Sacramento State hires Mike Bibby as men's basketball coach
Sacramento State has hired former NBA player Mike Bibby as its new men's basketball head coach. Bibby spent seven seasons with the Sacramento Kings from 2001 to 2008, leading the team to multiple deep NBA playoff runs. He won a national championship as a player at Arizona and was the No. 2 pick in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Vancouver Grizzlies. Advertisement He played for the Grizzlies and also the Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Washington Wizards. In 1,001 NBA regular-season games, he averaged 14.7 points and 5.5 assists. 'Since 2001, Sacramento has felt like home to me,' Bibby, 46, said in a statement. 'The people, the fans and the passion they have for the city and their teams is unmatched. I have always felt that passion, and will always be thankful for how I was embraced. Sacramento State is no different. After seeing the campus and meeting with (president Luke) Wood and (athletic director) Mark Orr, their vision for the university and program was something I shared. We are going to build, we are going to develop and we are going to win.' The school also has made claims of millions in NIL dollars becoming available if it were to receive an invitation to the Pac-12. 'I am convinced that Mike will pour every ounce of his energy into Sacramento State and engage the entire Sacramento region,' Orr said in a statement. 'I could not be more excited about the future of our program.' Bibby has spent time as an assistant coach with the Puerto Rican national team, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Grizzlies summer-league teams. At Shadow Mountain High School in Arizona, his alma mater, Bibby led the program to five state championships. He was fired in 2019 following allegations of sexual abuse and harassment made against him by a teacher at the school. Bibby denied the claims, and Phoenix police did not recommend charges against Bibby after not finding probable cause. The Hornets went 7-25 overall this season, finishing last in the Big Sky Conference with a 3-15 record.

RJ Luis Jr., No. 2 St. John's heat up, take down Omaha
RJ Luis Jr. made a career-high five 3-pointers and second-seeded St. John's found its shooting stroke en route to an 83-53 victory over No. 15 seed Omaha in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night in Providence, R.I. St. John's (31-4) earned its first tournament win since 2000. Coach Rick Pitino and the Big East champs will face John Calipari and No. 10 seed Arkansas in the second round Saturday. Luis led all scorers with 22 points and added eight rebounds. He made 5 of 8 attempts from deep as St. John's -- a 30.4 percent 3-point shooting team entering the night -- matched a season high with 14 3-pointers to counter Omaha clogging the lanes. "I didn't know we hit 14 threes," Luis said. "We're not bad shooters, it's just about moving the ball and getting open looks and shots and shooting the ball with confidence. Definitely if we're able to keep shooting the threes, it's going to be pretty interesting going down and we have to pick up our defense and get back to that, which is our identity." Simeon Wilcher scored 13 points for the Red Storm. Kadary Richmond had 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Zuby Ejiofor added 10 points, seven boards, four assists and three blocks. JJ White posted 15 points and five assists to lead Omaha (22-13), which was playing in its first Division I NCAA Tournament after claiming the Summit League championship. Marquel Sutton scored 11 for the Mavericks, and Isaac Ondekane pulled down 10 of his 11 rebounds in the first half. St. John's missed its first five shots and let Omaha stake out a 7-0 lead, prompting an early timeout from Pitino. After Richmond got the Red Storm on the board, Luis scored eight St. John's points in a row, bookended by a pair of 3-pointers. "I thought we got off to a great start, 7-0," Omaha coach Chris Crutchfield said. "Gave our guys some energy and confidence that we could play with a good team like St. John's. As the game wore on, the physicality of that team just wore us down. ... We didn't make any shots tonight, but great effort by our guys. " The Mavericks moved ahead 20-14 before St. John's turned the tables. Wilcher cut the lead in half with a 3-pointer, prompting a 16-2 run that featured triples by Deivon Smith, Ruben Prey and another from Wilcher. Omaha scored six in a row to cut it to 30-28, but Vince Iwuchukwu got inside for a bucket that turned into a three-point play with two seconds left, giving St. John's a 33-28 halftime edge. Luis kept the Red Storm 3-point party going by making one 14 seconds into the second half. Teammate Aaron Scott splashed a trey, then Luis and Wilcher went on a two-on-one that ended in an alley-oop dunk by Luis, giving St. John's firm control at 43-30. Luis knocked down another two triples to hand St. John's its first 20-point lead with 13:14 to go. Critically, the Red Storm had assists on their first eight made field goals of the half while committing zero turnovers. St. John's held the Mavericks to 7-of-34 field-goal shooting (20.6 percent) and outrebounded them 31-19 in the second half. "The one thing about our team all season long, we have never panicked about either being down or being up by a few," Pitino said. "I think that the players were correct. I think they were a little tight. This is all new to them. ... It's first-time experience for them. They will learn from this night, get a lot better but it's been a great season for us." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Natalie McNeal scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds as top-seeded Green Bay beat No. 2 seed Purdue Fort Wayne 76-63 on Tuesday to claim back-to-back Horizon League Tournament championships. No. 4 UConn ends No. 7 South Carolina's 71-game home win streak with 87-58 rout
Guard Azzi Fudd scored 28 points and No. 7 UConn ended No. 4 South Carolina's 71-game home winning streak with an 87-58 victory Sunday. Forward Sarah Strong added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Huskies (24-3), who had lost their past four to the Gamecocks. Paige Bueckers had 12 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds as UConn took control late in the opening quarter and was up by 22 points by halftime. Uncharacteristically, defending champion South Carolina could not respond and lost for the first time at home since North Carolina State beat the Gamecocks 54-46 on Dec. 3, 2020. That ended the fourth-longest home winning streak ever in women's Division I basketball history. Fudd followed up a career-best 34-point performance in a win over St. John's this Wednesday by torching the Gamecocks. She had six of UConn's 13 3-pointers, including four in the third quarter to close off any South Carolina hope of a comeback. Joyce Edwards had 17 points to lead South Carolina (23-3). UConn's win could shake up the women's Division I NCAA Tournament picture as the Huskies were projected as a No. 2 seed, while the Gamecocks were a No. 1 seed in the NCAA basketball selection committee's first reveal Sunday. UConn: It was a big win for the Huskies, who fell to another SEC opponent, Tennessee, 80-76, earlier this month. With a healthy Fudd playing at this level, UConn could be a championship contender. South Carolina: The Gamecocks had lost a total of three games the past three seasons and were sent reeling by No. 3 Texas last Sunday before Sunday. Coach Dawn Staley will need to find answers in a hurry. Key moment UConn trailed 11-9 early on Edwards' basket. Then the Huskies took off on a 22-3 surge in the next 10 minutes to take control and led 45-23 at the half. Key stat South Carolina came in out-rebounding opponents by more than eight boards a game. UConn turned that around, holding a 48-29 advantage on the glass. Up next UConn continues a three-game road trip at Seton Hall on Wednesday night. South Carolina ends a three-game homestand against Arkansas on Thursday night. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
