India's DAP imports from China fall to 97,000 tonnes in July amid new rules
India's import of Di Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) from China has declined sharply and stood at 97,000 tonnes in July this year, Parliament was informed on Friday. DAP is the second most consumed fertiliser after urea in India. Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Anupriya Patel said DAP import from China declined from approximately 22.28 lakh tonnes in 2023-24 to about 8.47 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 as reported by fertiliser companies. "In July 2025, approximately 0.97 lakh tonnes of DAP have been imported from China," the minister said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilisers, including DAP, are under Open General License (OGL). The fertiliser companies are free to import/manufacture these fertilisers as per their business dynamics. Citing reasons for the decline in DAP import, the minister said in October 2021, China amended its catalogue of commodities requiring mandatory additional inspection prior to export of fertiliser-related items, including DAP. The regulatory requirement led to an increase in the CFR (Cost and Freight) price of DAP for India from USD 542 per tonne in April 2024 to approximately USD 800 per tonne in July 2025. The minister said Ammonium Phosphate Sulphate (APS) may serve as a partial alternative to DAP, particularly in sulphur-deficient soils and for sulphur-demanding crops. APS supplies nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur, but contains a lower phosphorus content of 20 per cent as compared to 46 per cent in DAP. Thus, APS is a crop- and soil-specific supplement. Adequate availability of fertilisers in Maharashtra this Kharif season: Govt
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) There is 'adequate" availability of fertilisers in Maharashtra during the ongoing Kharif 2025 season, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. Additionally, the state has maintained a buffer stock of 76,000 tonnes of urea and 13,000 tonnes of DAP (Di Ammonium Phosphate), Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Anupriya Patel said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. As per the data, Maharashtra's fertiliser supply position for Kharif 2025, as of July 24, demonstrates robust coverage of seasonal requirements across all major product categories. For urea, the state required 15.52 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of the fertiliser for the Kharif season. Up to July 24, the pro rata requirement stood at 9.59 LMT, while availability was significantly higher at 14.12 LMT. Sales during the period were 10.36 LMT with a closing stock of 3.76 LMT, indicating not only strong supply but also a healthy buffer to meet any further surges in demand. In the case of DAP, Maharashtra's total seasonal requirement was 4.60 LMT, with a pro rata requirement till July 24 of 2.94 LMT. Availability by this cutoff was 3.02 LMT, just above the requirement, while sales were at 1.92 LMT. The resulting closing stock was 1.10 LMT, which, despite slower sales relative to pro rata needs, provides a comfortable supply position and ensures that immediate shortages are unlikely. MOP (Muriate of Potash) showed an even stronger surplus position. Against a seasonal target of 1.20 LMT and a pro rata requirement of just 0.63 LMT, Maharashtra had made available 1.87 LMT. Sales reached 1.04 LMT – well ahead of the expected drawdown – leaving a closing stock of 0.84 LMT. This significant buffer demonstrates prudent procurement and distribution that can easily accommodate any rise in crop nutrient demand mid-season. For NPKS (complex fertilisers), the scenario was also notably positive. The requirement for the season was 18.00 LMT, with the pro rata till July 24 being 10.59 LMT. With 20.55 LMT made available and sales touching 12.76 LMT, closing stock stood high at 7.70 LMT. Both availability and utilisation figures are much higher than the benchmark for the period, reflecting proactive management and smooth supply chain functioning for this essential category, the data showed. The government monitors the movement of all major subsidised fertilisers across the country through an online web-based monitoring system called Integrated Fertilizer Monitoring System (iFMS). Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Anupriya Patel, in her written reply to the Rajya Sabha, said the government is not directly involved in setting up of nano fertiliser plants across the country. Overall seven nano-urea plants have been set up by fertiliser companies with a total production capacity of all these nano-urea plants presently in operation at 27.22 crore bottles (500 ml each) per annum. Further, three nano DAP (Di Ammonium Phosphate) plants have been set up by fertilizer companies with a total production capacity of all these nano DAP plants presently in operation at 7.64 crore bottles (500 ml each) per annum. In addition to this, 'PSUs and other fertilizer companies have intimated about setting up of 3 more nano fertilizer plants, with a total production capacity of 17 crore bottles (500 ml equivalent) per annum," she said. The minister said since inception, fertilizer companies have sold 10.68 crore bottles (500 ml each) of nano urea and 2.75 crore bottles (500 ml each) of nano DAP across all regions of the nation, including tribal-dominated regions. The minister highlighted the steps taken to promote the use of nano fertilisers and said the central government has pursued with the states on use of nano fertilisers at various forums. Nano-urea and nano-DAP are made available at Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendras (PMKSKs) by the companies. Nano-urea has been included under the monthly supply plan issued by the Department of Fertilizers regularly. The ministry in collaboration with fertilizer companies has initiated a Maha Abhiyan for adoption of Nano DAP in all 15 agro-climatic zones of the country through consultations and field-level demonstrations. Further, the ministry in collaboration with fertilizer companies has also launched campaigns for field-level demonstrations and awareness programs of nano-urea plus in 100 districts of the country, she added. IFFCO profit rises 16% to 2,823 cr, revenue up 4.5% to Rs 41,244 cr
Fertilizer major IFFCO on Thursday reported a 16 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 2,823 crore and a 4.5 per cent growth in turnover to Rs 41,244 crore during the last fiscal on higher sales of conventional soil nutrients as well as nano liquid urea and nano liquid DAP. It had posted a net profit of Rs 2,443 crore and turnover of Rs 39,474 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal. Cooperative IFFCO Managing Director U S Awasthi highlighted that sales of nano fertilisers rose 46 per cent last fiscal to 364.41 lakh bottles (of 500 ml each) but rued that "growth in sale volumes is not as per the expectation". Asserting that the nano fertilisers are effective if application is done in prescribed manner, he said the cooperative is focusing on creating awareness about the benefits of the new products. It is investing a lot on purchasing drones for spraying nano liquid. He said the cooperative has got a good response for nano-fertilisers in overseas markets, including Brazil and the United States. "We have invested so far around Rs 2500 crore on nano-fertilisers, which includes Rs 1700 crore on setting up plants," Awasthi said, while committing more investments to bring new nano products in the market and also creating awareness among farmers. He noted that crop productivity increases with the usage of nano fertilisers and rejected any concerns related to efficacy of this product. The IFFCO MD said the cooperative does not mind losing money, if it is for the right cause which is to protect soil health. Awasthi said the IFFCO has already launched nano-liquid zinc and nano-liquid copper in 100 ml bottles, costing Rs 200 each. It also plans to launch nano NPK fertilisers in granular form for soil application in basal dose. Elaborating on financial and operational performances, IFFCO chairman Dileep Sanghani said, the co-operative has "registered a profit (before tax) of more than Rs 3,000 crore for three consecutive financial years". The cooperative has rewarded its members with 20 per cent dividend in the paid up shares capital, he added. Total fertilizer production rose to 93.10 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 from 88.95 lakh tonnes in the preceding year, while sale increased slightly to 113.78 lakh tonnes as against 111.73 lakh tonnes. Nano fertiliser sales were at 364.41 lakh bottles (of 500 ml each) in 2024-25, higher than 249.45 lakh bottles in the previous year. Urea and Di Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) sales remained flat at 67.32 lakh tonnes and 25.62 lakh tonnes, respectively, during 2024-25. IFFCO, which has more than 35,600 cooperative societies as its members, is one of the leading fertilizer manufacturers in the country and has 10 plants in India and abroad.
