Sacramento State hires Mike Bibby as men's basketball coach
Bibby spent seven seasons with the Sacramento Kings from 2001 to 2008, leading the team to multiple deep NBA playoff runs. He won a national championship as a player at Arizona and was the No. 2 pick in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Vancouver Grizzlies.

He played for the Grizzlies and also the Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Washington Wizards. In 1,001 NBA regular-season games, he averaged 14.7 points and 5.5 assists.
'Since 2001, Sacramento has felt like home to me,' Bibby, 46, said in a statement. 'The people, the fans and the passion they have for the city and their teams is unmatched. I have always felt that passion, and will always be thankful for how I was embraced. Sacramento State is no different. After seeing the campus and meeting with (president Luke) Wood and (athletic director) Mark Orr, their vision for the university and program was something I shared. We are going to build, we are going to develop and we are going to win.'

It's another high-profile move for Sac State, which also spoke to Michael Vick for its football head coaching job before hiring UNLV offensive coordinator Brennan Marion. The school also has made claims of millions in NIL dollars becoming available if it were to receive an invitation to the Pac-12.
'I am convinced that Mike will pour every ounce of his energy into Sacramento State and engage the entire Sacramento region,' Orr said in a statement. 'I could not be more excited about the future of our program.'
Bibby has spent time as an assistant coach with the Puerto Rican national team, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Grizzlies summer-league teams.
At Shadow Mountain High School in Arizona, his alma mater, Bibby led the program to five state championships. He was fired in 2019 following allegations of sexual abuse and harassment made against him by a teacher at the school. Bibby denied the claims, and Phoenix police did not recommend charges against Bibby after not finding probable cause.

Sacramento State reached the 1962 Division II national championship game but has never reached the Division I NCAA Tournament or the NIT. The Hornets went 7-25 overall this season, finishing last in the Big Sky Conference with a 3-15 record.

'Can you get your identity and your style of play and your team committed to that?' Curry said. 'Last year, we were chasing a little towards the end of the year to try and get out of the play-in. Then from there, we gave it a great run in the playoffs — just didn't work out.' For Curry, his goal is simple: to maintain consistency throughout the season and put themselves in a position to make a playoff run next spring. Last year, after going 25-26 through the first 51 games, Curry wants to avoid another slow start and stay healthy in the process. 'Trying to be in a position where we're somewhere at the top of the Western Conference throughout the vibe and not have to be on the gas pedal all the way down the stretch, and hopefully we're all healthy come April," continued Curry. While the start of the regular season is still months away, Curry believes in the success of his group thanks to a veteran, star-studded core that includes Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. As far as the rest of the roster, it's on the front office to build a rotation that fits around Steph's game. 'The way our organization is run, me, Draymond, Jimmy [Butler] are trying to make sure we're prepared individually and collectively to lead our team to where we're supposed to go," Curry explained. "All that stuff will take care of itself. It's the front office's job to bring the best team back. When September 29th comes around and we're suiting up for practice, we'll be ready.' So that's going to be important for him as he continues to improve his conditioning. But we're really proud of him and he's done a great job so far." Doncic has been going viral this summer as he's in the best shape of his life. This slimmer, sleeker Luka has come a long way from being exiled from the Mavericks, but even St. Jean says that the work has only just begun. "I think it's still a work in progress," St. Jean said. "I think the summer's not over yet. And he's going to continue to get better. I think we'll continue to see as he gets more in-game shape with some rhythm. He's been doing a lot of training, and now he's going to be playing five-on-five competition." Dropping a few pounds was only half the equation for Doncic. To truly reach his maximum potential, he'll have to improve his durability and stamina so that he can stay consistent for all four quarters on the court. That contrasts greatly with Doncic's time in Dallas, when he would be so worn out at the end of games that he'd struggle to play up to his standards. In Los Angeles, Doncic has been inspired to pursue a different path and rectify his mistakes of the past. The process started this summer, as he entered a new training regimen and diet plan. Most importantly, he's been spending time in the gym and on the court helping Slovenia in this year's EuroBasket tournament.
