Royal Caribbean crew member stabs coworker before jumping overboard: police
A Royal Caribbean crew member jumped overboard to his death last week on the Icon of the Seas ship after allegedly stabbing a colleague, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. The incident occurred on July 24 shortly after 7:30 p.m. while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas. According to police, a 28-year-old female crew member from South Africa was stabbed multiple times by a 35-year-old male crew member, also from South Africa. Following the incident, the suspect reportedly fled the scene and jumped into the water from the massive ship, where he was retrieved unresponsive by rescue team members and pronounced dead by onboard medical staff, police said. 'The female victim sustained stab wounds to her upper body and was treated and is in stable condition,' they said. Royal Caribbean did not identify the crew members involved in the incident. Story continues below advertisement 'Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away,' Royal Caribbean said in a statement to CBS News. 'We extend our condolences to the crew member's family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share.' Police noted that an autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death of the male crew member as the investigation continues. Passengers on board the Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, shared videos online showing crew members running to help the man who jumped overboard. A voice can be heard saying, 'Oscar, Oscar, Oscar,' which is believed to be code for man overboard. The ship was heading to the Bahamas' CocoCay as part of a seven-night cruise at the time. The incident comes nearly a month after a man jumped off a Disney cruise ship to save his daughter, who fell overboard while the ship was on its way back to South Florida. On June 29, crew members from the Disney Dream rescue team pulled the girl and her father into a small boat as the cruise ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale from the Bahamas on the last day of the voyage, according to Disney and passengers who recorded the rescue on video. A video shared on TikTok showed the man treading water with his daughter in his arms. He handed her over to the rescue team before getting in the boat. In a statement, a Disney spokesperson said, 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.' Story continues below advertisement 'We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols,' the company added. According to a 2020 report from the Cruise Lines International Association, the odds of going overboard are unlikely. From 2009 to 2019, there were 212 people reported overboard, with 48 of those passengers successfully rescued. Year over year, there has been a 'significant decline' in both the number of overboard incidents and the number of fatalities. — With files from The Associated Press

We finally know how a 5-year-old girl fell from a Disney cruise ship
After weeks of speculation, Florida officials have confirmed exactly how a 5-year-old girl fell overboard from the Disney Dream cruise ship last month — and the story is as dramatic as it is heroic. According to a newly released report from the Broward Sheriff's Office, the child had been climbing on a railing on the ship's fourth deck on June 29 when she lost her balance and fell backward through a porthole into the ocean. Her father, who hadn't seen the fall, jumped into the water moments later after her mother sounded the alarm. The case drew intense public interest — and harsh online criticism — after rumors circulated that the father had placed the girl on the railing to take photos. But investigators now say those rumors were entirely false. The child climbed up on her own while her parents were nearby playing shuffleboard, and a strong gust of wind may have contributed to the fall, according to a witness on board. 'The girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, and he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter,' the sheriff's office confirmed, as reported by the Daily Mail. Onlookers described a harrowing scene, with the mother screaming that her daughter was just five years old and couldn't swim. Her father, 37, leapt overboard and treaded water with his daughter for about 20 minutes before they were both rescued by the Disney Dream's onboard team. Cruise officials say the crew responded within minutes and praised the team's quick thinking. 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship,' Disney Cruise Lines said in a statement. The incident occurred while the ship was sailing between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale. The Disney Dream, one of the line's most luxurious vessels, can carry up to 4,000 passengers. The girl and her father were both safely brought back on board, and the captain later addressed the passengers with an update. Solve the daily Crossword

Police reveal how girl fell from Disney cruise ship before being saved by father
Police have revealed how a five-year-old girl who fell from a Disney Cruise ship into the sea was saved by her father. On the morning of June 29, the girl lost her balance while sitting on a railing and fell through a porthole into the ocean from the fourth deck of the ship into the water. Florida police have now clarified the girl's father was unaware of the accident until the mother alerted him. Officers said he then "jumped into the ocean to save his daughter". Footage filmed by passengers showed the moment a small boat rescued the father and daughter. Police added: "After the 37-year-old father found his daughter, he treaded water until they were rescued by a tender that was launched from the ship." Roughly 20 minutes later, they were rescued by an emergency vessel launched by the cruise liner and were taken to see medical staff and the father was later hospitalised. Broward Sheriff's Office said: "The family lives out of state. "For the family's continued privacy, detectives are not releasing their names, where they live, or the details of the father's injury." Police said an investigation into the incident continues, adding: "This family is so blessed. It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome." The incident took place on the last day of the cruise, as the ship was returning from the Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale. Passengers talking to local media after the rescue expressed shock at how quickly the situation escalated. Passengers on board the cruise ship describe what they saw. "The ship was moving quickly, so quickly, it's crazy how quickly the people became tiny dots in the sea, and then you lost sight of them," passenger Laura Amador said. Another said it was clear how tiring the experience was for the father saying: "You could tell that he was really struggling, he'd been treading water for 15-20 minutes." Police released the statement after the speculation online that the father was taking a photo of his daughter against a railing on the fourth deck when she fell into the water. In a statement at the time of the incident, Disney praised the quick work of their crew members in a statement. "The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water," a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson said. "We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes." It is rare for passengers to fall overboard from cruise ships, and data from the Cruise Lines International Association shows the number of incidents is falling. Falling overboard is extremely dangerous, in 2019, 25 incidents were recorded, and only nine of them were rescued.

Her hero dad, 37, managed to keep her afloat for 20 minutes before rescue services arrived at the scene. But the Florida Sheriff's Office has now shared its findings on how exactly the nightmare incident unfolded. Officials say that the girl had been sitting on a railing and fell into the sea when she lost her balance. Her father did not see the incident to start with, and was alerted to the situation when his wife made him aware. "After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter," a Sheriff's Office spokesperson said. Crucially, the report has debunked online speculation that her dad had intentionally placed her on the railing to take photos. The Broward Sheriff's Office said the five-year-old fell "backwards through a porthole" by herself after losing her balance. Witnesses heard the mother screaming and saying "she's five and can't swim". Once alert to the incident, the dad quickly leapt to the rescue and managed to keep his daughter afloat for 20 minutes, according to detectives. Hundreds of passengers watched on as the terrifying events unfolded. Passenger Monica Shannon told the Daily Mail that "the parents were playing shuffleboard and the girl was climbing on the railings. "And as she went to climb up again she flew off." She added that high winds on the day could have contributed to the child falling into the ocean. The ship's captain notified passengers of the incident once the rescue effort was complete. A Disney Cruise Lines spokesperson said: "The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water.
