'I am going to kill you': Mass. man faces charges in connection with woman strangled in hallway
A Duxbury man faces charges after police stopped him from strangling a woman to death in an apartment complex, Duxbury police said Friday. Brandon Wangnoon, 31, faces one count each of assault to murder, strangulation and suffocation, and breaking and entering a building at nighttime. At around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, officers were notified about a report of a man strangling a woman at an apartment hallway in the area of Mile Brook Road, Duxbury police said in a statement. When officers arrived, they at first did not see anyone in the hallway, police said. They spoke with a resident who confirmed Wangnoon was in the hallway with the woman and led officers to the woman's apartment. The woman told officers that Wangnoon was 'removed from his girlfriend's apartment,' and he entered a different apartment, police said. People living in that apartment saw Wangnoon and told him to leave, but he did not. Wangnoon became argumentative and grabbed one of the women in the apartment by the neck, took her out in the hallway and told her, 'I am going to kill you,' according to police. Other people intervened and separated the two, the statement read. Officers then searched the area, found Wangnoon and arrested him. Man pointed fake gun at woman at Mass. beach, made threats while driving away, police say
A man was arrested in connection with pointing a fake gun at a woman from inside a car at Duxbury Beach on Friday, Duxbury police said on Monday. Nicholas Haddad, 21, faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and threat to commit a crime. At around 9:30 p.m., a woman at the East lot of Duxbury Beach called the police to report a man in a black Nissan carrying a gun and threatening to shoot her, according to a department statement. Officers arrived and spoke with the woman, who gave a description of the man and his car, the statement read. Officers later found the man at a 'high-risk traffic stop.' The man, Haddad, was arrested without incident, police said. Haddad told the officers that the woman had approached him and asked him questions, the statement read. This annoyed him and he pointed one of the guns at her after she shined a flashlight in his face. He also told police that he had a 'BB gun' inside his car, which officers found was a replica Glock airsoft gun under his seat. 'The replica Glock was nearly indistinguishable from a real firearm and included Glock markings, a working slide and removable magazine,' police said. Officers searching the car also found a second replica Glock Airsoft gun. 'Incidents like this pose significant threats,' the end of the police statement read. 'BB and Airsoft guns that closely resemble a real firearm can escalate situations quickly. Had the airsoft gun been pointed at or near officers or another armed individual, the outcome could have been tragic.' Duxbury boys' tennis avenges 2024 finals loss to Westborough in capturing Division 2 state title
The seventh-seeded Rangers (15-6) did all they could, but ran into a powerhouse squad that left no doubt. 'We went down last year; we went down hard,' said Duxbury senior Tim Vargas. 'The comeback, and especially to win against Westborough, is really special.' Related : The Dragons and Rangers have now met in the tournament each of the last four years, including three straight state finals. Duxbury won 3-2 in 2023, and Westborough did the same in 2024. Advertisement The rubber match — pitting a Duxbury lineup with four seniors against a Westborough lineup with one senior and three freshmen — featured high-level tennis throughout, but wasn't as tight. 'Down the line, they all had some tremendous points, but they weren't able to string those together,' O'Neil said of his team. 'That's going to come with experience, age, wisdom, and time.' Bennett Stout, who will play at St. Lawrence, was a singles winner for Duxbury. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff Vargas, who will play at Colgate next year, cruised 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. St. Lawrence-bound senior Bennett Stout and senior scrapper Taylor Bettencourt both won 6-1, 6-0 to complete a dominant singles display. Advertisement Senior Peter Burnham and sophomore Willy Pierce ground out a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 win over over freshman Subash Pallothu and junior Jordan Hlawek at first doubles, and junior Nick Gallagher and sophomore Lucas Pratt did the same at second doubles, 6-4, 6-3. Duxbury's Timothy Vargas cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff The Dragons will almost certainly be in the mix for years to come, but it's the end of an era for one of the best senior classes in program history. 'They gave an example of wanting to be on the tennis court for hours,' said Duxbury coach John Bunar. 'They loved every minute of being on this surface. That's going to be passed down. They taught the younger guys how to be men.' Duxbury's William Pierce (left) and Peter Burnham compete in a Division 2 final doubles match at MIT. Alyx Rossi out-does herself, tossing perfect game and blasting two homers to keep Bedford softball dancing
The knock paid dividends, as Rossi finished what she started, striking out 16 Duxbury hitters Wednesday to cement her second perfect game of the season. The Boston College-bound southpaw, who recently eclipsed 900 career strikeouts, fueled Bedford to a 10-0 second-round triumph in the Division 2 tournament at Helen Gfroerer Field. Rossi also blasted two solo home runs, helping the third-seeded Buccaneers (19-1) move within three wins of their first state title since 1990. Rossi, who transferred back to Bedford from Austin Prep as a junior, is grateful for one final ride with her sister, Annie, and childhood friends. Advertisement Alyx Rossi poses with the game ball after pitching a perfect game to defeat Duxbury and adding two home runs. Trevor Hass It was a tough ending to a breakout season for the 19th-seeded Dragons (10-9), who will return the vast majority of their team next year after earning the program's first tournament victory since 2013 this spring. The Dragons made Rossi work, and flew around in the field, yet simply ran into a buzz saw earlier than they would have liked. 'It's difficult to put into words the work that they put in and the turnaround that they had at the speed and the pace that they had it,' said Duxbury coach Mike Barba. 'It's a great group of girls, off the field more importantly. I'm super proud of them. The sky's the limit going forward.' Advertisement But on this day, the Dragons had no answers for Rossi, who smacked the first pitch she saw over the right-field fence, then Becca Sobol extended the Buccaneers' margin to 3-0 through two innings. Kate Patterson provided a two-run double, Alice Cooprider and Mia Vitti ripped RBI singles, and Rossi added another homer for good measure. 'Yesterday, we ended practice a little early,' said Bedford coach Dennis Walsh. 'I said anyone who wants to stay, we'll do a little extra. She stayed for extra batting practice, and it paid off. I asked her if I could get a little bit of credit.' Rossi made it clear success belongs to the entire program, but it's clear the Buccaneers will continue to lean on her overpowering repertoire as they try to make history. Next up is a date with No. 6 Tewksbury on Sunday, in a rematch of last year's quarterfinal, won 2-0 by Bedford. The Buccaneers made the quarterfinals two years ago, the semifinals last year, and are determined to go the distance this spring. 'We set a goal at the start of the year,' Walsh said. 'Finals or bust.' Division 2 State Tewksbury 6, Reading 5 — With two outs and the tying runner on third base, Redmen pitcher Gabe Davis jammed the Rockets hitter into a pop-fly to center field as sixth-seeded Tewksbury (19-3) held on for a dramatic second-round win against No. 11 Reading (19-3). 'Keep cool, hit spots,' said Tewksbury coach Kirsten Dick, on the mentality against the final batter. 'If you miss your spots, we have a problem.' She praised Davis for staying cool, calm, and collected in a hectic final frame. 'Other pitchers could let that internalize and she doesn't let that get to her,' said Dick. Sydney Whalen drove in three runs (a two-run single and a sac fly), leading a balanced offensive attack in which four players recorded an RBI. For Dick, a first-year coach, the ride continues. 'It's been surreal,' she said. 'I didn't know what to expect coming in. I know that Tewksbury is a great program and has been for years.'
