Indians react to Karan Johar's new reality show, The Traitors. ‘Have some mercy on us'

'What is this ameero ka off season Splitsvilla?' wrote one Instagram user under Karan Johar's post. Another one wrote: 'The game we played on school trips and holidays is now basically a reality show.' The trailer has generated great interest among Indian viewers, who have all started sharing their two cents on social media. New Delhi: The highly-anticipated Indian version of reality show The Traitors will see Karan Johar play host to 20 contestants. The trailer, which dropped on Thursday, will see 'Rebel Kid' Apoorva Mukhija match her wit and cunning with actor Arjun Kapoor's sister Anshula Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty's husband Raj Kundra, Maheep Kapoor from Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, and other celebrities. People have also started naming their favourite contestants, such as influencer Apoorva Mukhija; others have compared it to the multiplayer online game 'Among Us'. Johar's post has garnered over 23,000 likes in five hours, and has 21,700 reshares so far. The Traitors The treachery and trickery will unfold at Suryagarh Palace in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The show will stream on Amazon Prime Video starting 12 June, with new episodes every Thursday at 8 pm. The three-minute trailer also features Telugu actress Lakshmi Manchu, and television stars Jannat Zubair, Jasmin Bhasin, and Karan Kundrra. All the contestants have a spicy backstory. Mukhija's remarks on Samay Raina's YouTube show India's Got Latent with podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia triggered social media outrage and led to multiple FIRs. Uorfi Javed is known for her daring costumes and her own reality TV show, Follow Kar Lo Yaar (2024). The Traitors will also feature fashion commentator Sufi Motiwala, who is represented by Karan Johar's Dharma Cornerstone Agency (DCA). They all have a single objective: to win the Rs 1 crore prize money after completing a series of physical and psychological missions. Players marked 'innocents' must find and eliminate the 'traitors' from among them, who will be secretly chosen at the beginning of the show by host Karan Johar. The reality show is based on the Dutch series De Verraders (2021), which has iterations in 30 countries. The American version is hosted by Alan Cumming and the British version by Claudia Winkleman. Game of trust, deception In the trailer, Karan Johar is dressed head-to-toe in a black, magician-like ensemble. Viewers are privy to snatches of contestants trying to figure out who the traitors are. In the clip, Uorfi Javed vows to shave her head if found to be a 'traitor', while rapper Raftaar, also a contestant on the show, says that he will 'stop rapping'. 'Yaha trust is rare, but dhoka everywhere (Trust is rare here, but deception is everywhere),' declares Johar. Some people, however, have criticised the Bollywood filmmaker for taking up the project. 'You'll do anything at this point to avoid directing a movie…who are you Riri? Wrote one Instagram user. Another one expressed disappointment at the content itself: 'Indians are fed up of seeing content like this! With the likes of Karan Johar and others! Same thing, old wine, new bottle. Have some mercy on us and give us good content.' (Edited by Zoya Bhatti)

‘Ranbir Kapoor doesn't mind standing in queues or eating alone in cafes': Former film journalist praises star's humility

Actor Ranbir Kapoor prefers to keep a low profile, especially when it comes to his personal life. Now, new details have emerged about his off-screen persona, offering a glimpse into his down-to-earth nature. It has been revealed that he likes going to the airport without his team and eating at cafes alone. Also read: Ranbir Kapoor's fame, praise for Animal doesn't matter, says brother-in-law Rahul Bhatt: 'Bas ek cheez matter karti hai' During a conversation with IndiaTV ShowBiz, former film journalist and Dharma Cornerstone Agency COO Rajeev Masand spoke about Ranbir's nature and his habit of walking around without an entourage. Rajeev said, 'I was standing in a queue at an airport and I saw Ranbir standing there alone. It's not a sight that you see of actors; they are never alone. I asked him, 'Where is your team?' He said, 'What team?' This might sound strange to common people, but I would like to tell them that actors don't stand alone; they have an army of people. Then he stepped outside the airport, and he had someone waiting for him outside, but he was all alone at the airport.' He further shared that several filmmakers have expressed similar sentiments about Ranbir. Rajeev added, 'I have heard from filmmakers that when they would break for lunch while shooting abroad, they would find him eating food alone at some cafe. That's the mark of an intelligent actor. It stems from the fact that he thinks that he needs to be in touch with the real world to be able to play those characters authentically". Earlier in an interview with Biz Asia, Ranbir, who is married to Alia Bhatt, admitted that staying off social media is a conscious decision. He said, 'I agree that through social media, you have a reach to the larger audience, but I don't miss it and I am fine being away from it. Never say never, maybe tomorrow, I will come, but right now, I am happy being away from it.' At the moment, Ranbir is busy with Nitesh Tiwari's screen adaptation of Ramayan. Ranbir is all set to play the role of Lord Ram, while Sai Pallavi will be playing Sita. If the latest reports are to believed Kajal Aggarwal has also joined the star-studded cast of the film. She is said to be on board for the role of Mandodari. Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana boasts an ensemble cast, including Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Yash as Ravana. The film also stars Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey, and Lara Dutta in pivotal roles. It is set to release in two parts, with the first part scheduled for Diwali 2026 and the second part in 2027.

'I have heard from filmmakers...': Ranbir Kapoor eats alone at cafes while shooting abroad, doesn't have team; reveals Dharma Cornerstone Agency COO

Ranbir Kapoor is known for maintaining a low-key life, away from the limelight of showbiz, especially when he is not promoting his movies. The actor, with no official social media presence, is barely seen making appearances at star-studded events. While several Bollywood stars like to travel with their army of entourage, Kapoor prefers to ditch them. He even enjoys eating food alone at a café while shooting abroad. During an interaction with IndiaTV ShowBiz, Rajeev Masand, the COO of Dharma Cornerstone Agency, made some interesting revelations about Ranbir Kapoor. He said that the Saawariya debutant doesn't prefer to be constantly surrounded by his team, unlike many B-town celebs who travel with a big entourage. Recalling an encounter with RK at the airport, Masand stated that he saw the Rockstar actor standing quietly in a queue at an airport, alone. 'It's not a sight that you see of actors; they are never alone,' he opined. When Rajeev asked the superstar about his team, Kapoor politely responded, 'What team?' clarifying that he was there all by himself. The actor then exited the airport and was received by someone. Rajeev went on to state that while this is normal for common people, celebs as successful and popular as Ranbir have an army of people. The COO shared another story that would make you respect the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actor even more. Rajeev stated that he has heard from filmmakers that when they would break for lunch while shooting abroad, they would find Neetu Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor's son eating food alone at some cafe. 'That's the mark of an intelligent actor,' stated Masand, adding that this proves that RK needs to be in touch with the real world to be able to play those characters authentically. Coming to Ranbir Kapoor's work front, he will be next seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War, alongside his wife and actress, Alia Bhatt. The couple will also be joined by Vicky Kaushal in the upcoming entertainer. Apart from that, he will also be part of Nitesh Tiwari-directed Ramayana with actors Yash, Sai Pallavi, and Sunny Deol.

Ranbir Kapoor Skips Celebrity Privilege, Says Rajeev Masand: ‘Stands In Queues, Eats Alone'

Last Updated: Ranbir Kapoor stands out in Bollywood with no PR or social media, managing his own schedule. Rajeev Masand praises his grounded approach, simplicity, and authenticity. At a time when most Bollywood stars are flanked by entourages and driven by social media presence, Ranbir Kapoor continues to stand apart — quietly redefining what it means to be a superstar. With no personal PR machinery, no official social media presence, and often seen managing his own schedule, the Animal actor's low-key approach to stardom is now being applauded. In a recent conversation on IndiaTV ShowBiz, former film journalist and Dharma Cornerstone Agency COO Rajeev Masand shared an anecdote that sums up Ranbir's refreshing simplicity. 'I was in a queue at the airport and saw Ranbir standing alone. No assistant, no team. It's not something you see with celebrities — they're usually surrounded by people," Rajeev recounted. 'I asked him, 'Where is your team?' and he just replied, 'What team?'" Masand emphasized how unusual this is in today's film industry, where even a routine airport appearance is often treated like a red carpet moment, complete with stylists, managers, and paparazzi. 'When he walked out, sure, someone was there to pick him up. But till then, it was just him, like any other passenger," he said. Ranbir's minimalist attitude doesn't just stop at airports. Masand added that even on foreign shoots, directors have mentioned spotting him having lunch alone in local cafés. 'It's who he is. I think that ability to blend in, to remain grounded, is what makes him such an intelligent actor. He believes staying connected to real life helps him portray characters more authentically." Ranbir himself has touched upon this approach in earlier interviews. Speaking about his absence from social media, he said, 'I understand the power of social media and how it connects you with fans. But I'm okay not being part of it right now. Maybe someday I'll join, but I'm content staying away for now." First Published:
