MediaTek Dimensity 9500: Major GPU upgrades and why gamers should care

MediaTek's new Dimensity 9500 chipset isn't just another annual refresh, it's a leap aimed squarely at gamers. With a redesigned GPU and serious efficiency gains, it promises to push flagship Android gaming in 2025 into desktop-grade territory. Expect smoother frame rates, sharper visuals, and longer sessions without cooking your phone. The Dimensity 9500 debuts the Immortalis-Drage (Mali-G1-Ultra MC12) GPU, delivering a 40% boost in efficiency and ray tracing performance over its predecessor. For gamers, that means hardware-accelerated ray tracing isn't just marketing, it's real. Expect more lifelike lighting, accurate reflections, and cinematic shadows in supported titles. Essentially, mobile graphics are edging closer to what you'd expect from a mid-range gaming rig. The payoff is raw performance. With the Dimensity 9500, frame rates over 100fps with ray tracing enabled are achievable on popular titles like Diablo Immortal and War Thunder. That translates into smoother textures, sharper environments, and more fluid gameplay even when the screen is jam-packed with effects. Built on TSMC's 3 nm N3P process, it manages all this without wrecking your battery life or making your phone uncomfortably hot. Here's what gamers will actually feel in daily use: Longer play sessions : Efficiency upgrades mean less thermal throttling, so games don't suddenly tank in performance. : Efficiency upgrades mean less thermal throttling, so games don't suddenly tank in performance. AI integration: With 100 TOPS of NPU power, expect smarter AI-driven in-game mechanics and enhanced live-streaming camera effects. In short, the Dimensity 9500 isn't just about numbers, it's about a more reliable, immersive gaming experience. The 9500 launches ahead of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, giving MediaTek a head start in the 2025 flagship race. It's already confirmed for upcoming gaming phones from brands like OPPO and Vivo. Support for LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage ensures lightning-fast load times and smooth multitasking. Coupled with CPU and GPU upgrades, it's built to handle both today's heavy hitters and the next wave of graphically demanding mobile titles.

Former Gears of War boss becomes former Diablo boss as Rod Fergusson leaves Microsoft a third time, "sword in hand," after 5 years overseeing the ARPG series: "I'm proud of what we've built"

In an ironic twist of gaming history, Rod Fergusson is leaving a position at Microsoft for the third time in his decades-long industry career. He announced via social media today that he's leaving Blizzard after five years of overseeing the Diablo franchise to move onto as-yet-undetailed new pastures. "After five years driving the Diablo franchise with four big launches, it's time to step away from Blizzard/Microsoft, sword in hand, and see what's next," Fergusson says on Bluesky. "I'm proud of what we've built and excited for what's ahead for Diablo, and for me." Those "four big launches" are, presumably, referring to Diablo 2: Resurrected, Diablo Immortal, Diablo 4, and its expansion Vessel of Hatred. Those titles represent quite a rollercoaster for the community's response to the series over the years, but the highs represent a pretty thorough cementing of Diablo as a major franchise after years of dormancy. Fergusson started his career at Microsoft in 1996, long before "Xbox" was even a twinkle in anybody's eye, but he eventually worked to support games ranging from Microsoft Train Simulator on PC to Xbox launch title Blood Wake. After working with Epic to develop Gears of War, he eventually jumped ship to the latter studio in order to get the third-person shooter ready for launch on Xbox 360. He then spent seven years at Epic and two years at BioShock developer Irrational Games, but eventually came back to Microsoft in 2014 to lead the Gears of War franchise at the studio that would become known as The Coalition. After the launches of Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, Fergusson then moved on to lead the Diablo franchise at Blizzard – which, through a multi-billion dollar twist of history, would eventually see him rejoining Microsoft once again. "You brought strength, hellfire, and vision to one of gaming's most iconic franchises," Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in response to Fergusson's departure. "Playing Diablo IV with you was a blast – thanks for everything you gave to the game and the community." As for the Diablo series itself, apparently we'll see Fergusson's fingerprints for some time to come. The official Diablo account says Fergusson has "set Diablo up for an amazing year forward." Meanwhile, the Microsoft bloodbath continues 9,000 layoffs later with the death of Contraband, the '70s co-op game from the studio behind open-world hit Just Cause, and it seems Hideo Kojima's OD is the only thing that's safe.

Diablo and Berserk join forces in a shocking new crossover

Diablo and Berserk join forces in a shocking new crossover In an unexpected but exciting move, Blizzard Entertainment has teamed up with the legendary manga Berserk for a brand-new crossover event. The collaboration brings the dark and intense world of Kentaro Miura's manga into both Diablo Immortal and Diablo IV, two popular games from the Diablo franchise. This is the first time Blizzard has ever worked with a non-Blizzard IP, making this partnership a big deal for both fans of video games and manga. For those unfamiliar, Berserk is a brutal dark fantasy series that follows the story of Guts, a warrior with a tragic past, fighting demons and betrayal in a cursed world. The manga is known for its deep storytelling, stunning art, and emotional weight. Now, players will get the chance to experience this world in-game with special cosmetics, bosses, and gameplay inspired by Berserk. The crossover event is split across two games: Diablo Immortal's event 'Struggler's Path' runs from May 1 to May 30 Diablo IV's event begins on May 6 and will run until the end of Season 8 Berserk x Diablo IV Diablo IV x Berserk | Animated Trailer In Diablo IV, players can become the Black Swordsman himself. Starting May 6, slaying powerful enemies may drop Behelits — strange, egg-like items from Berserk lore that can be traded for exclusive rewards. These include legendary items like the Brand of Sacrifice, Skull Knight's Mount Armour, and the Hawk's Destiny back trophy, inspired by the fallen warrior Griffith. Once you collect all Berserk-themed rewards, you'll unlock the Od of the Berserker Emblem, a badge that symbolises strength, sacrifice, and survival — themes central to both Diablo and Berserk. There's also a new in-game shop collection, where players can buy iconic armours: The Berserker Armour for the Barbarian class The Skull Knight set for Necromancer The Hawk of Light and The Struggler for Rogues And a cute (but creepy) Schnoz Pet Bundle, featuring a mysterious creature from Berserk's astral world Players can also ride into battle with the Warhorse of the Hawk, complete with themed mount trophies linked to the Band of the Hawk and the evil Godhand. Berserk x Diablo Immortal Diablo Immortal x Berserk | Struggler's Path | Cinematic Trailer In Diablo Immortal, the 'Struggler's Path' event lets players fight Nosferatu Zodd, a powerful, immortal warrior from Berserk. There's a special mode called Struggler's Bane, which takes players into the Eclipse — a horrifying moment from the manga when the Band of the Hawk is betrayed and sacrificed. New Legendary Gems like the Crimson Behelit add powerful effects during battle, and players can also unlock Berserk-inspired weapon skins, Golem familiars, and armour sets for Guts and Griffith. Just logging into the game during the event will reward players with free items like the Struggler's Path weapon skin, Eclipse portal cosmetics, and Legendary Crests.
