Erwic Awards crown SA's top women in construction
The 2025 Empowerment and Recognition of Women in Construction (Erwic) Awards celebrated the resilience, innovation and leadership of women transforming South Africa's construction industry. The sixth annual event took place on Thursday evening at the Houghton Hotel in Johannesburg, drawing industry leaders, government officials and media representatives to honour trailblazers in the industry. Public works and infrastructure minister Dean Macpherson opened the ceremony by recognising the courage of women who have overcome stereotypes in boardrooms and on construction sites. "Our goal is to advocate and equip women to compete in the open market and win, because they are capable, qualified and competitive. I believe it is possible and I will champion this for the remainder of my term,' said Macpherson. He highlighted the multiplier effect of women-led projects, including creating employment, stimulating local suppliers and creating infrastructure that enables further growth. He also noted that over the past year the department's expanded public works programme created more than 54,000 jobs, a 4.6% increase. Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) CEO Bongani Dladla described the awards as a celebration of women who were not just participants in the sector but catalysts for change. "Whether women are starting and running their own companies or being appointed in senior positions in companies building the country, the Erwic Awards highlight the transformation and empowerment they bring to the built environment.' Dladla applauded the finalists for reimagining leadership in construction, from upgrading rural water schemes to delivering clean energy and safer construction sites. "Building like a woman means bringing resilience, innovation and empathy to every project. Through these efforts we have started to change the culture of the industry,' said Dladla. CIDB chairperson Khulile Nzo echoed the sentiment, emphasising transformation was a movement, not an event. "I am proud to see that the CIDB's programmes are creating real opportunities for emerging female contractors, supporting their growth and ensuring they have a seat at the table where decisions are made.' Nzo highlighted the impact of the flagship Build Programme, which has trained ,ore than 260 women contractors in construction management systems, with a further 200 set to follow next year. Some 66km of the N2 from Mtamvuna River to the Hibberdene interchange will be upgraded in the next three to five years. Samantha Dladla, project manager of the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited's (Sanral) KZN, said that it's a flagship project in the province. 'The construction work will be divided into six packages. The first package includes dualling of the CH Mitchell Bridge, the second will be from Mtamvuma to Port Edward, the third from Port Edward to Mpenjati River, the fourth from Mpenjati River to Mbizana River, the fifth from Mbizana River to Marburg, and the sixth from Umtentweni to Hibberdene,' said Dladla. She said the project is significant because it forms part of Sanral's flagship N2 Wild Coast Project from East London to the Mtamvuna River. KwaDukuza municipal workers end strike, set to return to work
After three days of protest action, KwaDukuza municipal workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) will return to work tomorrow. This was confirmed by SAMWU KwaDukuza secretary, Nkululeko Dladla, who said the decision followed engagement between the union and municipal leadership. While not all grievances have been resolved, Dladla said the union welcomed the willingness of Municipal Manager Nhlanhla Mdakane to address workers directly and commit to further meetings. 'The municipal manager came to speak to us, and even though some of the responses were not satisfactory, we now have a channel to discuss unresolved issues. There is no reason to continue with the strike under these circumstances,' said Dladla. Workers marched from the Ballito Taxi Rank to the Nokukhanya Building, opposite the Ballito clinic on Monday and Tuesday. The demonstration follows growing frustration over what workers said was the municipality's failure to respond to demands first raised during a strike in KwaDukuza's CBD in May. The protest caused severe traffic congestion, and Ballito Drive was left littered with debris as demonstrators hurled rubbish into the streets on both days. Earlier today, Mdakane issued an internal memorandum to all staff, condemning the continued strike and what he described as violations of the agreed picketing rules. According to the memo, the strike went beyond the legal parameters set by the Bargaining Council, and management has reserved the right to pursue disciplinary action where necessary. In the memo, Mdakane responded to several concerns raised by the union. He said that the Local Labour Forum did meet on June 25 with full management attendance and that issues on the agenda, including job evaluation and the implementation of a six-day work week, were discussed. He noted that job evaluation processes are progressing, with most job descriptions already submitted and some still being refined. On the contentious issue of municipal grading, Mdakane dismissed claims that a resolution exists to upgrade the municipality to grade 5. He said no such resolution has been adopted and emphasised that grading falls under the authority of the South African Local Government Bargaining Council. He added that attempts to negotiate grading at the municipal level were irregular and that the issue was already on the national bargaining agenda. Regarding the union's demand for accountability in the R35.7 million fraud scandal, Mdakane confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that most of the money has been recovered. Civil and criminal proceedings are still underway to trace the remainder and three separate investigations are being conducted by the municipality, the police's Special Commercial Crimes Unit, and the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Responding to calls for his suspension, Mdakane said due process must be followed. 'Samwu should respect the laws and regulations they expect to be applied to all workers. No individual can be suspended without following legal procedures,' said Mdakane. On the matter of the five and six-day work structure, Mdakane said that Samwu had not submitted a counterproposal despite the issue being on the agenda for the past two years. He noted that while Samwu had indicated that the matter should be handled at the bargaining council level, they still included it among the reasons for the strike. Mdakane reiterated the municipality's stance of 'no work, no pay' and said any employees who do not return to work risk disciplinary action. 'We are calling on Samwu leadership to guide their members honestly and responsibly. 'The municipality remains open to lawful and constructive engagement. We will continue to implement fair decisions following the law,' said Mdakane. Stay in the loop with The North Coast Courier on Facebook, X, Instagram & YouTube for the latest news. Municipal workers to strike in Ballito on Monday
Hundreds of Samwu-affiliated municipal workers are expected to march in Ballito on Monday, June 30 while on strike. This according to Samwu (South African Municipal Workers Union) KwaDukuza secretary, Nkululeko Dladla, who said the action comes as a result of previous strike demands not being met. The march is expected to begin at the Ballito Taxi Rank at 8am and finish at the KwaDukuza municipal (KDM) building opposite the Ballito Clinic on Leonora Drive where a memorandum will be handed over to the municipality. However, KDM spokesperson Sifiso Zulu said the municipality had received no formal communication from the union about the strike. Meanwhile, iLembe district police communications official, Priya Nunkumar-Bukum, said Umhlali Saps is aware of the proposed strike and confirmed there will be additional officers, including public order police, on the ground. Residents should still prepare for major traffic delays and potential lane closures. Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible. According to Dladla, frustration among municipal workers has been growing since the last Samwu strike, which lasted for four days between May 5-8. Over that time, some local beaches did not have lifeguard protection and some areas in the north of KwaDukuza had no waste collection service. 'We went on strike and handed over our memorandum, but we have not received all the answers we needed,' said Dladla. 'That strike was suspended because negotiations were taking place. Since we are not reaching agreements on some of those issues raised, workers decided to take it to the streets.' Samwu's demands from the previous strike include: Implementation of a 2022 council resolution to align all municipal salaries to Grade 5. A reduction in the working week from six to five days. Accountability for the R35.7-million stolen during an embezzlement scandal in January. The suspension of municipal manager Nhlanhla Mdakane, whom the union accuses of failing to implement adequate cyber security measures. The union gave the municipality until July 1 to act on these demands and claims they were not sufficiently met. At the time, Zulu said the municipality would defer to decisions on municipal grading made during national bargaining agreements. In a full sitting of council on Thursday, June 26, it was revealed that some progress had since been made in negotiations between the South African Local Government Association (Salga) and municipal unions at the national bargaining committee. At talks on May 28-30, the parties agreed that one system of categorisation should be used for senior managers and employees, with further details still to be negotiated. The parties also agreed to consult '21st-century remuneration experts' to develop new salary and wage scales. According to Salga, further negotiations are set for July 29-31.
