Indians react to Karan Johar's new reality show, The Traitors. ‘Have some mercy on us'
The trailer has generated great interest among Indian viewers, who have all started sharing their two cents on social media.
New Delhi: The highly-anticipated Indian version of reality show The Traitors will see Karan Johar play host to 20 contestants. The trailer, which dropped on Thursday, will see 'Rebel Kid' Apoorva Mukhija match her wit and cunning with actor Arjun Kapoor's sister Anshula Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty's husband Raj Kundra, Maheep Kapoor from Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, and other celebrities.
People have also started naming their favourite contestants, such as influencer Apoorva Mukhija; others have compared it to the multiplayer online game 'Among Us'. Johar's post has garnered over 23,000 likes in five hours, and has 21,700 reshares so far.
The Traitors
The treachery and trickery will unfold at Suryagarh Palace in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The show will stream on Amazon Prime Video starting 12 June, with new episodes every Thursday at 8 pm. The three-minute trailer also features Telugu actress Lakshmi Manchu, and television stars Jannat Zubair, Jasmin Bhasin, and Karan Kundrra.
All the contestants have a spicy backstory. Mukhija's remarks on Samay Raina's YouTube show India's Got Latent with podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia triggered social media outrage and led to multiple FIRs. Uorfi Javed is known for her daring costumes and her own reality TV show, Follow Kar Lo Yaar (2024). The Traitors will also feature fashion commentator Sufi Motiwala, who is represented by Karan Johar's Dharma Cornerstone Agency (DCA).
They all have a single objective: to win the Rs 1 crore prize money after completing a series of physical and psychological missions. Players marked 'innocents' must find and eliminate the 'traitors' from among them, who will be secretly chosen at the beginning of the show by host Karan Johar.
The reality show is based on the Dutch series De Verraders (2021), which has iterations in 30 countries. The American version is hosted by Alan Cumming and the British version by Claudia Winkleman.
Game of trust, deception
In the trailer, Karan Johar is dressed head-to-toe in a black, magician-like ensemble. Viewers are privy to snatches of contestants trying to figure out who the traitors are.
In the clip, Uorfi Javed vows to shave her head if found to be a 'traitor', while rapper Raftaar, also a contestant on the show, says that he will 'stop rapping'. 'Yaha trust is rare, but dhoka everywhere (Trust is rare here, but deception is everywhere),' declares Johar.
Some people, however, have criticised the Bollywood filmmaker for taking up the project. 'You'll do anything at this point to avoid directing a movie…who are you Riri? Wrote one Instagram user. Another one expressed disappointment at the content itself: 'Indians are fed up of seeing content like this! With the likes of Karan Johar and others! Same thing, old wine, new bottle. Have some mercy on us and give us good content.'

The family had no money, carried little food, and possessed only a few pieces of clothing. Helen revealed that her family was part of a larger migration group with the goal of reaching Dibrugarh in Assam, nearly 900 kilometers away. By the time they arrived, the group's numbers had been halved—some had succumbed to illness, some were left behind, and others perished from starvation. In the same interview, she shared that her mother, who had been pregnant during the journey, suffered a decades later to her stepson Arbaaz Khan on Bollywood Bubble, Helen recalled that there were roughly 300 to 350 people in their migration party. For her own family, it was just her mother, her younger brother, and herself—both children at the time. Her mother's pregnancy ended tragically during the journey, and she lost the baby girl who would have been Helen's younger finally reaching Assam, Helen's entire family was hospitalised due to exhaustion and illness. Once recovered, they relocated to Kolkata. But tragedy struck again when Helen's younger brother, who had been in critical condition upon arrival in India, contracted smallpox and died shortly thereafter. The family eventually moved to Mumbai, but the financial strain of city life proved overwhelming. Helen's mother found it increasingly difficult to cover even basic expenses.A lifeline appeared in the form of Cuckoo, a renowned Bollywood dancer and a family friend, who decided to help Helen. In an interview with , Helen recalled that she initially worked as a chorus dancer in various films before landing solo performances in Alif Laila (1953) and Hoor-e-Arab (1955). However, her career's pivotal turning point came in 1958 when she performed the now-iconic 'Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo' sequence in Shakti Samanta's Howrah Bridge. Composer O.P. Nayyar's lively score provided the perfect backdrop, and Helen's captivating performance at just 19 years old solidified her place in the industry. This success came at the cost of her formal education, which she abandoned to support her mother and manage household Howrah Bridge, Helen became one of Bollywood's most recognisable performers, known for her unique style and commanding stage presence. She frequently collaborated with celebrated playback singer Geeta Dutt, whose voice complemented Helen's on-screen persona in numerous productions. With the encouragement and professional support of screenwriter Salim Khan—whom she married in 1981—Helen began securing more prominent roles. Mukesh Rishi says his army background helped him understand the world of ‘Salakaar'
Mumbai: Actor Mukesh Rishi, who essays the role of Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq in the recently released streaming series 'Salakaar', has shared that his army background came in handy to understand the world of 'Salakaar'. The series revolves around an Indian spy who is sent on a mission to Pakistan and navigates through his professional and personal life. Mukesh was quite impressed by the story and hence decided to come on board. He said, 'When I heard the story, I liked it. I found it very interesting. The kind of research that director Faruk Kabir had done and the level of preparation he did made me want to work with him on this project. His professionalism and overall involvement in the project drew me to it'. Mukesh essays the role of Pakistani military dictator, Zia-ul-Haq in the series. Zia is the bedrock of most of India's problems. He was the second Pakistani dictator after General Ayub Khan. He gave a definitive form to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's plan of 'Bleed India by thousand cuts', a thousand year war declared against India for Pakistan's own interest. Later, Zia got Zulfikar Ali Bhutto framed in a case, and got the death penalty approved for him through hand-picked judges. Talking about his role as Zia, and how he prepared for it, he said, "I tried to do some research online. Also, I have an army background and have a little knowledge of the army. So that helped me. There was a particular get-up and dress-up. And since my character is from Pakistan, we looked at the photos available online and heard them for the mannerism part'. When asked what element of the series he enjoyed the most, he said, 'After working for so many years, I have realized that every episode of a show should be good. The story should not be long but just brief enough for the audience to enjoy it'. "I know almost everyone; they are very capable actors, so you get to see their influence in the series. Sometimes it is not necessary how much work we have done with them; sometimes it is about how they have done their work. So I feel they all have given their best and done a good job', he added.
