Hong Kong's Cinema Day returns on May 10 with tickets priced at HK$30

Hong Kong residents can once again enjoy films at the theatres for a mere HK$30 (US$3.90) with the return of the annual Cinema Day event on May 10. Advertisement The government announced the city's third consecutive Cinema Day with the release of a 30-second advertisement starring martial artist Donnie Yen Ji-dan, who tells viewers: 'You won't miss it, right?' The event was first introduced in 2023 as part of the 'Happy Hong Kong' campaign, a government drive designed to bring some cheer to the city amid the coronavirus pandemic. Similar to previous editions, Hong Kong's film-goers were able to purchase tickets for films across the city for HK$30. The Hong Kong Theatres Association is organiser of both past and coming Cinema Day events, with more details to be announced later this month. Early Donnie Yen movies before Ip Man revisited, from Drunken Tai Chi to Cheetah on Fire

Today, Donnie Yen Ji-dan is unquestionably one of the most famous Hong Kong film actors in the world. Advertisement Yen's superlative martial arts skills should have turned him into a star when he made his film debut in 1984, but it somehow took him almost 25 years to reap the acclaim he deserved, coming with the Ip Man films in the 2000s. 'In the 1990s, Yen seemed fated to play bad guys in big films and good guys in small films,' critic Grady Hendrix said in 2012. 'Producers just wouldn't take the risk on him as a leading man.' Just this week, we were greeted with news that he is set to direct and star in a stand-alone spin-off feature based on his character Caine from the Hollywood action franchise John Wick. Below we re-evaluate some of the films Yen made at the start of his career. 1. Drunken Tai Chi (1984)

Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Park must achieve highest standards to succeed

Hong Kong's old Kai Tak airport, which recorded its first flight 100 years ago, became a famous landmark, welcoming visitors from around the world until its closure in 1998. Advertisement Now, the city hopes a new HK$30 billion (US$3.9 billion) sports and entertainment complex on the site will serve a similar purpose, drawing crowds for a glittering array of 'mega-events'. The official opening of Kai Tak Sports Park on Saturday, offering a star-studded performance, was a proud moment. It has been a long time coming. The idea was first floated in 2007. Martial arts hero Donnie Yen Ji-dan faced off against Olympic gold medal winner Vivian Kong Man-wai in a fencing duel. Along with Cantopop queen Joey Yung Cho-yee, they were among the popular performers who joined Hong Kong and mainland athletes for more than two hours of entertainment. Advertisement This first real test for the stadium, which can accommodate 50,000 spectators, generally went smoothly. That was good to see, but bigger events are to come. Less than 34,000 people attended, well below capacity.
