Noida man attacks two teens, their Pit Bull after dog barks at him; arrested

A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attacking two teenagers and their pet dog, a Pit Bull, with a knife, Noida Police said on Monday. According to police, the accused, Sunil aka Bobby, lives in a JJ Colony in Noida's Sector 8. 'We arrested Sunil near Kohli Dharam Kanta in Sector 8. We also recovered the knife which he had hidden behind a toilet,' said Station House Officer, Noida Phase 1, Amit Kumar Maan. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Noida 1, Swatantra Kumar Singh, said the arrest was made based on a complaint by a woman, Urmila, who also lives in the JJ Colony. According to police, Urmila, in her complaint, told the police that the incident took place around 10.30 pm on Friday. Her two dogs were tied up outside while the family was inside their home. 'Suddenly, I heard my dogs barking… I came out and saw Sunil attacking one of my dogs with a knife. When we asked him to stop, he started hurling abuses at us and attacked my 17-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter,' Urmila alleged in her complaint. A senior police officer said the accused, who was drunk, was walking past the woman's home when the dogs started barking at him. He got angry and attacked the Pit Bull, said the officer. The ACP said an FIR was registered under sections 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (breach of peace), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relevant sections of the Cruelty to Animals Act, and relevant sections of the Arms Act. 'We sent them to the District Hospital for first aid, and later arrested Sunil after initial treatment. He has been sent to judicial custody,' said the ACP.

Man, 2 sons get life term for murder over land dispute

Agra: A court in Etah has sentenced a man and his two sons to life imprisonment for the murder of a neighbour following a dispute over the boundary of their agricultural fields. According to ADGC (Crime) Kusum Tomar, the incident occurred on July 21, 2017, when Shabbir Khan and his sons, Jafruddin Khan and Tillu, attacked Yunus Khan with sticks and rods, striking him on the head. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Yunus's field was adjacent to that of the accused, and a long-standing boundary dispute had escalated into violence. Yunus was initially taken to the District Hospital in Etah in a severely injured condition. He was later referred to SN Medical College, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment on July 31, 2017. Following the attack, a case was registered on the same day at Awagadh Police Station under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation), among others, based on a complaint filed by Yunus Khan's brother, Nanhe Khan. Police arrested Jafruddin Khan on Sept 13, 2017, and a chargesheet was filed in Dec that year. During the trial, the defence argued that the accused came from an impoverished background and had dependents to support. However, Additional district and sessions Judge Sudha (who goes by his first name only) dismissed the plea, stating that financial hardship could not justify a crime. The court found all three accused guilty of murder and imposed a fine of Rs 31,000 on each. In case of non-payment, they will face an additional two months of imprisonment.

CM Siddaramaiah to inaugurate Kidwai Memorial's chemotherapy centre in Mysuru on May 23

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology's Day Care Chemotherapy Centre at the District Hospital in Metagalli in Mysuru on May 23. On the occasion, Mr. Siddaramaiah will also virtually inaugurate 15 other Day Care Chemotherapy units across Karnataka as part of the State government's initiative to make chemotherapy facilities available in districts. The District Hospital in Mysuru district will be starting a chemotherapy unit with 10 beds for males and 10 beds for females. The equipment list has been certified by the experts at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru. Any other necessary equipment required for the functioning of the Day Care Chemotherapy Centre shall be made available by the district surgeon, said a statement here on Wednesday. In view of the increasing burden of cancer in Karnataka, the government has proposed to decentralise cancer care services, especially for chemotherapy administration, by following a hub and spoke model. In Mysuru district, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru, is the hub, and the district hospital in Mysuru is the spoke. This model is aimed at providing relief to the patients, who currently have to travel long distances to the tertiary care centres, adding significant financial and emotional stress. While the hubs are the tertiary cancer care centres that will handle diagnosis, initial assessment, treatment planning, and the first chemotherapy cycle, spokes are Day Care Chemotherapy Centres at district hospitals that will administer follow-up chemotherapy based on treatment regimen decided by the hub. The day care chemotherapy centres will initially focus on palliative chemotherapy and chemotherapy for solid tumours that include oral cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer at this stage. 'Standardised protocols have been developed by experts at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru, for uniform implementation,' the statement added. Karnataka reports approximately 70,000 new cancer cases annually, according to ICMR's National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) 2023 report. While breast cancer accounted for 18 percent of them, cervical cancer accounted for 14 percent, followed by oral cancer at 12 percent and lung cancer at 8 percent, and colorectal cancer at 6 per cent, the report mentioned. While the incidence of oral cancer at 12 cases for every one lakh population is higher than national average, the incidence of breast cancer is put at 35 cases for every one lakh women population. The incidence of cervical cancer is put at 15 cases for every one lakh women population, the statement said. The statement also pointed out that 60 percent of the patients travel more than 100 km for chemotherapy due to centralised services in major cities like Bengaluru, Hubballi and Mysuru and the District Day Care Chemotherapy Centres will not only reduce urban-rural disparity in cancer care and minimise travel and hospitalisation costs for patients, but also prevent treatment abandonment.

Single shell claims two lives, devastates two families in Poonch

POONCH: On May 7, Ranjit Singh, 48, was standing near a shop and talking to his immediate neighbour and namesake, Ranjit Singh, who was on the balcony of the house near the Syndicate area of Poonch. Both of them were discussing the night-long shelling by Pakistani troops in the border areas, including Poonch after 'Operation Sindoor'. Below the balcony, the shop was closed and its shutters were down, and inside the shop, Ranjit's brother, Amrik Singh, was arranging things. At around 7.45 am, a shell fired by Pakistani troops landed in the area, close to both of them and exploded with a big bang injuring the duo, one on the road and another on the balcony. The splinters of the artillery shell also pierced the shutter of the closed shop and hit Amrik, who was present inside. Both Ranjit, who was on the road, and Amrik sustained critical injuries while Ranjit, who was on the balcony, sustained splinter injuries in right arm. 'The explosion caused fear and panic and nobody came out, and everybody was confined to their homes. Despite the blood oozing out from my arm, I and my 8-year-old nephew put both of them in a vehicle and rushed them to the nearby District Hospital, where both were declared brought dead,' said Amrik's brother Ranjit.

District Hospital fails to address critical cases in Kodagu, despite crores of investment

MADIKERI: The health sector in Kodagu, especially the District Hospital in Madikeri, witnessed a makeover during the COVID-19 period. Further, the hospital has been sanctioned Rs 178.1 crore in recent years for the completion of a new, well-equipped hospital building. However, hundreds of patients continue to be referred to hospitals in cities outside Kodagu as the District Hospital faces an acute staff shortage, with over 150 posts lying vacant. Mithya (name changed) recently reported to the District Hospital after her husband developed symptoms of a pancreatic infection. He was shifted to the ICU and treated for two days. However, as the infection worsened and no specialist doctors were available at the hospital, the patient was referred to a better facility in Mysuru. The family ended up spending over Rs 1 lakh for treatment at a private hospital outside the district. Despite the completion of the new hospital building that boasts improved facilities, the District Hospital is still functioning from the old building, which lacks even a lift. Hundreds of patients from within the district and neighbouring areas, including Periyapatna, seek treatment here. While the hospital manages minor ailments, complex health cases are routinely referred to private or other government hospitals outside Kodagu. Despite the government investing crores in improving the facility, decent treatment for the poor remains a distant dream. 'A senior doctor visits the patients once during the morning hour. Post that, it is the students of the medical college who follow up on the patients. When my husband was admitted at the District Hospital, the junior trainee doctors were unable to explain to us what the exact problem was,' said Mithya. When The New Indian Express contacted the management regarding the hospital's failure to handle not-so-complicated cases, Dr Lokesh, the Dean of the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KoIMS), stated, 'If a patient requires surgical and medical treatment, they are being referred to other hospitals as our hospital does not have super specialists. There are many challenges in appointing specialists and due to the absence of a gastroenterologist and nephrologist, severe pancreas cases are being referred to other hospitals.' He further added that there are no experts available to treat critical patients. Patients, meanwhile, are left questioning whether the District Hospital exists only to treat minor ailments such as the common cold, as hundreds of cases are regularly referred to other hospitals despite the crores invested. Vacancies at the hospital While the District Hospital requires 43 Senior Resident (SR) doctors, only three are working, leaving 40 posts vacant. Similarly, of the 47 required Junior Resident (JR) doctors, only three are on duty, leaving 44 positions unfilled. Among the 36 other doctor posts, only 17 are filled. The hospital currently has 151 vacant posts, including those of the Director, Chief Administrative Officer, and District Surgeon.
