Former GM Suggests 'Change of Scenery' for $50 Million Outfielder to Ignite Rangers
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Texas Rangers offense hasn't performed well at all to start the season, as they've averaged just 3.2 runs per game through the opening 35 games. While Leody Taveras hasn't been poor in centerfield, he certainly hasn't been great either with just a .241 average, one home run and eight RBI. That prompted the team to put him on waivers on Sunday. Former baseball general manager Jim Bowden believes the Rangers should acquire Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox (subscription required). CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - APRIL 12: Luis Robert, Jr #88 of the Chicago White Sox hits a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning of a game against the Boston Red Sox at... CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - APRIL 12: Luis Robert, Jr #88 of the Chicago White Sox hits a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning of a game against the Boston Red Sox at Rate Field on April 12, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. More"The Rangers were built to win now and a trade for Robert could make sense as he's only 27 but under team control through 2027," wrote Bowden for The Athletic. "He's off to a dismal start, hitting just .195, but has five home runs and league-leading 15 stolen bases. ... Opposing teams can pitch around him because the White Sox have no one in their lineup to protect him. He could benefit from a change of scenery." Bowden took it one step further by even proposing a mock trade between the two teams. Here is the full proposal: Texas Rangers acquire: OF Luis Robert Jr. Chicago White Sox acquire: CF Dylan Dreiling (Rangers No. 9 prospect) and LHP Kohl Drake (Rangers No. 12 prospect) "Perhaps a package of Dreiling and Drake could get this deal done," wrote Bowden. "Dreiling, a second-round pick in last year's draft, would be headliner going back to Chicago in this proposed trade. A left-handed power hitter, he has slashed .250/.350/.364 with four doubles, two homers and six steals this season at High A. "Dreiling, 22, profiles as a 25-home run hitter who can play all three outfield positions. Drake, 24, has a 3.31 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings this season in Double A. He's averaged 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings and 3.2 walks per nine since making his pro debut in 2023." Currently, the Rangers are 17-18 and in fourth place in the American League West. They are four games behind the division-leading Mariners. Adding Robert Jr. would give them a chance to get hot and slowly climb their way up the ladder to push for a division title. Drive get first win over Spartanburgers
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Despite a three-run bottom of the ninth, the Hub City Spartanburgers (10-8) fell to the Greenville Drive (8-9) at Fifth Third Park Thursday, 6-3. The Drive pieced together enough offense to get to the 'Burger bullpen; two RBI groundouts and Dylan Dreiling's third knock of the night couldn't overcome a six-run deficit. After two days off, Dreiling has made a loud return to the top of manager Chad Comer's batting order. The lefty lined three hits, one against each of the three Drive pitchers. Through 14 games, Dreiling, the Rangers' No. 10 prospect per MLB Pipeline, is hitting .273, and averaging a hit per game. He also swiped his third bag of the season Thursday. Fellow national champion at Tennessee Cal Stark stepped up for Hub City, smacking three singles for the second time this season. Stark's first three-hit game came on Sunday, April 6, the finale of a three-game set in Aberdeen. Hub City's Josh Trentadue (L, 1-1) stranded a runner at third in each of the first two innings. The starter could not keep Greenville off the board in the third though. After a one-out walk to Yophery Rodriguez, Nazzan Zanetello scorched a double into the right-center field gap to score Rodriguez from first. The Spartanburgers made Greenville starter Hayden Mullins work, but didn't have many baserunners to show for it. Dreiling's leadoff single in the first was the only base hit through four innings for Hub City. Mullins retired 12 straight batters after the Dreiling hit, with six strikeouts. Victor Simeon replaced Trentadue in a 1-0 game to begin the fifth. After three walks and two strikeouts, he exited in favor of Joey Danielson. The new reliever walked home a run before a popup ended the threat for Greenville. Zach Fogell (W, 1-0) maintained a 2-run lead as he replaced Mullins in the home half of the fifth. After a pair of singles from Gleider Figuereo and Cal Stark, Fogell retired the side with a trio of strikeouts. Hub City picked up scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh from Danielson and Mailon Felix. Adam Smith (S, 1) replaced Fogell with two outs in the sixth. The first righty arm of the evening for Greenville needed just one pitch to end the sixth before tossing scoreless frames in both the seventh and eighth. Felix surrendered one run in the eighth on an RBI single from Kolby Johnson. Greenville opened the game up in the top of the ninth. The Drive struck for three runs against Seth Clark. Zanetello completed a three-hit day with an RBI double, and catcher Hudson White tagged his first career triple to drive home a run. The first three reached in the bottom of the ninth for Hub City against Smith with a Disla walk and singles from Figuereo and Stark. After a pair of RBI groundouts, Hub City was down to its final out. Theo Hardy walked and Dreiling mashed a run-scoring double to make it a three-run game. Anthony Gutierrez stepped to the plate representing the tying run, but a night after his walk-off heroics, he struck out swinging to end the game. Hub City and Greenville square up at 7:05 p.m. ET for game four Friday night. It's another Fifth Third Fireworks Friday at the ballpark. David Davalillo (0-0, 0.79 ERA) starts for the Spartanburgers against Juan Valera (0-0, 7.30 ERA). Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Oklahoma Sooners add transfer portal defensive tackle
The Oklahoma Sooners picked up another commitment out of the transfer portal, this time adding redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Siolaa Ricky Lolohea. Lolohea joins the Sooners after spending one season at Utah State in 2024. The former three-star prospect originally committed to Oklahoma State as a part of the 2023 recruiting class and redshirted that season with the Cowboys. He also held offers from SMU, Texas Tech, San Diego State, and North Texas. Advertisement He played just under 150 snaps for the Aggies in 2024 under Oklahoma linebackers coach Nate Dreiling. Dreiling was the interim head coach and defensive coordinator for Utah State last season. In eight games, Lolohea recorded 10 total tackles and tackle for loss. Pro Football Focus credited him with two total pressures. His season high snap count last season came against Washington State, so Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer. From Dreiling's experience coaching Lolohea and the new Sooners offensive tandem's experience playing against him, Oklahoma is well acquainted with what the nose tackle out of Euless Trinity brings to the table. Lolohea is a legit nose tackle, coming to the Sooners at 6-foot-3 and 330 pounds. He'll join a defensive tackle depth chart that's one of the deepest positions on the roster. However veterans Damonic Williams and Gracen Halton will likely be off for the NFL after this season, making Lolohea's addition vital to the Sooners now and in the future.
