Russia's national team and club sides were banned from European competitions after Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022, prompting numerous sanctions. FC Krasnodar, from the city in southern Russia, were founded in 2008 by the local retail magnate and billionaire Sergei Galitsky. They finished second in the Russian Premier League last year and reached the Russian Cup final in 2014 and 2023, losing both on penalties. Krasnodar beat Dinamo Moscow 3-0 on Saturday to finish one point ahead of Zenit St Petersburg. They have Russian international goalkeeper Stanislav Agkatsev and striker Alexander Chernikov in their squad, along with Armenian midfielder and team captain Eduard Spertsyan. Colombian striker Jhon Cordoba opened the scoring in the title-clinching game against Dinamo Moscow. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said last month that Russian clubs would be readmitted into the continent's competitions once the war in Ukraine is over. "Of course, it's regrettable. But bring on the Champions League, we will show you!," said Krasnodar fan Andrey Bragin outside the club's Ozon Arena stadium. The black-and-green team, also known as the Bulls, have experience of playing in Europe, finishing third in their Champions League group in 2020 after facing Chelsea, Sevilla and Rennes. Krasnodar manager Murad Musayev, 41, said he was overwhelmed with joy at winning the Russian title. "I hope we will return to the Champions League," he said. Alex Ovechkin's unexpected Moscow trip sparks speculation about NHL exit
Ovechkin's Moscow move fuels rumors of NHL farewell (Image via: Getty Images) When Alex Ovechkin speaks, the hockey world listens. But when he stays silent, it listens even harder. This time, it's not what Ovi said, but what he didn't and where he's heading that has everyone buzzing. At 39, with 21 NHL seasons under his belt and one year left on his five-year deal with the Washington Capitals, the Russian machine is once again the center of controversy. Is the Great 8 preparing for one final hurrah in D.C. or plotting a jaw-dropping return to his roots in Russia? Alex Ovechkin 's mysterious silence raises doubts about NHL future Reports have surfaced that Ovechkin will be flying to Moscow at the end of May. His agent, Gleb Chistyakov, stirred the pot further with a vague remark: 'There are certain plans… he will tell about them himself if he wants.' The ambiguity couldn't have been more deliberate. It wasn't a denial, it wasn't confirmation, it was bait. And the hockey world took it. Moscow isn't just a vacation spot for Ovi. It's home. It's where his hockey journey began with Dynamo Moscow, and where his legacy first sparked to life. His early days in the Russian Superleague weren't just a warm-up act, they were a warning shot to the NHL. Fast forward to today, and it wouldn't be out of character for him to close the circle where it all began. Adding fuel to the speculation, Dynamo Moscow's president Viktor Voronin isn't exactly playing coy. 'Of course, we are ready to accept him with pleasure,' he said. That's not diplomacy. That's a door wide open. All this comes just weeks after Ovechkin shut down retirement talk following a playoff exit against Carolina. Sure, he's under contract for one more year, but don't think for a second that makes his next move predictable. A broken leg didn't stop him from racking up 44 goals in 65 games, so don't expect logic to dictate his final chapter either. Also Read: 2025 NHL Conference Finals best bets: Eetu Luostarinen, Matt Duchene and top underrated playoff value picks to win big The NHL wants to believe Ovechkin's farewell tour is still on the books. But what if it never happens? What if he skips the sentimental send-off and bolts for Russia, rewriting his ending on his own terms? Whether this is misdirection or a calculated hint, Alex Ovechkin's next move isn't just a career decision. It could shake the very fabric of hockey history. The updated ranking, announced Friday, also includes Iker Casillas, Gordon Banks, Petr Cech, Dino Zoff, Sepp Maier, Ricardo Zamora, and Oliver Kahn. Yashin, who played his entire club career for Dynamo Moscow, remains the only goalkeeper to have won the Ballon d'Or – a prestigious annual award presented by the magazine France Football since 1956 to the best football player in the world. Rangers: Rare 1972 European shirt to be auctioned next month
The match-worn Tommy McLean shirt from the victory over Dynamo Moscow is expected to fetch between £15,000 and £20,000 at the Graham Budd Auctions on May 21. The description on the Graham Budd website reads: "Tommy McLean rare blue No.7 Rangers v. Dynamo Moscow match worn European Cup Winners Cup Final long-sleeved shirt, 1972, Umbro, M with crew-neck collar and embroidered badge inscribed EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS CUP FINAL 1972." The jersey is one of several pieces of Scottish football memorabilia that will feature at the auction. Other items will include kits from Rangers, Celtic, Scotland, and Dundee. The 1972 victory was Rangers' first European Cup Winners Cup final win after defeats in 1961 and 1967. The "Barca Bears" defeated Rennes, Sporting Club, Torino, and Bayern Munich to reach the final. Then, in front of 35,000 spectators at the Nou Camp on May 24, 1972, Rangers defeated Dynamo Moscow 3-2 with goals from Willie Johnstone and Colin Stein. The Rangers team of 1972 subsequently became known as the "Barca Bears" and are revered in the club's history for their European success. The shirt is therefore considered a significant piece of memorabilia for collectors and Rangers fans alike. The auction will take place on Wednesday, May 21, giving fans a chance to own a piece of history.
