Mara's proposed financing scheme can boost Bumiputera role in renewable energy, tech industries

Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Rubiah Wang, said that while the proposal is promising, no official decision has been made as it still requires further discussions at a higher level. She was speaking to reporters during a walkabout at the DuriCendol premises on Friday, accompanied by Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan. 'As you are all aware, Sarawak is now home to many technology-based and green energy industries, and many of our sub-contractors are involved in these sectors,' she said. 'Their main challenge, as highlighted by YB Lidam, is in securing capital (financing).' Rubiah said she had raised the possibility with Mara of setting up a targeted financing scheme to address this gap. 'I have asked Mara to look into the possibility of creating such a fund so we can produce more Bumiputera entrepreneurs in technology and renewable energy sectors in Sarawak. That is our intention,' she said. 'However, this matter is still under consideration and must be brought to the attention of the ministry and Mara management for further deliberation.' She described the proposal as a meaningful initiative with good intentions aimed at strengthening the entrepreneurial landscape in Sarawak. Meanwhile, a press release distributed to the media during the event stated that Mara, as an agency under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, is responsible for entrepreneur development. It provides various facilities and assistance through a comprehensive and focused entrepreneurial ecosystem. Among those present at the event was Mohamad Hazemi Mat, 31, owner of Amnies F&B Enterprise (DuriCendol). Mohamad Hazemi, who holds a disabled persons card due to a hearing impairment, is one of the many entrepreneurs benefitting from support programmes and is a testament to inclusive entrepreneurship. Mara approves RM500,000 OKU financing scheme, two entrepreneurs in Sarawak among recipients

Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang said among the recipients were two OKU entrepreneurs from Sarawak – one in Matang, Kuching, and another in Sibu. 'The maximum financing provided under this scheme is RM50,000 and it is interest-free. For example, if one borrows RM50,000, they repay RM50,000. If they borrow RM20,000, they repay RM20,000,' she told reporters after a walkabout at the DuriCendol premises here last night. Rubiah explained that like other Mara financing schemes, recipients are also given training in business skills and supported through specialised programmes to strengthen their ventures. In Sibu, one of the recipients is 31-year-old Mohamad Hazemi Mat, the owner of Amnies F&B Enterprise, which operates DuriCendol. He previously worked at RH Hotel here, Hilton Hotel and Secret Recipe in Kuching. Rubiah highlighted that what makes DuriCendol unique is that seven of Mohamad Hazemi's staff members are also OKU. In contrast, she said, the OKU entrepreneur in Matang employs staff without disabilities. DuriCendol has been operating since December 2023 and has shown strong performance, generating over RM35,000 in monthly income. 'And based on the record, his business is profitable where the monthly income exceeds RM35,000 – perhaps due to its strategic location,' she said. 'His signature dish is durian cendol, with durians such as Musang King, Black Thorn, and D24 sourced from Kuala Lumpur to leave a lasting impression on customers,' Rubiah said. She added that Mara would consider extending further assistance to Mohamad Hazemi should he wish to expand his business in the future. Beyond OKU assistance, Rubiah said Mara has spent over RM30 million to support 250 entrepreneurs in Sarawak this year. Nationally, some 60,000 active entrepreneurs are benefiting from Mara facilities. 'Mara has produced entrepreneurs across micro, small and medium categories. Notably, 60 per cent fall under the micro category with annual earnings below RM300,000. Mara provides not just funding through grants and loans, but also training to create a complete ecosystem for entrepreneurs,' she said. Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan was also present. MARA Approves Over 20 Assistance Applications From PWD Entrepreneurs This Year
SIBU, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- More than 20 applications for assistance from entrepreneurs who are people with disabilities (PWD) across the country have been approved by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) this year, involving an allocation of over RM500,000. Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang said the assistance includes grants and interest-free loans of up to RM50,000 per person, depending on business needs. "In Sarawak, two disabled entrepreneurs have received this special funding, including Mohamad Hazemi Mat, 31, the owner of Duri Cendol here, who is also deaf, and another in Matang, Kuching," she said when met by reporters after a friendly visit to the Duri Cendol premises last night. Rubiah said Mohamad Hazemi's business, which has been operating since December 2023, is now recording a monthly income exceeding RM35,000, in addition to employing seven deaf and mute disabled workers. She emphasised that MARA is committed to helping the disabled become successful entrepreneurs through a comprehensive support ecosystem that includes training, grants, loans, monitoring, and business development programmes. Rubiah said she had also proposed to MARA the establishment of a special fund to assist Bumiputera contractors in Sarawak involved in the high-tech and renewable energy (green energy) industries. The funds, she said, is aimed at producing more Bumiputera entrepreneurs in the technology and green energy sectors, thereby opening up new business opportunities in Sarawak. "I have asked MARA if they can help create such a funds so that we can produce more Bumiputera entrepreneurs in technology and renewable energy industries. "We need to bring this proposal to MARA's management and also to the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development itself for a decision," she said.
