Fatehpur incident: AAP seeks probe by ex-HC judge

Time of Indiaa day ago
Lucknow: The
Aam Aadmi Party
has demanded that the Fatehpur incident be investigated by an inquiry committee under a former high court judge. Calling for strict action against those guilty and also officials who allowed this to take place, AAP accused BJP of spreading fanaticism and religious hatred.
AAP's Imran Latif described the incident as an example of UP's deteriorating law and order.
"BJP's Fatehpur district president announced on Aug 11 that Hindu organisations would perform rituals at the tomb, but administration and police did not intervene. For over half an hour, chaos prevailed at the site in presence of police force, and officials remained silent spectators. It shows the incident occurred under govt protection," he said. tnn
AAP's outgoing state general secretary Dinesh Patel said that BJP has used such tactics to divert attention from serious issues like SIR, school closures, and mergers by spreading religious frenzy from time to time. He claimed that the local intelligence units had prior information about the incident, yet the administration did not prevent it.

Another arrest made for 'attack' on policemen during Nabanna Avijan

Kolkata: Another person was arrested in connection with the alleged attack on policemen during Nabanna Avijan in Kolkata, police said on Thursday. The arrest was made on Wednesday night. The person has been identified as Manas Chandra Saha, who hails from Naihati in the North 24 Parganas district. According to police sources, evidence has been found that the accused is directly involved in the incident of throwing a police constable on the road and beating him on August 9. On Tuesday, the Kolkata Police made the first arrest in this case. A 40-year-old man named Chandan Gupta was arrested in this case. His house is also in the North 24 Parganas district. Chandan, a resident of Jagaddal, was arrested at the junction of BB Ganguly Street and Bentinck Street in Kolkata. There are multiple charges against the arrested person, including attempt to murder, obstructing a government servant from doing his duty, and intentionally causing injury. Chandan was produced in the Bankshall court on Wednesday, where the judge sent him to police custody till August 15. However, Manas' political identity is not yet known. "He will be produced in a court today. We will investigate further into the case after taking him into our custody," said a senior police officer. The first anniversary of the ghastly rape and murder of a woman junior doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 was marred by massive violence following a scuffle between cops and protesters participating in the Nabanna Avijan. The victim's mother alleged that she was beaten up by the policemen after she, along with her husband and other protesters, tried to march towards Nabanna. The victim's mother and the BJP leaders alleged that in the police action, the sacred conch shell-bangle on her wrist, traditionally believed to be the symbolic representation of married Hindu women, was broken. Meanwhile, five policemen were injured in the scuffle with protesters. A case was registered at the New Market police station in connection with the "attack" on policemen.

Bihar SIR Hearing: As Petitioners Give Evidence of Omissions, SC Says ECI Expanding Number of Documents

New Delhi: While hearing the challenge to the Election Commission of India's (ECI's) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, the Supreme Court on Wednesday (August 13) asked the petitioners whether the ECI does not have the residual power to conduct such an exercise in a manner it deemed fit. The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi did not appear to be moved by the evidence of omissions and chose to describe the process as 'in fact, voter-friendly and not voter-exclusionary' given that the poll body is accepting 11 documents as proof of identity as opposed to seven during past revision exercises. 'They are expanding the number of documents of identity … it gives you more options,' Justice Joymalya Bagchi said, reported Indian Express. To petitioners challenging the EC's power to hold such an intensive revision, the other judge on that bench, Justice Surya Kant, drew attention to Section 21(3) of the Representation of the People Act, which says that the commission 'may … direct a special revision of the electoral roll for any constituency or part of a constituency in such manner as it may think fit'. When lawyer Gopal Sankaranarayanan said that the current exercise wasn't taking place just in one constituency but an entire state, Justice Bagchi asked why the SIR could not be seen as a special revision occurring in each of Bihar's seats simultaneously, reported LiveLaw. Sankaranarayanan also said that adult Indian citizens have the right to be enrolled as voters under Article 326, but Justice Bagchi said the EC would in turn say it has the power under Article 324 to conduct elections and prepare voter rolls. 'It is a battle between a constitutional right and a constitutional power,' he said. The bench will likely resume hearing the matter tomorrow. Advocate Prashant Bhushan questioned why the ECI removed the searchable version of the draft roll from its website, adding that the ECI did it on the very next day of Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi's press conference, alleging voter list manipulations. Bhushan demanded that the ECI should publish the list of the 65 lakh voters who have been omitted from the list along with the reasons for the omission. "They say they have exact reasons for deletion - why should they not be on the website? This shows mala fide intent," said Bhushan. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the 11 documents which have been specified by the ECI as acceptable for the SIR have very little coverage among the population in Bihar. He questioned the exclusion of Aadhaar, EPIC, ration card, water and gas connection bills etc. from the list, said the LiveLaw report. The hearing will continue on Thursday (August 14).

Constitution Club: A place for lawmakers, ex-MPs to rewind, rejuvenate

New Delhi: BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy won the keenly fought election to a key post at the Constitution Club of India, which has over the decades emerged as a meeting place for current and former members of Parliament. Barely a few hundred metres from Parliament, the Constitution Club of India (CCI) has served as a place for MPs to rejuvenate after a hard day's work at the gymnasium or with a few quick laps in the swimming pool. The history of the CCI is as old as that of independent India. It was established in 1947 as a place for members of the Constituent Assembly, tasked with drafting the Constitution, who had living quarters at the Constitution House on what was then called the Curzon Road. The original Constitution House is now home to the Civil Services Officers Institute on Kasturba Gandhi Road. In the days just after independence, the members of the Constituent Assembly stayed at the Constitution House and entertained their guests in the sprawling dining halls. Post-meal discussions and gossip spilled over to the green lawns of the complex. The present-day CCI was inaugurated in 1965 by the then president Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and is registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The Lok Sabha speaker is the ex-officio president of the CCI, the deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha is the general secretary and the Union urban affairs minister is the vice president. The three secretaries in-charge of administration, sports, and culture, and the treasurer oversee the functioning of the CCI along with an 11-member Executive Committee. The CCI has two restaurants -- Article 21 for the general public and The Preamble for members of the Club. It also has a coffee house, health centre, spa, unisex salon, billiards room, a badminton court, leisure lounges and conference facilities on its premises. Over the years, the CCI has emerged as a popular venue for political meetings, art and craft exhibitions, functions, conferences and meetings. Rajiv Pratap Rudy maintained his 25-year-old dominance in the club management, retaining his position as secretary (administration) and prevailing over the challenge from fellow BJP leader Sanjeev Balyan. The election saw participation from marquee members, including BJP's Amit Shah and Congress' Sonia Gandhi. Earlier, Congress MP Rajiv Shukla was declared elected as secretary (sports) after BJP Rajya Sabha member Pradip Kumar Varma withdrew his candidature.
