Berlin Bathers Demand Lifting Of Swimming Ban In Spree River

Hundreds of Berliners gathered to take a dip in the Spree river Tuesday to protest a 100-year-old ban on swimming in the city's main waterway. Billed by organisers as a "swim demonstration", the gathering saw swimmers cool off from the summer heat with colourful bathing costumes and even the odd inflatable raft against the backdrop of Berlin's famous cathedral and TV tower. While Berlin's outer districts boast plentiful opportunities for wild swimming, mostly in the city's lakes, doing so in the Spree has been banned since 1925. The ban was lifted briefly on Tuesday for the demonstration, but activists want a stretch of the river called the Spree canal to be permanently open to the public. The same spot was popular with bathers in the early twentieth century before city authorities decided pollution from the expanding metropolis had made the water too dirty. While industrial pollution is no longer a problem, sewage is still periodically discharged into the river when rainfall overwhelms the city's drainage system. Proponents of swimming in the Spree say that technology already exists that would permit water quality to be monitored to ensure it is safe for swimming. Alisan Yasar, a 28-year-old lawyer, told AFP after emerging from the Spree that the swim was "wonderful" but admitted that "you do have to fight against certain preconceptions -- as a Berliner you have it in your head that you just don't go into the Spree". Dilara, a 30-year-old marketing professional, was also pleasantly surprised at what was her first time in the river, despite living close by and jogging past it "hundreds of times". "I went in slowly and kept my head above water but then went all the way in," she said, adding: "I didn't want to come out!" The idea of reopening a section of the Spree has won the backing of some members of Berlin's city assembly but as with many infrastructure projects in the German capital, the idea has been beset by delays and disagreements over the necessary infrastructure. Some have also objected to the cost that opening the river to bathers would entail, saying it's a luxury that cash-strapped Berlin can ill afford. Katrin Androschin, one of the organisers of the demonstration, insisted it is "not a luxury to make a waterway that's already on hand open to the public". She pointed out that a central location for river swimming would help avoid "people becoming sick because they have problems with the heat due to climate change". Perhaps the most famous recent example of a city-centre river being re-opened for bathers is the Seine in Paris. Its waters were cleaned for the Paris 2024 Olympics and last month three swimming zones across the city were opened to the public for the first time since 1923. Stretches of the Isar river in Munich have also been made safe for bathing after UV disinfection measures were introduced in the city's wastewater treatment plants. Swimmers cheer as they gather for a swimming demonstration for the abolition of the general swimming ban in the inner-city Spree river in the Spree in central Berlin on August 12, 2025. Chappell Roan's wig for The Subway video was 'wearable sculpture'

Chappell Roan's huge wig in The Subway video was a piece of "wearable sculpture" inspired by a look previously seen on Julia Fox. In her latest promo, the singer is seen wearing a long, curly wig made from 35 bundles of real human hair and now her hair stylist John Novotny has revealed the idea came about after he created a similar look for actress/model Julia Novotny told WWD: "I had recently made a wig on my client, Julia Fox, to go with an amazing Dilara Findikoglu dress that looked like the Birth of Venus. "The Dilara gown was sheer lace and had tracks of hair sewn into it to look like the hair was draping down Julia's body, and we made a matching black wig that we tucked into the dress to make the hair appear thigh-length. That look and [the request from Chappell Roan's stylist for the video] really got me inspired." In the video, the singer is seen riding the subway wearing an outfit made entirely out of hair. Novotny went on to compare the look he created for Chappell to a "woolly mammoth" and insisted it was "wearable sculpture". He added: "I wanted to create something that pushed the boundary of what hair can be. "The idea of a full silhouette made entirely from hair felt both surreal and intimate. It's a wearable sculpture, yet deeply tied to her beauty and iconic, fiery red hair that pushes boundaries beyond just length." It comes after Chappell recently declared her fashion sense is "like a Halloween" costume. The 27-year-old pop star admitted she is not really a fan of the spooky October holiday but she can definitely see the correlation when it comes to her signature looks. She told W Magazine: "I am not a Halloween girl. My favorite Halloween costumes I admire from afar, because I'm always the b**** who has the cat ears on and that's it. "My work outfit is like Halloween! But when I was a child, I was a red M+M for three years in a row." The Good Luck, Babe! hitmaker admitted she has seen "so many" of her fans dress up as her over the course of the last six months and is thrilled that her audience is now expanding to include children as well as adults. She added: " I've seen so many baby Chappell Roans. There's so many different outfits to choose from! That is something new in the past six months - the audience is growing to include children, and it's so cute. Hot to Go! taught them how to spell and dance."

A neighbour threatened dad with a knife - why won't the housing association act?

Over the past year, Dilara's next-door neighbour has threatened her father with a knife and damaged their says she also smashed her sister's car windscreen with a hammer."I'm just scared," says the 17-year-old beauty therapy student, who lives with her family in south London, "it doesn't feel like a home to me anymore".She says she struggled when doing her GCSEs last year as noise from the neighbour kept her awake - and the issue is still affecting her college studies."I'm really tired," she says, adding that sometimes she can't make it to school because she's so people have contacted Your Voice, Your BBC News telling us how they have dealt with relentless noise, vandalism, death threats and even physical assaults by neighbours. It comes after we reported on a couple plagued by anti-social behaviour earlier this the housing ombudsman told us complaints about such issues had doubled over the last five years and authorities needed to work more collaboratively to protect people. Knife-threat neighbour still living next door Dilara's father Ecevit, 50, says when he told their neighbour to turn the music down at 04:00 one morning in January, she came out with a incident left him "shaking". The neighbour was arrested but released on bail and was back home the next neighbour pleaded guilty to threatening "a person with a blade/sharply pointed article in a public place" and will be sentenced in July. But the anti-social behaviour has month, she allegedly smashed the car windscreen of one of Ecevit's other daughters. The neighbour has now been charged. Melissa, 25, who needs the car to get to work, says she was in "shock" when she discovered what had family believe their housing association, Wandle, has failed to act over the numerous cases of anti-social behaviour, despite much of it being recorded on cameras."What is it going to take for them to actually take action and do something to safeguard us and to protect us? Do they expect her to kill us? How is it not enough?" Melissa says the windscreen incident has "really affected" her and that, along with other members of her family, she now suffers with 29, the eldest daughter in the family says: "There's no real action. There's no real urgency, it's just brushed under the carpet." Anne Waterhouse, chief executive of Wandle, said the housing association was "deeply sorry about the distress caused to the resident enduring this unacceptable level of anti-social behaviour"."Our community safety team has been working with the impacted family, the police, the local authority and several external agencies to resolve the serious anti-social behaviour issues being experienced."Ms Waterhouse added that Wandle was currently assessing whether the family's property would "benefit from enhanced security during this difficult time".But the family say their neighbour has also been failed by the system."It's also a failure for someone who is clearly very vulnerable and is struggling with their mental health. And you know she deserves all the help that she needs, as well as considering my family's safety," Cihan says.A Met Police spokesperson said the local Safer Neighbourhoods Team was aware of a "pattern of behaviour" and was working to support the family, as well as liaising with housing associations and mental health services. Exclusive data from the housing ombudsman shows the number of complaints about how social landlords have dealt with anti-social behaviour in England have increased by 119% over four years - from 552 in 2020, to 1,207 in watchdog found many social landlords were failing to protect tenants from anti-social Blakeway, the housing ombudsman for England, says in about "two out of three cases" he looks at involving anti-social behaviour "something has gone wrong"."In some of the most serious cases, really losing sight of the issues, losing sight of the victim, and the impact of that is deeply shocking," he says. 'I don't sleep' Others contacted us with similar stories - including Cheryl, in Shoreham-by-Sea, who says four years of complaints about her neighbour have resulted in little action from the says loud music, shouting, abuse and other forms of disquiet have made her life a misery."I don't sleep. It's like sharing a house with these people, and it affects every part of everything. I can't go out," she adds. "My routine revolves around them, so I sneak in and out when it's quiet, because it's been dangerous if I don't."Cheryl says she installed cameras around her house because she feels neighbour of Cheryl says anti-social behaviour is impacting her life both say they have been let down by the woman's landlord, Adur & Worthing Councils. Cheryl says she has been told not to contact them anymore, with the council calling her claims "vexatious".The council tells us recent complaints from Cheryl are "unfounded" and "hundreds of hours of officer time have been put into understanding the situation and providing support where it is required". This has led to an "improved situation", it a statement, the council cited "two independent ASB [anti-social behaviour] Case Reviews led by two other councils, both of which have supported the actions we have taken in this case."The BBC has seen video footage showing multiple instances of shouting, swearing and drinking outside Cheryl's flat, which is above the woman' put all of Cheryl's allegations to her neighbour, who did not want to be interviewed but disputed Cheryl's claims and said she felt harassed because she was being filmed. She also told us she was vulnerable. Sussex Police said it had received "multiple reports of anti-social behaviour between neighbours" since 2021. It said a 61-year-old woman had been issued with a Community Protection Notice, and in August 2024 was ordered to complete a community resolution for a public order a statement, the force told us it "understands the impacts of anti-social behaviour on victims and all reports are taken seriously". It said it had "engaged with all parties involved, including the local authority, to identify a satisfactory resolution".Cheryl says the impact of living in this situation has been devastating and she has spent time in hospital after a suicide attempt."It's heartbreaking. It doesn't feel safe, life is hell. It's horrible. It's not a way to live." Many people who contacted us said they felt ignored by the authorities and isolated as no official body has taken ownership of the Henderson, chief executive of the National Housing Federation, which represents housing associations, said persistent anti-social behaviour caused "deep distress" but stressed housing associations treated it seriously."Many have dedicated, specialist teams whose role it is to manage such cases, to liaise with victims and alleged perpetrators, and to mediate swift resolutions."Mr Blakeway, the housing ombudsman, said there were laws in place to protect people but there could be a "breakdown" in "cooperation between different agencies".In many of the cases we have heard about, we were told that people on both sides aren't getting the support they need."Social landlords need more support from mental health services, who will be under their own pressures," Mr Blakeway said. "But then social landlords themselves also need to recognise that they need to develop skills to handle mental health issues effectively themselves." Kylie Jenner awkwardly compared to controversial superstar in new shoot

Kylie Jenner was awkwardly compared to a controversial late superstar in her latest round of Instagram snaps this week. The reality star, 27, slipped into a military-inspired ensemble to plug her brand Khy's latest collaboration with Dilara but fans quickly likened Jenner's gothic appearance to Michael Jackson 's iconic Bad era look in wild comments. One fan quoted the King of Pop's hit Smooth Criminal, writing: 'Annie are you okay.' Others wrote: 'I thought this was Michael Jackson', 'Michael Jackson vibes.' 'Michael Jackson circa 1987. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Thought u was MJ. 'Michael Jackson must be jealous!' Other followers praised Jenner for looking 'hot' and flooded her comment section with heart emojis. The King of Pop died in 2009 at the age of 50 of a cardiac arrest he suffered after having Propofol administered as a sleep aid. Jackson's superstar career and legacy became clouded by rumors of pedophilia beginning in 1993, when he was accused of sexually abusing 13-year-old Jordan Chandler in a lawsuit filed by the boy's father . A criminal investigation found no physical evidence of abuse, but Jackson ultimately settled the civil suit with the family in January 1994 for $23million. He later faced further allegations, as well as a high-profile, sensational criminal trial on child molestation charges involving 13-year-old Gavin Arvizo in 2005. James Safechuck and Wade Robson were defense witnesses in the case, which saw Jackson acquitted of all charges. But his legacy has fallen under renewed scrutiny in recent years over the ongoing molestation claims, which were reignited by Safechuck and Robson in the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland . The reality star, 27, slipped into a military-inspired ensemble to plug her brand Khy's latest collaboration with Dilara but fans quickly likened Jenner's gothic appearance to Michael Jackson in wild comments - Jackson pictured R in 1990 Jenner has recently been wowing in an array of bikinis on a tropical break with her loved ones. Notably Kylie's boyfriend Timothee Chalamet, 29, seems to be absent from her latest family getaway as he was pictured sat courtside in New York yesterday beside Ben Stiller. However, the pair were spotted together at the New York Knicks game last week - Timothee's favourite basketball team. The couple looked totally loved up in pictures of them at the game, with the model seeming smitten as she gazed up at her movie star partner. Kylie and Timothee have mainly kept their romance low profile by only attending a few public events together. However, Kylie and Timothee have been stepping into the spotlight more often in recent months - such as stopping by the 2025 Coachella Music Festival in April and other NBA matches since April. Earlier this month, they also had an 'all-night PDA session' as they spent time in Miami together amid the Grand Prix. At the time when Jenner and Chalamet were spotted at Coachella, a source told People that the two stars are 'very serious.' The insider stated, 'With the awards season and premieres, earlier this year was intense for their relationship.'
