Leaders pay tribute to ex-CM Sheila Dikshit on 6th death anniversary

The Hindu20-07-2025
Cutting across party lines, senior leaders such as Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal, and Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav, paid tributes to the longest-serving Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit, on her sixth death anniversary on Sunday.
'Humble tribute on the death anniversary of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshitji,' Ms. Gupta wrote on X. In a post on the social media platform, Mr. Kejriwal said, 'On the death anniversary of Delhi's former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, I pay my homage to her.'
Mr. Yadav, along with several Congress leaders and workers, paid floral tributes to Dikshit at the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee office. Attacking the BJP and AAP on the occasion, he said the welfare schemes introduced by Dikshit for slum dwellers, street vendors, Dalits, minorities, and the marginalised have nearly been shut down by the former AAP government and the present BJP regime.
'Delhi had witnessed massive development when the Congress government, headed by Dikshit, was in power for 15 years and came to be known as the golden era of Delhi. The Delhi metro, flyovers, underpasses, CNG fleet of public transport, including DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation), well-paved roads, modern hospitals, new universities, colleges, and schools, and green cover changed the face of the Capital,' he said.
Mr. Yadav said the people of Delhi still remember Dikshit for the 'unprecedented development works carried out' during her tenure as the CM.

Remembering Satyapal Malik: At Khatkar toll plaza, khaps to salute governor who became their voice

Jind: The khap panchayats of Haryana have announced that they would be holding a ceremony in the memory of former governor Satyapal Malik at Khatkar toll plaza on Sunday — the venue being a symbolic reference to the deceased BJP leader's support to farmers during the 2020-21 protests. Harikesh Kaabarchaa, the head of Khatkar Khap, said farm organisations and members of at least another three khap panchayats — Kandela, Dharan, Chahal — would participated in the event at Jind, which is being organised as no state honour was extended to Malik on his cremation. "Khatkar toll plaza has been chosen as it was the epicentre of the protests in Jind during the 13-month-long stir against the three agri-marketing laws," said Kaabarchaa. Kaabarchaa added it was at the same toll plaza where Malik had supported the wrestlers' protest against Brij Bhushan Singh. "At the same plaza, when he was a serving governor, Malik had shared his personal experiences and strongly criticised BJP govt over Pulwama and other issues. His connection with farmers and khaps began strengthening after that gesture of support," added Kaabarchaa. In 2023, a day after being summoned by the CBI in a corruption case, Malik, who served as governor of four states, went to surrender at Delhi's RK Puram police station. "At the time, khap leaders and farm groups' representatives from western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan visited his Delhi residence and accompanied him to the police station," said Kaabarchaa. He added they had also honoured Malik at Kandaela village of Jind district in 2022, after the agri-marketing laws were repealed in Dec 2021. "It is heartbreaking that a man who was always saluted during his tenure in office was denied his final salute by the govt," Kaabarchaa added. "This is why we are going to pay our tributes to him like this. This is our salute to the man who became the voice of farmers, soldiers, and wrestlers. Siddaramaiah lays foundation for new Congress office in Mysuru

Mysuru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a new Congress office in Mysuru. The CM laid the foundation stone for the new Congress office, officially named Indira Congress Bhavana, at the site of the party's existing office premises. He appealed to party workers to contribute towards the construction of the new office. "Even a contribution of Rs 500 can make a difference," he said, urging everyone to donate according to their capacity. He also asked them to ensure the construction of the building is completed within a year. During the event, party workers attempted to celebrate the CM's birthday by organising a cake-cutting, but he declined, stating, " I have never cut a cake and I won't do it now." He did, however, accept a felicitation from the workers at their request. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar later joined in the felicitation. Shortly after the foundation stone was laid, the CM left for Varuna. Shivakumar, in his address, described the upcoming building as "a temple for Congress workers and a guardian of democracy." Rajasthan BJP spokesperson expelled over controversial remarks

The Rajasthan unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has expelled its spokesperson Krishan Kumar Janu for six years after he questioned the party's stand on former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik and former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Mr. Janu's controversial remarks reportedly caused an unease within the party ranks. However, the BJP cited Mr. Janu's comments made in June this year opposing the appointment of Harshini Kulhari as its Jhunjhunu district president as the reason for his expulsion. BJP State disciplinary committee chairperson Onkar Singh Lakhawat said Mr. Janu had failed to justify his actions in response to a show-cause notice issued on June 20. Breach of discipline: BJP In a communique issued on Friday (August 8, 2025), Mr. Lakhawat said the charge of 'breach of discipline' against Mr. Janu had been proved after his failure to submit a satisfactory explanation. Mr. Janu's expulsion from the BJP's primary membership came shortly after his purported video statement criticising senior BJP leaders was circulated on social media platforms. Mr. Janu condemned the 'humiliating treatment' of Mr. Malik and Mr. Dhankhar, both of whom are Jats, by the BJP's top leadership and said he was deeply hurt on witnessing the 'disdain' shown towards them. He made a reference to not conducting the last rites of Mr. Malik, who died last week, with State honours, and not giving a farewell to Mr. Dhankhar, who had resigned. The former BJP spokesperson said he wished to pose questions to Jats working in the party, be they the MPs, MLAs or other office bearers, as to how they could be sure that similar treatment would not be meted out to them. 'What the BJP is doing with mass leaders is very sad. Though the party is going in the wrong direction through all this, the people are quiet,' Mr. Janu said in the video. 'Leaders now puppets' Mr. Janu said the party's senior leadership was responsible for pushing veteran leaders like L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Yashwant Sinha, Praveen Togadia, Sanjay Joshi, Vasundhara Raje, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan to the sidelines. 'Leaders who were strong at the grassroots have been turned into puppets,' he said. 'One who compromises with his principles out of fear is not a Jat,' Mr. Janu said, urging the Jat leaders within the BJP to speak out against the wrongs. While the BJP's disciplinary committee considered the matter seriously and viewed Mr. Janu's remarks as damaging to the party's image, the expelled leader reacted sharply and said he would continue to oppose 'whatever is wrong in the party'. 'I congratulate the people who are happy over my expulsion... I will remain steadfast on my path of ideology,' Mr. Janu said.
