Palestinian Photojournalist Fatma Hassona, Killed in Israeli Missile Strike, Remembered at Emotional Cannes Premiere of ‘Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk'

The Cannes world premiere of Sepideh Farsi's documentary 'Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk' turned into a moving tribute to its protagonist Fatma Hassona, who was killed by an Israeli missile just weeks earlier. An emotional Farsi fought back tears as she introduced the film and afterwards held aloft a photo of Hassona. In the film, it was revealed that Farsi and Hassona had spoken about the possibility of her leaving Gaza and attending the festival. On the first day of Cannes, Hassona was named in a letter signed by more than 370 industry figures that condemned her death and also criticized 'silence' from the cinema industry over Gaza. Signed by names such as Mark Ruffalo, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, Melissa Barrera, Yorgos Lanthimos, Javier Bardem, Hannah Einbinder, Pedro Almodóvar, David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Leigh, Alex Gibney, Viggo Mortensen, Cynthia Nixon, Tessa Ross and many more, the letter also called out AMPAS for its 'lack of support' for 'No Other Land' co-director Hamdan Ballal after his arrest by the Israeli army. 'We are ashamed of such passivity,' it read, concluding: 'For Fatma, for all those who die in indifference. Cinema has a duty to carry their messages, to reflect our societies. Let's act before it's too late.' After the news of Hassona's death, the ACID team put out a statement 'Her smile was as magical as her tenacity: bearing witness, photographing Gaza, distributing food despite the bombs, mourning and hunger. We heard her story, rejoiced at each of her appearances to see her alive, we feared for her,' it said. 'We had watched and programmed a film in which this young woman's life force seemed like a miracle. This is no longer the same film that we are going to support and present in all theaters, starting with Cannes. All of us, filmmakers and spectators alike, must be worthy of her light.' Kim Novak Documentary Biopic ‘Kim Novak's Vertigo' Acquired by Dogwoof (EXCLUSIVE)

Dogwoof has acquired world sales rights for Kim Novak documentary biopic 'Kim Novak's Vertigo,' directed and written by Alexandre O. Philippe. 'Kim Novak's Vertigo,' which is a working title, is in post-production, and is due for delivery this fall. It marks Dogwoof's fourth collaboration with Philippe, following '78/52,' 'Memory: The Origins of Alien' and 'Lynch/Oz.' More from Variety 'Robin and the Hoods,' Starring Naomie Harris and Gwendoline Christie, Sells to U.S., Multiple Other Territories, Ahead of Cannes Market (EXCLUSIVE) World War II Drama 'Never Alone' From Klaus Haro Sells to Multiple Territories (EXCLUSIVE) Martin Scorsese to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Italy's Taormina Film Festival (EXCLUSIVE) The film is an intimate portrait of the fiercely independent star, who left Hollywood behind to live life on her own terms, 'revealing a haunting, resilient journey of art, identity and authenticity in the shadow of one of cinema's most iconic roles,' according to Dogwoof. The film will blend rare archival footage with personal reflections from Novak and glimpses into her reclusive life along Oregon's wild Rogue River, and traces her path from mid-century cinema icon to fiercely private artist. Alfred Hitchcock's 'Vertigo' remains her most iconic role, and the film explores how that performance — and the duality it captured — mirrors the ongoing tension between image and identity that shaped her life. There has been a resurgence of media interest in Novak recently, following the announcement of Colman Domingo's directorial debut, 'Scandalous!,' starring Sydney Sweeney in the role of Novak and David Jonsson as Sammy Davis Jr. Doc's production company is Gull House Films. The producers are Terri Piñon and Philippe, and the executive producer is Sue Cameron. The director of photography is Robert Muratore. The second camera operator is Jeff Pointer. The editor is David Lawrence. The composer is Jon Hegel. Sound design and sound mixing is by Phillip Lloyd Hegel. Playtime Launches Canneseries Winner Rafael Cobos' Debut Feature, ‘Golpes' (EXCLUSIVE)

Paris-based Playtime is launching worldwide sales on action thriller 'Golpes,' the directorial feature debut of Spanish screenwriter Rafael Cobos, whose first outing as a helmer, 'The Left-handed Son,' won best short form series at 2022's Canneseries. 'Golpes' stars four-time Goya winner Luis Tosar ('Cell 211'). More from Variety Kirill Serebrennikov Sets Cast for French-Language Feature 'Après,' With Ludivine Sagnier, Louis Garrel, Vincent Macaigne (EXCLUSIVE) Kim Novak Documentary Biopic 'Kim Novak's Vertigo' Acquired by Dogwoof (EXCLUSIVE) 'Robin and the Hoods,' Starring Naomie Harris and Gwendoline Christie, Sells to U.S., Multiple Other Territories, Ahead of Cannes Market (EXCLUSIVE) It's set in 1982, as Spain gallops towards a bright democratic future thanks to a Pact of Forgetting, decriminalizing human rights violations under Francisco Franco's dictatorship. 'Golpes' turns on Migueli (Jesus Carroza), a hardened ex-con who reunites his old crew for a series of bold heists — not for riches or revenge, but to reclaim the land where his father lies in an unmarked grave, soon to be erased by developers. With his brother, Sabino (Tosar) — a police officer — closing in and each job spiraling further into violence, Migueli must gamble everything to preserve a piece of history before it's lost forevever. Migueli is played by Jesús Carroza, a standout in the Cobos scripted 'Prison 77' and 'Survival' episode of series 'Apagón.' Cobos has said that 'Golpes' is 'a subtle fable that attempts to depict a country in the midst of transition – a contradictory, disorientated country unable to settle the score with its past. It's a thriller about blood ties and memory.' 'Playtime likes to have a diversified lineup and this new addition to our slate gives us the opportunity to bring to the market a high quality thriller. We know that buyers in Cannes are not only looking for festival films but also for highly marketable audience pleasers like 'Golpes,'' said Playtime co-CEO Nicolas Brigaud-Robert. Vaca Films ('Cell 211') produces with Grupo Tranquilo and Playtime Production. A career-long co-scribe on the movies and series of Alberto Rodríguez, Cobos won Spanish Academy screenplay Goyas for 'Marshland' and 'Smoke & Mirrors.'
