Valerie Mahaffey, actor who played quirky villains, dies aged 71
Valerie Mahaffey, a character actor with a knack for playing eccentric women who sometimes revealed themselves to be sinister in television shows such as Desperate Housewives, Northern Exposure and Devious Maids, died Friday in Los Angeles. She was 71. The cause was cancer, her husband, actor Joseph Kell, said in a statement. 'I have lost the love of my life.' Mahaffey had worked steadily over the past five decades, starting on the NBC daytime soap opera The Doctors, for which she received a Daytime Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in 1980. Most recently, she appeared in the movie The 8th Day, a crime thriller released in March. She was also known for her guest-starring roles on well-known TV series such as Seinfeld and Grey's Anatomy. She won an Emmy for best supporting actress in 1992 for her work as Eve, a hypochondriac, on the 1990s CBS series Northern Exposure, a drama set in Alaska. She was best known for playing seemingly friendly women who become villainous characters in dramas such as Desperate Housewives, where she appeared in nine episodes. In her Desperate Housewives role, as Alma Hodge, she was a woman who was trapped in a loveless marriage and faked her own death to get back at her husband, hoping he would be blamed for her disappearance. She most recently won acclaim for her work in the 2020 dark comedy French Exit, which earned her a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for her portrayal of Madame Reynard, a scene-stealing eccentric widow. In an interview in 2021 with the Gold Derby, Mahaffey discussed the role, saying: 'I know how to be funny. I've done sitcoms. I know ba-dum-bum humour.' 'Maybe it's this point in my life,' she added. 'I don't want any artifice. And I wanted to play the truth of every moment.'

Eva Longoria put on a show-stopping display in a busty bejewelled gown at Platino Awards after scooping the prestigious Honorary Award on Sunday in Madrid. The Desperate Housewives icon, 50, looked sensational in the glamorous strapless gown, which featured a racy sweetheart neckline. The American actress and producer flaunted her enviable physique in the figure-hugging black number as she posed proudly lifting her prize. The Devious Maids star ensured to capture everyone's attention making a striking appearance at the star-studded red carpet, which was held at Palacio Municipal IFEMA. Eva was snapped posing with confidence for the lense celebrating her well-deserved gong. The brunette beauty kept her jewellery to the minimum, adding a chic statement with pendant diamond earrings. The Honorary Award was previously won by the likes of Benicio Del Toro, Antonio Banderas and Diego Luna - but on Sunday night it was Sofia Vergara to honour Eva in a surprising appearance. The Griselda star told her beloved pal and fellow actress: 'Eva, you're the best. 'Everything you've done, with your foundation, for the children you've helped, for the people you've helped — I mean, you deserve this award.' The Desperate Housewife and Sofia share a long-time friendship as well as a crucial role in promoting Latino culture in the acting industry. The acting pair and close pals were both appointed to the advisory board of the future National Museum of the American Latino in Washington, D.C. Eva looked overwhelmed with joy as she picked up her award prize and warmly hugged the Modern Family favourite. Speaking emotionally to the crowd, Eva said: 'It's a great honor for me to receive this recognition. 'I love being here, especially in this country that I've loved so much for many years. Whenever I'm here, in Spain, I feel at home, I feel happy, I feel … I feel protected, honestly. 'Spain has always treated me very well, me and my whole family.' The actress continued her monologue: 'I don't know if you knew, I was born in Texas. I'm Mexican-American. I have Spanish blood in my veins. The Devious Maids star ensured to capture everyone's attention making a striking appearance at the star-studded red carpet, which was held at Palacio Municipal IFEMA 'And I love the connection between Mexico and Spain. 'And since I started my career in Hollywood, in '98, I've had a dream of proudly representing my countries, and honoring Hispanic women in particular. 'Because Hispanics are always something more. We are more hardworking, we are more passionate, we are more human. 'We are good people. I believe that today in the world more than ever, more than ever, we need that — good people. And that's what we are in Hollywood.' During her appearance on stage, the Land Of Women star revealed that award was dedicated to her husband Jose Baston, 57, and their son Santiago, while emotionally reflecting on the importance they have for her. Paying her family a special tribute, Eva added their support and love have been a constant source of strength throughout her career her both personally and professionally.
