Here is how to keep your home cool this summer

Adele Cardani, The Independent With record-breaking temperatures becoming a seasonal norm, the challenge of keeping your home cool is no longer reserved for far-flung climates. In the UK — where traditional homes are built to trap heat, not release it — rising temperatures can turn living spaces into stifling ovens. And with air conditioning still a rarity (and a costly one at that), finding effective, affordable alternatives has never been more important We spoke to the experts to uncover smart, sustainable ways to keep your home cool without driving up energy costs. From airflow tricks and thermal-savvy window treatments to breathable organic bedding and strategic greenery, their advice offers practical solutions for staying comfortable through the hottest days. Invest in a fan that works smarter, not harder: It might seem obvious, but one of the simplest ways to stay cool is also one of the most overlooked: a decent fan. Not all fans are created equal, and the cheap, noisy models often end up doing little more than pushing hot air around. Instead, consider investing in a powerful, energy-efficient option that delivers real results — without draining your wallet. Take the Dyson Cool CF1, for instance. Its brushless DC motor generates a smooth, even breeze and draws only 30 watts of power at maximum fan speed for energy-efficient cooling. It also has a customisable sleep timer, ensuring no wasted energy. Target where the sun hits hardest: One effective way to reduce the sun's impact on your indoor temperatures is by applying solar control film to your windows. "Although there's an initial investment, it can make a noticeable difference in rooms with south-facing windows or those that tend to overheat," explains Liam Spencer, owner of window specialist Northallerton Glass. "You don't need to cover every window - just focus on the ones that receive the most sunlight for maximum benefit." Spencer also recommends embracing the power of a night purge by opening your windows after sunset to invite in cool, refreshing air. Then, as dawn breaks, close and shade your windows to trap that overnight chill inside, creating a comfortable refuge from the rising heat. Wool? For summer? Groundbreaking. Wool might traditionally be associated with warmth, but it's also a (surprisingly) smart choice for staying cool in summer. Lisa Conway from carpet specialists Brintons explains: "Wool is always an excellent choice due to its natural insulating properties, and one lesser-known advantage is its cooling ability. Helping to regulate both temperature and humidity, wool carpets and rugs can prevent too much heat from coming through the floor - ultimately contributing to a more comfortable, energy-efficient home." Comfort and coolness in every thread: Other natural fibres offer similar benefits. When it comes to bedding, linen and cotton do more than help regulate temperature — they can actually improve sleep quality. Their natural breathability helps prevent overheating at night, while their soft, moisture-wicking fibres keep you dry and comfortable. Linen, in particular, grows softer with every wash, offering a relaxed, lived-in feel that encourages deeper, more restful sleep. Look to Piglet in Bed for high-quality bedding crafted from sustainably sourced natural fibres, available in a range of playful patterns and soothing tones that bring both comfort and character to your bedroom. Shade and serenity in every leaf: Outdoors, consider planting fast-growing climbers like honeysuckle, clematis, or grapevine on trellises positioned near south-facing walls or windows. These living shade screens not only block harsh sunlight but also create a cooling microclimate around your home. If you shower in the morning, try turning off your boiler during the day, it just adds unnecessary heat Marta de Sousa, interior designerIndoors, introduce heat-fighting houseplants that double as décor — areca palms and peace lilies act as natural humidifiers, whilst aloe vera and snake plants absorb heat and release oxygen at night, making them ideal for bedrooms and living spaces. Tackle hidden heat makers: Remember, it's not just the sun making your home warmer — many everyday appliances quietly add to the heat. "Lights, ovens, computers, TVs, and electronics all give off heat," says property developer and interior designer Marta de Sousa. "Better to cook outdoors or have a barbecue if you can and avoid using the tumble dryer during the day." Even lighting choices matter: incandescent bulbs give off heat along with a cosy glow. Swapping them for energy-efficient LEDs or keeping lights off during the day can make a noticeable difference. Your boiler can also add unexpected warmth. "If you shower in the morning, try turning off your boiler during the day," de Sousa suggests. "There's no need to keep hot water stored when you're not using it - it just adds unnecessary heat." Heating water overnight and switching the boiler off during the day helps keep your home cooler and cuts energy bills. Electronics left on standby also emit residual heat, so unplug anything you're not using. Small changes like these can go a long way to keeping your home comfortable through summer.

'I tried Dyson's cheapest fan - it's been a lifeline in the heat'

The Dyson Cool CF1 is the brand's most affordable bladeless fan - but is it worth the £249.99 price tag? Here's our honest review after testing it in a heatwave As someone who really quite struggles in the heat (I'm a redhead), a good fan is an absolute lifesaver. And while I've tried and tested plenty of different makes and models over the years, the Dyson Cool CF1 is certainly the most sophisticated of them all. I must admit, I'm no tech whizz, but I'm not a technophobe either, and do appreciate a good, functional gadget - see also: my Swan Alexa-compatible voice activated kettle. I'm also quite a fan of Dyson devices, and while the jury is still out on their cordless Corrale straighteners, I could write page after page about how much I adore the Supersonic hairdryer, or how their V8 vacuum is a godsend for pet owners. Perhaps that's why I was drawn to the new Dyson Cool CF1 i n the first place. Dyson's latest reimagining of its iconic bladeless fan is its smallest and most affordable cooling device. But is it worth it? The Dyson Cool CF1 costs £249.99, which is definitely no small investment. Most fans I've picked up in the past have cost £50 or less and very much deliver on their promises, so what makes this one so special? Over a decade ago, Dyson rewrote the fan rulebook by banishing blades altogether. Now, with the CF1, they've taken that legacy and made it smarter, safer, and more efficient. The first thing my parents and I said when we put the fan together (which was insanely easy to do) was how safe it was, not just for our two dogs, but for my very curious 18-month-old nephew, too. We're at no risk of tails or tiny fingers getting caught by sharp blades with the CF1. Dyson Cool CF1 £249.99 Dyson Buy here Product Description Instead of using blades, the Dyson has an energy-efficient DC motor that draws air in, which then exits the loop amplifier as a high-velocity jet. As the jet of air leaves the front of the loop amplifier, more air is drawn from the surroundings, amplifying the initial airflow by up to 13 times. As such, it's powerful, delivering up to 370 litres of airflow per second, but without that choppy, wind-tunnel feel you get from traditional bladed fans. It really has been a lifeline in the recent heatwave. Another bladeless benefit has to be the cleaning. Many alternative fans often find themselves caked in dust and difficult to clean, but we don't get that issue with the Dyson fan. The CF1 has a simple loop amplifier that you just wipe down, with no need for screwdrivers or dismantling, much to my dad's delight. Another standout that sets the Dyson apart from its competitors is its undeniably chic design - as to be expected from the tech giant, whose appliances not only function exceptionally but look good doing it too. It has a short stand and wide round circular 'head', which is ideal for placing on the floor or on bedside tables. However, for those with limited space, a tall, slim tower fan might be better suited. Dyson does have their own Cool Tower Fan for £349.99, however, for something more affordable, Dunelm offers the Vybra Dual Height Oscillator Cooling Fan for £69. Shoppers say it is 'powerful for the price' and praise the remote control that comes with it. Alternatively, at Amazon, the Dreo 28dB Silent Tower Fan comes in at £74.99. With a 25ft/s air speed, the tower fan blows cold air, providing refreshing breezes to chill your space quickly, making it perfect for hot summer days or stuffy indoor areas. Back to the Dyson design though, I'm a big fan of the fact it can be controlled remotely, meaning no need to get on my hands and knees in the heat to faff with settings. The LCD screen displays the speed of the fan, of which there are 10 settings, with options to oscillate between 15 and 70°. There's also a nighttime mode ideal for bedtime, which sets the fan to speed 4, which is the ultimate combination of whisper quiet while still being effective in its cooling abilities. If I were being picky, one of the only negatives would be that some of the higher speeds are a little noisy, requiring turning up the TV, but it's no louder than other fans I've used. In all, it's very user-friendly, efficient, super lightweight and, let's be honest, feels pretty satisfying to use, even for someone who usually doesn't care about tech. On the Dyson website, it's already been racking up a number of five-star reviews. One said: 'This fan arrived last week for me and with this continuous hot spell I am appreciating it every afternoon as the sun hits my home office. It's quiet enough, even on high power, to not affect calls or sleep if I move it to the bedroom at night.' 'I love the new CF1,' another declared, 'Its powerful airflow is just what I needed in my apartment that gets very hot in summer months. It's portable and very easy to control using the remote, meaning I don't have to get out of bed to turn it off if it's positioned across the room. The design is safe and even my furry dog loves it. It's so quiet also, the best night's sleep I've had in ages.' One shopper at John Lewis said it 'doesn't actually cool' but still left a five-star rating adding: 'Provides good airflow and is comparatively quiet.' And I have to say, if the room is already stifling, the fan can only really circulate the air already in the room. Dyson said: 'Designed to work seamlessly with air conditioning, the Dyson Cool CF1 enhances airflow to create a more comfortable and evenly cooled environment. Whether used alone or as a complement to existing cooling systems, its innovative engineering ensures customisable comfort and improved circulation.' Another shopper added: 'This is a wonderfully designed fan. If you have young children or pets around or are noise or dust-sensitive, this is the fan for you, or even if you don't. It's very quiet, easy to control. I really like the remote. It makes it handy to control it from bed. It stores by magnet to the top too. You can also adjust the fan's angle. Most importantly it makes the room cooler.' Another fan I rate is the Honeywell TurboForce Power Fan. Usually £32.49, it's currently £28.99 on Amazon, saving 11% off the RRP ahead of Amazon Prime Day next week (July 8-11). It's not its lowest-ever price, having previously been available for as little as £18.49, but for under £30, it's still worth every penny, in my opinion. However, if you're looking for a more premium cooling gadget, the Shark FlexBreeze TableMate Indoor to Outdoor High-Velocity Tabletop Fan currently has £50 off, down to £99.99 instead of £149.99. As for the Dyson, while I'm seriously impressed with the functionality and features, it is a very expensive fan. If you just want a blast of air on a tight budget, there are far cheaper options, but if you're after an appliance that slots seamlessly into a room, is powerful, quiet, and family-friendly, the Dyson Cool CF1 ticks all of those boxes.

I tried the upgraded Dyson Cool bladeless fan — and it's the best looking fan I've ever seen

With warmer temperatures, many of us are either preparing the air conditioner for a hot summer, or in my case, bringing the cooling fans out of winter retirement. And as someone who is obsessed with interior style and decor, I've always struggled to find the perfect cooling fan to suit my home. While I'm all for functionality and the power to instantly keep me cool and comfortable on a sweltering day, it has to look the part too. Dyson has always been at the forefront of innovative vacuum cleaners, and their air care range is no different. Since the launch of Dyson Cool, the world's first bladeless fan in 2009, it quickly became an iconic game-changer. A fan with no blades? Who would have thought? So when I discovered the brand had finally given its original, bladeless fan a fresh, new upgrade, I couldn't wait to get my hands on one. Cue the redesigned, Dyson Cool CF1 bladeless desk fan that promises a stylish new look and more cooler (no pun!) features to play with. Not only does it now have 10 fan speeds to choose from, it comes with extended oscillation settings, sleep timer, and the additional Night mode, which automatically dims the displays and adjusts fan speed for cooling that won't disturb your slumber. At a retail value of £249.99 (about $338), it does come at a steep price compared to other cooling fans on the market. Plus, it doesn't come with any app connectivity, or smart features. With all that said, I couldn't wait to try out the new Dyson Cool CF1, and see if it was worth the wait (and price tag!). Here are my first impressions. Sadly, the Dyson Cool CF1 is only available in the UK currently, available for £249.99 at Dyson. But it's set to launch in the US in early 2026. Watch this space for more updates. The Dyson Cool CF1 is the brand's latest innovation in bladeless fan technology. The upgrade is a redesigned circular look with customizable settings, added sleep mode, improved oscillation and a digital LCD screen. If you're hoping to keep cool this summer, this could be the fan you've been looking for. Setting up the Dyson Cool CF1 was literally a breeze, and easy to assemble. You simply attach the bladeless top to the base unit with a quick twist and lock movement (as noted on the base). It has three buttons — On/Off, Sleep Mode and Oscillate, and it also comes with a handy remote control. It's also incredibly lightweight and compact. I could easily lift and carry it around the room with one hand. Hands down, the Dyson Cool CF1 is the most eye-catching, sleek fan I've ever seen, and I loved its circular design — in contrast to Dyson's, trademark capsule-like shape. Plus, not only does the bladeless design make it easier to clean, eliminating dust circulating in the air, but is a safer option for small children and pets (no chances of putting tiny fingers into an oscillating fan!). And though it's originally intended for tabletops or desks, the Dyson Cool CF1 didn't look out of place on my living room floor. In fact, it was far less obtrusive than my trusted Dyson Pure Cool TP01 Air Purifier and Fan, adding a more contemporary appeal. Aesthetics aside, the real question is, does the Dyson Cool CF1 perform just as well as it looks? First, I experimented with all 10 settings to find a comfortable temperature — finally settling between the 5-7 mark, which was sufficient. Despite its tiny stature, I was impressed at how the Dyson Cool CF1 got to work at instantly cooling down my living room within just seconds. In fact, the minute I turned the fan off, I could feel the temperature difference immediately. And if you're experiencing a heatwave, the highest setting will give the air a powerful cooling boost, to keep you comfortable in no time. Another thing I was most impressed with was its 'whisper quiet' operation, which is always a bonus. I barely noticed when it was running, and I could easily have a conversation or relax in peace. In fact, the only time you heard a slight hum was when the setting was cranked up to 10, and the power kicked in. However, you probably won't even need to use this setting often — unless your AC suddenly stops blowing cold air. The Sleep Mode and Timer functions are also handy, as the Dyson Cool CF1 can adjust its fan speeds and dim the light to suit your environment. Perhaps the only downside to note was the remote control not being very responsive when I wanted to change fan speeds. This meant I often had to move to get closer to the unit for it to work. Still, this isn't a real deal breaker in the grand scheme of things, especially if you intend to place it on a table or desk. Granted, you could probably buy a decent cooling fan for half the price — but that wouldn't necessarily get the job done well. The Dyson Cool CF1 desk fan may be miniature, but it certainly packs in the power to instantly cool down a room. What's more, it's super quiet, and won't disturb your slumber at night. It's lightweight size makes it convenient to carry around, or even travel with if you're planning any 'staycations'. It may not come with any app connectivity or fancy mod-cons, but if you simply want a powerful fan that has the best-looking, design on the market, I would invest in the Dyson Cool CF1 for sure.

One of Dyson's most popular devices just got a huge upgrade – but it's not a vacuum

When you think of Dyson, your brain probably jumps straight to sleek, pricey dirt-suckers. But somewhere along the way, Dyson also became a posh fan brand. You'll no doubt recognise the original bladeless Dyson Cool fan. But did you know it's now 16 years old? After years of letting its fan line coast while it flirted with air purifiers, straighteners and air-purifying headphones (yeah, remember those?), Dyson's gone back to its roots. The new CF1 fan is a big upgrade to Dyson's bladeless fan and it looks great. The Dyson Cool CF1 is a full-on refresh of its original bladeless fan. It has the same general aesthetic, but it's smarter and quieter. The CF1 keeps the iconic circle-meets-pedestal look, but now sports a new LCD screen on its base that lets you know what it's doing without needing to decipher any beeps or random light flashes. Air Multiplier tech is still doing the heavy lifting here, flinging out 370 litres of air per second in a stream that actually feels smooth. Other Dyson fans I've used live up to this, unlike choppy budget fans that seem to alternate between 'gentle breeze' and 'tornado simulator'. So I expect this new fan will blow me away (pun very much intended). With ten fan speeds and three different oscillation ranges, it's got plenty of range to keep you cool without blasting papers off your desk. Dyson's new Night mode dials things down to a whispery 29dB at night so you can get some shut-eye. It also dims the screen so you're not trying to nod off next to a digital lighthouse. Is it a revolution? No. But it's a long-overdue upgrade you'd expect from a brand that's obsessed with making airflow seem sexy. Note that you don't get purification, heating, or humidifying here – the CF1 just cools. The Dyson Cool CF1 is available now for £250 from Dyson. There's no US pricing or availability just yet.

Dyson redesigned its iconic bladeless fan, and it's cooler than ever

Dyson invented the bladeless fan way back in 2008 – and thank goodness it did, because it quickly became the most popular way to keep cool. Quiet and sleek? A perfect combination. But, that doesn't mean Dyson stopped innovating. The household appliance brand is known for dropping new products, recently unveiling the 'world's slimmest vacuum' and its very own Dyson cleaning solution. Now, it's time for a whole new bladeless fan. Introducing the Dyson Cool CF1 – an upgraded redesign on the original that started it all, with new features, personalised customisation, night-time cooling, and an all-new LCD screen display. It's only arrived in the UK for now, available for £249.99 at Dyson, but it's set to launch in the US in early 2026. The Dyson Cool CF1 is the brand's latest innovation in bladeless fan technology. The upgrade is a redesigned circular look with customisable settings, added sleep mode, improved oscillation and a digital LCD screen. If you're hoping to keep cool this summer, this could be the fan you've been looking for. Unlike the Dyson Cool Tower Fan AM07, the OG bladeless, the Cool CF1 looks a lot different. Instead of the long pill-shaped body, there's a circular design and honestly, I love it. There's something about a circle that feels a lot closer to representing flow and what better product than a fan solely responsible for air flow. Plus, it fits in nicely with other products in Dyson's modern line-up, such as the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. With a sleek, modern design, I could easily imagine it on display in my bedroom. And that would be a great place for it, if you take a look at the Cool CF1's spec sheet in more detail. It comes with an added sleep mode which automatically adjusts the fan speed and dims the display with "whisper quiet comfort" at 29dB and personalised cooling for better sleep. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. And on this digital LED display, you can select your chosen mode and airflow setting for optimal cooling. If that wasn't enough, it's also super energy-efficient, operating at 30 watts max. There's many great reasons to buy a bladeless fan. For me, the biggest sign was when pretty much everyone I knew started buying them, too. When there's no blades, you get to enjoy a smooth, uninterrupted flow. It's also a lot safer, given there's no fast-spinning blades that the tiniest members of your household may decide to put their fingers near. Or, a cumbersome case holds the blades inside. And that leads me to one of the most alluring perks when it comes to bladeless fans – and that's how easy they are to clean. If there's no tiny crevices and awkward grilles to remove, then there's nowhere for dust to hide. Dyson may have been the first to release a bladeless fan, but a lot of competitors have followed in their footsteps, launching their own rival models since. Take the Shark TurboBlade, for example, sporting a unique design and making its own waves in air cooling. While I'm excited to see the Cool CF1 enter the air cooling space, I'll reserve my full judgement for after the team get their hands on it for a full review in the next few months. Watch this space.
