Jagannath Temple's 83-year-old servitor killed after argument with neighbour

Bhubaneswar: An 83-year-old servitor of Jagannath Temple was found dead just outside his house in the temple town of Puri on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The temple servitor, identified by the police as Jagannath Dikshit, who worked as a Mahasuara of the temple. He was found with severe injuries to his head near his house in Gudiasahi, a little after 3pm, after he returned from the temple. Police said they are scrutinising the CCTV footage showing Narayan Pattajoshi, a neighbour of Dikshit, allegedly throwing him on the road. People in the locality said an argument had taken place between Dikshit and Pattajoshi shortly before the assault. The accused is on the run. Puri superintendent of police (SP) Vinit Agrawal said the murder appears to be a fallout of personal enmity. 'Preliminary probe suggests that the incident occurred due to past enmity and it will become clearer after further investigation. Efforts are on to apprehend the accused,' Agrawal said. Diskhit was unmarried and lived alone. The murder was reported hours after chief minister Mohan Majhi visited the temple town on the occasion of Snana Paurnima when the three deities - Lord Jagannath along with his sibling - Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadhra - are bathed in holy waters.

"If they want war, they will get war": Congress' Sandeep Dikshit hits out at Pakistan

New Delhi [India], May 9 (ANI): Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit on Friday lashed out at Pakistan amidst heightened tensions and escalation, stating that the actions undertaken by the neighbouring country and its army were 'cowardly'. He said that Pakistan doesn't dare to 'fight with dignity' since it was attacking India's cities and civilians in Poonch. 'We attacked their terror hotspots, and they attacked our civilians. If they want war, then they will get war,' Dikshit told ANI, adding, 'All the acts done by Pakistan and its army are cowardly. They do not have the courage to fight with dignity. Killing innocent civilians in Pahalgam was that not cowardice? Tell me one thing they have done with dignity in the last 40-50 years.' He stated that Pakistan was 'trapped' between its destruction and the fight for its 'fake self-respect'. 'The Pakistan army cannot grasp the beehive they have disturbed... We have practised restraint earlier. Now, Pakistan is trapped. On one side, there is its destruction, and on the other side, there is this fight for its fake self-respect,' Dikshit said. Meanwhile, Congress leader Pawan Khera asserted that the neighbouring country must understand that India remains superior in technology. He said that India's credibility was also greater since, unlike Pakistan, it doesn't attack civilian establishments. Khera said that India has only attacked terrorist camps, which was in response to the ghastly Pahalgam terrorist attack, but Pakistan was attacking civilian areas. 'Pakistan should understand that India had technical superiority. India's credibility across the globe is more since we are not like Pakistan, which would attack civilian establishments. We have only attacked terrorist camps in response (to Pahalgam terror attack). Pakistan is still not ready to stop its misdeeds. They are still trying to attack civilian areas. The global community needs to pay attention to this,' Khera told ANI. This comes as India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads against each other after terrorist camps were destroyed at nine locations in the neigbouring country under Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the ghastly Pahalgam terrorist attack. The Border Security Forces (BSF) foiled a major infiltration attempt along the International Boundary in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir earlier. Additionally, defence sources confirmed that the Indian Army shot down two Pakistani drones in the Naushera sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The drones were intercepted amid a heavy exchange of artillery fire between Indian and Pakistani forces. (ANI)

AAP in turmoil, losing members to BJP: Sandeep Dikshit

New Delhi: Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit on Monday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over its reported decision not to contest the upcoming Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) Mayor elections, saying the party is in turmoil and losing ground to the BJP. Speaking to IANS, Dikshit said the move reflects internal instability and a weakening grip of the party, especially as several of its members and supporters have recently switched allegiance to the BJP. 'It's possible that their councillors or supporters may have left. There's some turmoil within the Aam Aadmi Party, with members shifting to the BJP. That's something they need to handle,' Dikshit said, responding to AAP's withdrawal from the mayoral contest. He added, 'Personally, I consider it unfortunate. No matter which party it is, when someone gets elected under a party's symbol and then leaves for another party, I find that unethical and wrong.' Addressing a press conference, former Delhi Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, said, 'The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will play the role of a strong Opposition in the MCD as well. BJP did a lot of rigging during the MCD elections but still it lost badly. Even after this, it did not stop and all the councillors were poached.' She said her party does not believe in the 'politics of sabotage and horse-trading' and has, therefore, decided not to participate in the mayoral contest. Sandeep Dikshit also weighed in on other issues, including Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi's, recent comments made during his US tour, in which he questioned the functioning of the Election Commission, citing discrepancies in vote counts in Maharashtra. 'This is a common topic of discussion these days. What exactly is the Election Commission doing? Suddenly, after one election, there's a massive surge in votes, figures that were never there before and all those additional votes end up going to the BJP,' Dikshit said. 'It's not just Rahul Gandhi or any one individual raising these concerns, these questions are being raised by the facts themselves,' he said. While addressing the Indian diaspora in Boston, LoP Gandhi alleged that the Election Commission in India was 'compromised'.
