Mara approves RM500,000 OKU financing scheme, two entrepreneurs in Sarawak among recipients
SIBU (Aug 16): Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has approved more than 20 applications nationwide under its special financing scheme for persons with disabilities (OKU) this year, with an allocation exceeding RM500,000.
Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang said among the recipients were two OKU entrepreneurs from Sarawak – one in Matang, Kuching, and another in Sibu.
'The maximum financing provided under this scheme is RM50,000 and it is interest-free. For example, if one borrows RM50,000, they repay RM50,000. If they borrow RM20,000, they repay RM20,000,' she told reporters after a walkabout at the DuriCendol premises here last night.
Rubiah explained that like other Mara financing schemes, recipients are also given training in business skills and supported through specialised programmes to strengthen their ventures.
In Sibu, one of the recipients is 31-year-old Mohamad Hazemi Mat, the owner of Amnies F&B Enterprise, which operates DuriCendol.

Mohamad Hazemi, who has a hearing disability, is a graduate of Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic with a special skills certificate in hotel and catering. He previously worked at RH Hotel here, Hilton Hotel and Secret Recipe in Kuching.
Rubiah highlighted that what makes DuriCendol unique is that seven of Mohamad Hazemi's staff members are also OKU.
In contrast, she said, the OKU entrepreneur in Matang employs staff without disabilities.
DuriCendol has been operating since December 2023 and has shown strong performance, generating over RM35,000 in monthly income.
'And based on the record, his business is profitable where the monthly income exceeds RM35,000 – perhaps due to its strategic location,' she said.
'His signature dish is durian cendol, with durians such as Musang King, Black Thorn, and D24 sourced from Kuala Lumpur to leave a lasting impression on customers,' Rubiah said.
She added that Mara would consider extending further assistance to Mohamad Hazemi should he wish to expand his business in the future.
Beyond OKU assistance, Rubiah said Mara has spent over RM30 million to support 250 entrepreneurs in Sarawak this year.
Nationally, some 60,000 active entrepreneurs are benefiting from Mara facilities.
'Mara has produced entrepreneurs across micro, small and medium categories. Notably, 60 per cent fall under the micro category with annual earnings below RM300,000. Mara provides not just funding through grants and loans, but also training to create a complete ecosystem for entrepreneurs,' she said.

Chai (third from left), Chong (fourth from right) and PropNex Sabah's team members at the awards presentation ceremony. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): PropNex Sabah sees Semporna as Sabah's next property hotspot, with villas and the district's first commercial suites already in the pipeline. Prices start from RM2xx,000, with investors projected to enjoy at least 6% rental yields, fuelled by tourism and commercial growth, PropNex Sabah said in a statement on Sunday. Meanwhile, commercial properties in Kota Kinabalu remain in limited supply, pointing to rising demand as more businesses and retailers establish a presence in the state capital. PropNex Sabah has once again made its mark on Malaysia's real estate landscape after clinching two major titles at the National Real Estate Awards (NREA) 2025 — Sabah Firm of the Year and Residential Firm of the Year. The victory cements the firm's position as one of the state's leading real estate agencies, adding to its growing list of national recognitions. Since 2022, PropNex Sabah has won multiple awards, including Sabah Residential Real Estate Firm of the Year for three consecutive years (2022–2024) and Sabah Real Estate Firm of the Year in 2023. PropNex Sabah's vision, according to its leadership, is to transform negotiators into trusted professionals while lifting industry standards in line with Sabah's rising international appeal. The state has been attracting strong investor interest, particularly from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea and Germany. The Sabah Malaysia My Second Home (SMM2H) programme has also boosted demand, drawing retirees and long-term residents seeking lifestyle properties ranging from seafront residences to mountain retreats. Agency leader Philomena Chai credited developers and partners for the win. 'These awards are not just a win for PropNex, but for Sabah. We thank the developers who have worked hand-in-hand with us to create attractive property designs and packages. With their support, our negotiators stay motivated and our purchasers enjoy greater value,' she said. Her business partner Stephon Chong added that PropNex's role extends beyond transactions. 'Our role goes beyond sales — it's about consistently adding value. Every year, we host international training sessions with up to 200 negotiators from Singapore, sharing advanced sales techniques that inspire our team and build millionaire careers,' he said. Beyond property sales, PropNex Sabah continues to prioritise education and community empowerment. Its monthly Property Wealth Formula Masterclass helps the public understand long-term value creation and sustainable wealth building through real estate. On the national stage, PropNex Malaysia emerged as the most-awarded real estate agency at NREA 2025, winning 18 company and individual awards across top categories including National Real Estate Firm of the Year, Residential Real Estate Firm of the Year, and Project Marketing Real Estate Firm of the Year. Seven PropNexians nationwide were also recognised under the Multi-Million Dollar Awards for achieving millionaire status in their real estate careers. Since 2021, PropNex has maintained an impressive track record at the awards, a reflection of its consistent growth, professional excellence, and commitment to raising industry standards. With this year's success, PropNex Sabah is poised to continue strengthening its presence from Kota Kinabalu to Semporna, positioning the state as a prime destination for both Malaysian and international property investors.
