Live location of traffic inspectors to be monitored to ease monsoon mess in Delhi

New Delhi: The monsoon is adding to the usual challenges that Delhi commuters face almost on a regular basis—broken-down buses, non-functional traffic signals or absence of traffic cops. To reduce the mess, Delhi Traffic Police 's Zone II is taking steps to strengthen its coordination mechanism by tracking the live locations of all traffic inspectors (TIs). With vehicle speeds dropping due to slippery roads and visibility concerns during the rain, even minor glitches can trigger major snarls. Traffic Police Zone II will now enhance real-time field monitoring by tracking the TIs. The goal is simple but crucial—ensure quicker signal repair and immediate response to vehicle breakdowns. The zone covers areas under New Delhi, southern and western ranges. "There are 28 traffic circles under Zone II, each headed by an inspector-rank officer," said additional CP (traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta. "While we already monitor peak-hour traffic with the help of DCPs and ACPs, we will now push for tighter, more accountable field coordination. TIs will now be required to share their live locations periodically and that will be checked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo The mechanism existed earlier, too, but we are strengthening it further. " You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Breakdowns and faulty signals may seem like routine complaints, but the data tells its own story. On average, Zone II receives at least two complaints daily about vehicle breakdowns and two more about signal faults. Gupta said minor signal issues were typically resolved within 12 hours while major faults were addressed in three days. All complaints are personally inspected by the traffic inspector concerned to ensure timely redressal. "The aim is to minimise commuter inconvenience. In monsoon months, these quick turnarounds become even more critical," Gupta added. With more rain ahead, better coordination could be the difference between a frustrating jam and a smooth ride.

Traffic plans for Kanwar Yatra too Talking about the Kanwar Yatra, a major annual Hindu religious event that brings lakhs of devotees to the roads, Gupta added that police are ready with their plan. 'We have made preparations from July 12 to July 22. We have marked the routes for the Kanwar Yatra and arranged barricades so that Kanwariyas do not move on the main roads,' he said. Muharram procession: Detailed arrangements have been made for traffic, says police

New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): Ahead of the upcoming Muharram procession, the Delhi Police has made detailed traffic arrangements across the national capital to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety, a senior officer said. Muharram will be observed in the capital on June 6, he said. Speaking to ANI, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said, ' As Muharram is on June 6 in Delhi, we have set up detailed arrangements for traffic. It will be our job to provide diversions to the traffic, and the public should feel minimal inconvenience. When the procession is underway, we will provide some diversion for it. Detailed arrangements have been issued, and we will remain in the fields to closely monitor the Muharram procession...' Regarding the Kanwar Yatra, a major annual religious event that draws lakhs of devotees, Gupta said preparations are well underway. 'We have made preparations for this from 12 July to 22 July. We have identified all the routes of the Kanwar Yatra and have tried to barricade the route so the Kanwar yatris do not come on the main route,' he said. Delhi gears up for monsoon: Traffic police to help man 71 key waterlogging hotspots

Deploying two personnel each to patrol 71 key waterlogging-prone areas, ensuring coordination with other departments — the Delhi Traffic Police is gearing up for the Southwest monsoon, which is expected to hit the Capital within the next two days, said senior officials. These 71 locations are among over 350 across Delhi that have been identified by the Public Works Department (PWD) as critical zones. Officials said these high-priority areas lie along major traffic corridors and remain vulnerable despite cleaning. They include: – 13 locations along Ring Road – 3 along Mall Road – 11 on the Rohtak Road stretch – 9 along Outer Ring Road – Other commonly affected zones such as Burari Road, Najafgarh Road, and the road under Tilak Bridge. Special CP (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhary said, 'Usually, the Traffic Police is not directly involved with waterlogging issues. But we would be coordinating with other agencies and offering our services this monsoon for a better commute in the Capital.' The decision was taken during an inter-department coordination meeting held on Friday in the presence of officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Metro, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), and the Delhi Police. Commenting on the development, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said, 'The objective will be to first divert traffic from these points to avoid congestion. If a drain is overflowing at a certain point, alternate routes will be prepared in advance wherever possible. Traffic officials of the respective circle areas would be deployed to manually direct the traffic on these routes.' If flooding increases, traffic officials are also instructed to call upon other departments, including the PWD, and seek immediate installation of pumps to drain the water. The meeting also focused on the multiplicity of agencies at play in managing the waterlogging points. For instance, between the Sir Vishweshwaraiah Moti Bagh Metro Station and the Durgabai Deshmukh Metro Station, waterlogging after heavy rains could be expected due to work on a sewer line connection being undertaken by DUSIB. Similarly, under the Delhi Cantonment Metro station, the sewer line linking to stormwater drainage can be a trigger for flooding. 'In such areas, the Traffic Police will coordinate with the Delhi Metro and PWD to find common solutions during the monsoon season,' Additional CP Gupta said.

Survey to identify causes of jams at 2 S Delhi roads

New Delhi: To ease traffic snarls at two of south Delhi's busiest corridors—the Chirag Dilli intersection and RTR Marg—Delhi Traffic Police, in collaboration with Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), has launched a detailed traffic engineering survey to identify the root causes of congestion and recommend long-term solutions. While the survey on the Chirag Dilli intersection is already complete, its findings will be formally presented on June 23. The report for RTR Marg, which connects the airport corridor with the AIIMS stretch, is expected to be ready by mid-July. "Traffic engineering plays a key role in managing road infrastructure. When we conduct surveys, we try to identify the root causes of congestion. In many cases, it's not just about traffic volume but also about traffic engineering—like sudden lane expansions or contractions, missing or unclear signage, and much more. For instance, a sudden stop of one vehicle at a particular point causes a ripple effect across the entire stretch," explained IRTE director Rohit Baluja. "These aren't problems that can be solved by policing alone. They need proper traffic engineering solutions," he asserted. According to sources, some problems found at the Chirag Dilli intersection included a lack of information signs, inappropriate geometry with reference to the volume of traffic, and the need for better signal operation management. "We've initiated a detailed traffic survey of the Chirag Dilli and RTR stretches around Munirka and near Gurgaon, in collaboration with IRTE to identify engineering-led solutions. The Chirag Dilli's inspection is complete, and we expect inputs on RTR by mid-July. Based on the findings, we will involve civic agencies and draw up a coordinated plan to ease snarls on these two high-pressure corridors," said additional CP (traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta.
