War Of Words Among MPs draws Speaker's Ire
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- A commotion sparked by a war of words among several Members of Parliament drew the ire of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, who described the incident as highly embarrassing. 'What is this? What kind of elected representatives are you? Very shameful of you all, shameful. You're adults, not children, to be quarrelling like this,' he said. The incident followed a verbal clash between government and opposition MPs after the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) by Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (PN-Marang). Chong Zemin (PH-Kampar) stood up citing Standing Order 36(1) of the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, stating that the PAS president did not touch on 13MP at all in his debate. This led to a commotion lasting about seven minutes, involving, among others, opposition MPs Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (Arau), Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (Bachok), Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (Besut) and government MP RSN Rayer (Jelutong), while Suhaizan Kaiat (PH-Pulai) was chairing the session. Johari then entered the chamber to chair the sitting and admonished certain MPs for engaging in heated exchanges, including the use of inappropriate language. 'There are schoolchildren present (in the chamber). I heard from my chamber—MPs cursing, using inappropriate words, all unacceptable. 'If we want this country to progress, our leaders must also progress. This cannot go on,' he said. Johari then instructed the Dewan Rakyat session to proceed with the debate by Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong) without further disruptions.

Opposition leader demands clarity over status, seating arrangement of six MPs no longer with Perikatan
KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has called on the Dewan Rakyat Speaker to clarify the seating arrangement and official status of six MPs who were sacked from Bersatu but have yet to be formally accepted by the government bloc. He said there appeared to be confusion, as the MPs in question no longer belonged to Perikatan Nasional and were also not recognised by the government. 'Where are these six supposed to sit? They've left Perikatan Nasional, but the government side refuses to accept them and claims, 'They're not ours, not part of the government',' he said during a press conference at the Parliament building here on Thursday (Aug 7). Hamzah, who is also Larut MP, urged reporters to verify the matter with Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, saying that Bersatu's Chief Whip Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee had already submitted a formal letter last year. 'So what was the black-and-white that the Speaker referred to yesterday? The Speaker needs to clarify,' he said. Addressing the six MPs directly, Hamzah stressed that they would not be fielded again under Perikatan Nasional in any future election. 'I want to inform these six - you will no longer be our candidates. The government side doesn't want you, and on our side, I'm sorry, we definitely will not accept you again. 100% - these six will not be our candidates. 'I want to make it clear to the public - Perikatan Nasional will not take in individuals who don't know where they stand,' he said. The six MPs in question are Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang). They were issued termination letters by Bersatu on June 12 last year after failing to comply with a party directive to reaffirm loyalty to the party. Eight days later, Bersatu's Ronald Kiandee submitted a notice to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker requesting for their seats to be declared vacant. However, on July 10, 2024, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin revealed that Speaker Johari had informed the party that the six seats would not be vacated. Despite pledging support for the prime minister, the six continue to be seated in the Opposition bloc as no formal notification has been submitted to the Speaker regarding their defection. On Wednesday (Aug 6), Johari clarified that under the Federal Constitution and Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, they remain Opposition MPs. 'There is not a single written statement addressed to me saying they want to leave the Opposition to join the government. 'So for me, they remain in that bloc, and that is why I haven't changed their seating arrangement,' Johari told the House.

Anwar to explain Malaysia's response to US reciprocal tariffs at special Parliament session
KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to explain the government's plans and measures to address the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States at the special Parliament session today. According to the Order Paper published on the Parliament website, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, will address the matter at the special meeting at 11am. 'The Prime Minister will provide an explanation on the US move to impose reciprocal tariffs on all imports and its implications for the Malaysian economy,' it said. Anwar will also outline the government's response across various ministries and sectors, as well as the coordination of short- and medium-term solutions, including a review of existing policies for certain industries. The Prime Minister will also address the country's long-term economic plans to mitigate the impact of the international trade war and ensure the resilience of the Malaysian economy. After the Prime Minister's session, Members of Parliament will have the opportunity to seek clarification and offer their views, after which the relevant ministers will respond to the matters raised. On April 24, the Malaysian Parliament said that the special sitting was convened at the request of the Prime Minister. It was held in accordance with Standing Order 11(3) of the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders to allow pressing issues deemed beneficial to the people. The ministerial briefing under Standing Order 14(1)(i) will cover the US action to impose reciprocal tariffs on all imports of the country, its impact on Malaysia, and the government's coordinated measures. On April 9, the US administration announced a 90-day pause on tariffs for most countries, while maintaining the 10 per cent base tariff. The decision was made to facilitate negotiations with over 75 countries, including Malaysia, which had voiced concern over the sudden imposition of the tariffs. — Bernama
