Villages in Gujarat witness return of illegal immigrants from the US
Ahmedabad: Several villages in north Gujarat are witnessing a quiet but steady influx of elderly couples and single adults who once left Indian shores for the United States, many of them as illegal immigrants. Now, they are self-deporting to avoid detention as the Trump administration enforces stricter immigration laws. Dingucha, Jhulasan, Jetalpur, Nardipur, and other villages have observed a noticeable rise in population over the past few months, with many such returnees. Local officials and sources estimate the number of self-deportees to be at least 220. Many of them were recently issued Aadhaar cards and have settled back in villages across Mehsana and Gandhinagar districts, long identified by state and central agencies as hubs for illegal immigration. "They no longer have the option of shelter or asylum and want to avoid legal trouble. That's why they are leaving voluntarily," he said. A recent case involves a 65-year-old Mehsana resident. He entered the US illegally in 2009 and returned to Gujarat via Delhi on July 7. On arrival, he was booked for allegedly cheating the Indian immigration system. "In the last three to four months, Dingucha has seen around 100 new residents, many seeking local documents," said Hasmukh Parmar, the village talati. Residents note the change. "Earlier, the village was sparsely populated, with many people in the US. Now, temple courtyards and benches in gathering spots are full again. Those who have returned stand out — they are fairer, healthier, and well-dressed," said Bhavin Patel, a Pansar resident. Food delivery executive falls into open drain in Hyderabad, saved by locals
Hyderabad: A food delivery executive, Syed Farhan, had a miraculous escape after he fell into an open drain at TKR Kaman near Karmanghat on Saturday night. Farhan was on his way to deliver an order, amid heavy rainfall, when the incident took place. Fortunately, locals rescued him using a rope though his bike and mobile phone got swept away in the floodwaters. Eyewitnesses claimed Farhan could not spot the open drain as the road was overflowing and there was no signage put up by the authorities to alert commuters. They demanded Meerpet municipal corporation (MMC) — that is in-charge of the area — to fix this issue soon. Sources said that the sewer pipeline works related to Jillelguda were left open after completion, without installing any barricades in their jurisdiction, which led to the accident. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad "We will inspect the site and implement necessary precautions," said an official from MMC, when asked about it. Gig workers' groups, meanwhile, blamed delivery platforms. "The incident is a direct consequence of platforms prioritising profits over worker safety. This is not about a Rs 10 or Rs 15 rain bonus; it's about whether a worker returns home alive. Management must take full responsibility by immediately providing a new mobile phone, repairing the damaged bike, and compensating for the loss of payment," said Shaik Salauddin, founder president of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo According to TGPWU, GHMC has already issued advisories to aggregator companies about the dangers of sending riders out in extreme weather, but these warnings continue to be ignored. "Despite extreme weather forecasts, aggregator companies continue to push workers out, disregarding safety concerns. We urge the GHMC commissioner to take strict action against any delivery aggregator company that endangers workers' lives," TGPWU highlighted. Thiruvananthapuram corporation's seed ball campaign enters World Book of Records
Thiruvananthapuram : Seed ball-making campaign organised by city corporation at Putharikandam Maidan on Saturday morning secured a place in the World Book of Records. The campaign, part of the city's broader environmental protection initiatives, saw the enthusiastic participation of over 7,000 students, exceeding the original plan to involve 6,000 participants. The campaign involved preparing seed balls – mixtures of soil, fertilizer and seeds – which will later be deposited in various locations across the city to promote urban afforestation and enhance greenery. The large-scale participation and the speed of execution helped the event earn a spot in the record books, authorities said. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan who inaugurated the city's Green Budget 2025 at the venue praised the seed ball initiative as a model programme for other civic bodies in the state and beyond. "Thiruvananthapuram has become the first city in Kerala to implement a Green Budget. This is a model initiative that local self-govts across the state can emulate," he said during the inaugural speech. The chief minister added that in the face of mounting climate challenges, such as those highlighted at COP 29 summit in 2024, where no concrete guidelines emerged, it was imperative that local actions be taken without delay. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo "This campaign creates awareness and demonstrates our commitment to environment-friendly practices. RTA meet on Aug 18 to decide on zones for e-autos
Mangaluru: After the Karnataka govt decided to issue permits for electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) is set to lay conditions, including assigning rural or urban zones for the vehicles. The govt has withdrawn its relaxation from the permit rules for electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws. Accordingly, permits will be issued to all such autorickshaws without collecting any fee. Earlier, electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws were exempt from the permit rules and were allowed to operate across the district. With the permit rule back, the RTA is also considering zoning regulations for rural and urban autorickshaws. RTO Sridhar K Mallad said that a meeting of the RTA scheduled for Aug 18 will discuss the issue. "A final decision will be taken at the RTA meeting to be chaired by the deputy commissioner. The conditions to be laid to issue permits for electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws will also be taken during the meeting. We are planning to implement the zones for autorickshaws, which existed earlier, and this will also be discussed in the meeting," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo A Transport Adalat will be held on Aug 11, where major issues pertaining to the department will be discussed, and the agenda will be placed before the RTA meeting on Aug 18. There are more than 2,700 e-autorickshaws in the district, he added. It may be recalled that various unions of autorickshaw drivers and people's representatives opposed the permit relaxation allowed only for electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws. Following this, the state govt agreed to the demand of autorickshaw drivers to require e-autorickshaws to obtain permits, just like other autorickshaws. The state govt issued an order in July to revoke the central govt's directive and mandate that all vehicles using methanol and ethanol must obtain permits under the Motor Vehicles Act. The govt has also decided to grant these permits without any fees. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
