprised that he still survived. 'The vet told us the gator had just missed his jugular — it looked like Zeus's entire head had been in the gator's mouth. The fact that he made it out alive is nothing short of a miracle,' the family wrote in a GoFundMe post, as reported by the New York Post. The family had no option but to watch in horror as Zeus struggled with the alligator, as almost the entirety of Zeus's head was in the gator's mouth. Finally, Zeus managed to escape, and the alligator swam off into the pond. After the rescue, Zeus was immediately rushed to a veterinarian hospital for emergency surgery. The family said that they do not feel safe in their own home anymore and have covered the doggie door for now. The family had told WFLA that they had captured a video of the alligator lurking near the bank of the pond earlier that day. The alligator is yet to be captured by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as they have sent out trappers to locate the guilty gator.

How to use articles (a, an, the) correctly for English learners: Essential tips, rules, and examples for better grammar

How to use articles (a, an, the) correctly in English. (AI Image) Articles may be short words, but they are essential in English. Many learners find them confusing, especially if their native language doesn't use articles at all. But once you understand how and when to use "a," "an," and "the," your English will sound much more natural and accurate. Let's explore how these articles work, with examples to guide you. What are articles? Articles are words that come before nouns to give more information about them. In English, there are two types of articles: • Indefinite articles: a and an • Definite article: the Using "a" and "an" – talking about something general Use "a" or "an" when you are talking about something for the first time, or something that is not specific. • Use "a" before words that begin with a consonant sound. Example: I saw a dog in the street. • Use "an" before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). Example: She wants an umbrella because it's raining. Important: It's the sound, not just the letter, that matters. • Correct: He is an honest man. (The "h" in "honest" is silent, so it starts with a vowel sound.) • Correct: She is a university student. ("University" starts with a "yoo" sound, which is a consonant sound.) Using "the" – talking about something specific Use "the" when the person listening or reading already knows what you're talking about, or when there's only one of something. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo • Example: I saw a cat. The cat was sitting on a wall. (We mention the cat for the first time, then refer to it again with "the".) • Example: The sun is shining today. (There's only one sun, so we use "the".) Use "the" for: • Specific people, places, or things: the teacher, the station, the moon • Things mentioned earlier: a book ? the book • Superlatives: the tallest building, the best option • Natural features: the sea, the Amazon River, the Alps • Musical instruments: He plays the piano. • Families or groups: the Smiths, the French When not to use any article Sometimes, no article is needed at all — this is known as the zero article. We leave out articles when speaking in general terms or with certain types of nouns. No article is used: • With plural or uncountable nouns when speaking generally: Books are expensive. (Not: The books are expensive.) Milk is good for you. (Not: The milk, unless specific milk is meant.) • Before names of people and most countries: I met Sarah in India. • With meals, languages, and sports (when speaking generally): We had breakfast. He speaks Spanish. They play football. Helpful tips for learners • Practice reading: Notice how articles are used in books, news, or English subtitles. • Try sentence building: Write or say your own examples using "a," "an," and "the." • Listen actively: Pay attention to how native speakers use articles when they speak. • Use your ear: Sometimes usage is easier to feel once you've heard it enough times. Still confused? That's normal! Articles are one of the trickiest parts of English grammar — even advanced learners make mistakes. Don't worry if you mix them up sometimes. What matters most is that you keep noticing them, keep practising, and keep learning. Over time, with enough reading, speaking, and writing, using articles will become a natural part of your English.
