Fatehpur incident: AAP seeks probe by ex-HC judge

Lucknow: The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded that the Fatehpur incident be investigated by an inquiry committee under a former high court judge. Calling for strict action against those guilty and also officials who allowed this to take place, AAP accused BJP of spreading fanaticism and religious hatred. AAP's Imran Latif described the incident as an example of UP's deteriorating law and order. "BJP's Fatehpur district president announced on Aug 11 that Hindu organisations would perform rituals at the tomb, but administration and police did not intervene. For over half an hour, chaos prevailed at the site in presence of police force, and officials remained silent spectators. It shows the incident occurred under govt protection," he said. tnn AAP's outgoing state general secretary Dinesh Patel said that BJP has used such tactics to divert attention from serious issues like SIR, school closures, and mergers by spreading religious frenzy from time to time. He claimed that the local intelligence units had prior information about the incident, yet the administration did not prevent it. Jeera, isabgol trade ifeels the heat as US imposes 25% tariff

Ahmedabad: India's spice exporters are feeling the heat after the United States imposed a 25% tariff on cumin (jeera) imports from India. The move, exporters warn, could dent the country's spice trade. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders (FISS), the tariff imposition could impact cumin trade by at least 15% in volumes, despite India being the key sourcing market for both these spices. U Karthick, vice-president of FISS, said, "The US is the biggest spice buyer from India after China, particularly for cumin seeds. Gujarat is currently the sole sourcing market given the reduced crop yield in countries like Syria, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan and Egypt, which is a result of geopolitical conflicts. Despite this, the sudden increase in duties will be difficult for traders and is likely to impact demand in the longer term. " The blow is even more severe for psyllium husk (isabgol), a commodity widely exported to the US. "So far, a 10% duty was imposed on psyllium husk, which has now been raised to 25%. This crop is widely used in pharma and bakery-related applications and, therefore, the product will get expensive, which may impact consumption," explained Dinesh Patel, ex-chairman of the agriculture produce market committee (APMC) Unjha. The Unjha market yard is among the largest spice trading hubs in the country, and a bulk of both domestic and global trade of cumin seeds, coriander, fennel seeds, and psyllium husk takes place from here. Rakesh Patel, secretary of the Isabgul Processors Association, said, "If duty is imposed, the cost will have to be borne by the US residents as India is the biggest supplier. There will be some initial setbacks in the trade, but things will settle in the next couple of months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " FISS estimates suggest that India's cumin production for the current season is pegged at 5.38 lakh MT, slightly down from last year's 6.05 lakh MT, due to erratic weather conditions resulting in a 5% crop reduction. However, when combined with 0.8 to 1.1 lakh MT of stock carried over from the previous season, the effective availability remains robustly at over 6 lakh MT. "Though these countries still depend on India for supply, such high tariffs from major markets like the US will hurt procurement cycles and business planning," Karthick explained. Prices of jeera have recently declined due to the subdued export sentiment to China. In 2025, the total estimated production of psyllium husk across India stands at 2.36 lakh MT. Around 20% of this is consumed locally, while the rest is exported, with the US accounting for 50% of the exports. The export value of isabgol alone is pegged at Rs 3,500 crore, while the combined domestic and international market turnover is hovering around Rs 5,000 crore. Spice exporters and traders, who mostly ship whole spices to the US and China, are now facing pressure from importers to absorb the cost of duties, according to FISS sources. "This has become increasingly unsustainable, especially as importers value-add these whole spices into powders, blends, nutraceutical ingredients, and other consumer-ready products, which are then exported globally," said Karthick. The challenge is two-fold: mitigating the near-term impact of the US tariffs and preparing for a more resilient, diversified future. Exporters are calling for urgent policy support, deeper market access agreements, and incentives for value-added exports.

Robbers loot drone cameras, held in Pratapgarh

Prayagraj: Neighbouring Pratapgarh cops on Monday claimed to have busted an inter-district gang of robbers targeting marriage ceremony photographers using drone cameras and arrested two of its key members near Umarpur turn while they were planning to sell the looted drone cameras. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The police also seized two looted drone cameras, a charger, a remote, batteries, a bike, and one country-made pistol of Rs 315 bore along with two cartridges from their possession. The arrested robbers, identified as Raju Patel (23) and Dinesh Patel (27), are residents of Rampur Bela (Patti). The arrested robbers confessed to the police that there are a total of six members in their gang who used to target marriage photographers using drone cameras for shooting. The gang executed around half a dozen drone camera thefts in Pratapgarh and adjoining districts. Raju admitted to the police that his gang executed drone camera thefts at Kandhai and other areas on May 10, 23, and 26 at three different spots. The robbers also confessed that they used to target photographers using drone cameras once they returned from covering marriage ceremony events. As drone cameras and their accessories are quite expensive in the market, the gang's modus operandi was to target photographers. They used to connect with marriage parties and gather details of photographers assigned the task of coverage. Police said that three criminal cases each were pending against the arrested robbers. They were booked under section 310(2) and 317(2) of BNS and section 3/25 of the Arms Act. Teams are dispatched to ensure the arrest of other members of the gang.
