Conman cheats 19 people of Rs 55 lakh claiming to be then CM Eknath Shinde's personal assistant
Nashik: A man from Jalgaon defrauded 19 people of Rs 55 lakh by posing as the personal assistant of then Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde, police said on Sunday. The case, initially registered with the Shanipeth police station of Jalgaon on Friday, was subsequently transferred to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Jalgaon police. Inspector Sandeep Patil of the EOW said that teams have been formed to locate the accused, and he will soon be arrested. According to the complaint filed on Aug 8, the accused approached the complainant in Nov 2024 through an acquaintance, claiming to be the PA of Eknath Shinde, who was overseeing administrative work in the Mantralay. The accused presented a Maharashtra govt identity card and claimed that he could secure a job in the Railways or have any other work at the Mantralay level done. He further persuaded the complainant by offering to obtain flats under the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) schemes and facilitate car rentals through the Railways. The complainant, suspecting fraud, investigated and discovered that the accused had deceived another 18 people with similar promises of Railway jobs, contracts for various Railway projects, bank loan approvals, and MHADA flats, police said. "In July, one of the victims received a call from the accused, who admitted that he was not the PA of the then chief minister Eknath Shinde and had provided false information. When threatened with a police complaint, the accused responded that nothing would happen to him," Patil said. Realising the extent of the fraud, a complaint was lodged on Aug 8, accusing the man of cheating a total of 19 people of Rs 55.6 lakh. RMC cracks down on violators of single-use plastic ban in city
1 2 Ranchi: Despite the ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) enforced in July 2022, plastic bags, cups, and disposable plates and glasses remain in use across the city. Now, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has ramped up its enforcement efforts with a fresh drive that began on August 1. On Thursday, its teams carried out inspections in Kanke as part of a wider sweep beginning last week and covering more than 10 areas, including Harmu, Upper Bazar, Hindpiri, Main Road, Kutchery, and Ratu Road. During the inspections, officials seized banned items from several vendors and shopkeepers and issued on-the-spot warnings. Some cases are also being forwarded for penalties. City manager Ambuj Singh said over Rs 53,000 in fines have been collected since January 2024 for SUP violations, including Rs 12,000 since the new phase of inspections began this month. "So far, we have issued more than 50 penalties. Enforcement has become tighter, especially in market clusters," he said. While alternatives such as biodegradable carry bags, paper packaging and cloth bags are now widely available in local markets, affordability and durability remain a concern among the users. Microsoft is again caught in China vs US cyber battle. This time China has accused America of using Microsoft bug to spy on the Chinese Military. According to a report in Bloomberg, China has accused the US of exploiting a flaw in Microsoft Corp's email servers to steal military data and launch cyberattacks on its defense sector. The accusations come from the Cyber Security Association of China. The association is backed by the powerful Cyberspace Administration of China. In a statement, the Cyber Security Association of China said that US actors had been linked to two major cyberattacks on Chinese military companies without naming them. They exploited flaws in Microsoft Exchange to control the servers of a key company in the defense sector for nearly a year, it added.
