'I tried Dyson's cheapest fan - it's been a lifeline in the heat'
As someone who really quite struggles in the heat (I'm a redhead), a good fan is an absolute lifesaver. And while I've tried and tested plenty of different makes and models over the years, the Dyson Cool CF1 is certainly the most sophisticated of them all.
I must admit, I'm no tech whizz, but I'm not a technophobe either, and do appreciate a good, functional gadget - see also: my Swan Alexa-compatible voice activated kettle. I'm also quite a fan of Dyson devices, and while the jury is still out on their cordless Corrale straighteners, I could write page after page about how much I adore the Supersonic hairdryer, or how their V8 vacuum is a godsend for pet owners.
Perhaps that's why I was drawn to the new Dyson Cool CF1 i n the first place. Dyson's latest reimagining of its iconic bladeless fan is its smallest and most affordable cooling device. But is it worth it?
The Dyson Cool CF1 costs £249.99, which is definitely no small investment. Most fans I've picked up in the past have cost £50 or less and very much deliver on their promises, so what makes this one so special?
Over a decade ago, Dyson rewrote the fan rulebook by banishing blades altogether. Now, with the CF1, they've taken that legacy and made it smarter, safer, and more efficient. The first thing my parents and I said when we put the fan together (which was insanely easy to do) was how safe it was, not just for our two dogs, but for my very curious 18-month-old nephew, too. We're at no risk of tails or tiny fingers getting caught by sharp blades with the CF1.

Instead of using blades, the Dyson has an energy-efficient DC motor that draws air in, which then exits the loop amplifier as a high-velocity jet. As the jet of air leaves the front of the loop amplifier, more air is drawn from the surroundings, amplifying the initial airflow by up to 13 times. As such, it's powerful, delivering up to 370 litres of airflow per second, but without that choppy, wind-tunnel feel you get from traditional bladed fans. It really has been a lifeline in the recent heatwave.
Another bladeless benefit has to be the cleaning. Many alternative fans often find themselves caked in dust and difficult to clean, but we don't get that issue with the Dyson fan. The CF1 has a simple loop amplifier that you just wipe down, with no need for screwdrivers or dismantling, much to my dad's delight.
Another standout that sets the Dyson apart from its competitors is its undeniably chic design - as to be expected from the tech giant, whose appliances not only function exceptionally but look good doing it too. It has a short stand and wide round circular 'head', which is ideal for placing on the floor or on bedside tables.
However, for those with limited space, a tall, slim tower fan might be better suited. Dyson does have their own Cool Tower Fan for £349.99, however, for something more affordable, Dunelm offers the Vybra Dual Height Oscillator Cooling Fan for £69. Shoppers say it is 'powerful for the price' and praise the remote control that comes with it.
Alternatively, at Amazon, the Dreo 28dB Silent Tower Fan comes in at £74.99. With a 25ft/s air speed, the tower fan blows cold air, providing refreshing breezes to chill your space quickly, making it perfect for hot summer days or stuffy indoor areas.
Back to the Dyson design though, I'm a big fan of the fact it can be controlled remotely, meaning no need to get on my hands and knees in the heat to faff with settings. The LCD screen displays the speed of the fan, of which there are 10 settings, with options to oscillate between 15 and 70°.
There's also a nighttime mode ideal for bedtime, which sets the fan to speed 4, which is the ultimate combination of whisper quiet while still being effective in its cooling abilities. If I were being picky, one of the only negatives would be that some of the higher speeds are a little noisy, requiring turning up the TV, but it's no louder than other fans I've used.
In all, it's very user-friendly, efficient, super lightweight and, let's be honest, feels pretty satisfying to use, even for someone who usually doesn't care about tech. On the Dyson website, it's already been racking up a number of five-star reviews.
One said: 'This fan arrived last week for me and with this continuous hot spell I am appreciating it every afternoon as the sun hits my home office. It's quiet enough, even on high power, to not affect calls or sleep if I move it to the bedroom at night.'
'I love the new CF1,' another declared, 'Its powerful airflow is just what I needed in my apartment that gets very hot in summer months. It's portable and very easy to control using the remote, meaning I don't have to get out of bed to turn it off if it's positioned across the room. The design is safe and even my furry dog loves it. It's so quiet also, the best night's sleep I've had in ages.'
One shopper at John Lewis said it 'doesn't actually cool' but still left a five-star rating adding: 'Provides good airflow and is comparatively quiet.' And I have to say, if the room is already stifling, the fan can only really circulate the air already in the room.
Dyson said: 'Designed to work seamlessly with air conditioning, the Dyson Cool CF1 enhances airflow to create a more comfortable and evenly cooled environment. Whether used alone or as a complement to existing cooling systems, its innovative engineering ensures customisable comfort and improved circulation.'
Another shopper added: 'This is a wonderfully designed fan. If you have young children or pets around or are noise or dust-sensitive, this is the fan for you, or even if you don't. It's very quiet, easy to control. I really like the remote. It makes it handy to control it from bed. It stores by magnet to the top too. You can also adjust the fan's angle. Most importantly it makes the room cooler.'
Another fan I rate is the Honeywell TurboForce Power Fan. Usually £32.49, it's currently £28.99 on Amazon, saving 11% off the RRP ahead of Amazon Prime Day next week (July 8-11). It's not its lowest-ever price, having previously been available for as little as £18.49, but for under £30, it's still worth every penny, in my opinion.
However, if you're looking for a more premium cooling gadget, the Shark FlexBreeze TableMate Indoor to Outdoor High-Velocity Tabletop Fan currently has £50 off, down to £99.99 instead of £149.99.
As for the Dyson, while I'm seriously impressed with the functionality and features, it is a very expensive fan. If you just want a blast of air on a tight budget, there are far cheaper options, but if you're after an appliance that slots seamlessly into a room, is powerful, quiet, and family-friendly, the Dyson Cool CF1 ticks all of those boxes.

There are quite a few on the market now, and they bring various benefits over conventional fans because of some clever physics that goes on, thanks to how they're designed. While a regular fan pushes air in one direction, giving you a direct breeze, an air circulator can move air around the whole room. This means it doesn't just blow at you — it creates a continuous airflow loop that mixes warm and cool air together, evening out the temperature and helping your space feel more comfortable overall. Air circulators work very differently to conventional fans | SwitchBot Air circulators can also help in warm weather, boosting the efficiency of a heating source by helping it to fill the room more effectively. One of the latest companies to dip their toes into the air circulator space is SwitchBot, a tech firm that has become known for taking existing technology and making it smarter. But, on the face of it at least, its latest Circulator Fan doesn't look all that smart. It's a nice design with a minimalist feel about the horseshoe-shaped base stand, but it still has the trademark bulbous fan surround, and a compact digital display with an array of touch-sensitive buttons, and a basic remote control is included. You can choose a cordless battery-powered version or an ever-so-slightly cheaper mains powered version - but the cordless one is obviously more versatile. Because it's powered by a rechargeable battery, it's ideal for outdoor use | SwitchBot The smart features are there, though, and they're largely hidden away in the SwitchBot app. It gives you access to the full suite of controls, and lets you alter the angle of horizontal and vertical oscillation remotely, and lets you set up timers. The truly smart features happen when you link it to a SwitchBot hub, though, because this uses the Matter network to integrate it with other smart devices in your house, and it unlocks access to smart speakers, or smart thermometers. Bellowing an order at Alexa might not seem all that futuristic nowadays, but having your fan turn on when a smart thermometer notices the temperature has just reached an uncomfortable level is very handy indeed. It goes some way to justifying the fan's entry price. The cordless version is around £129.99 - deals come and go, but that's about the ballpark. It's actually pretty pricey as air circulators go, but there really aren't any out there that are much cleverer than this one. It's super quiet on its lowest setting, and there's a trick sleep mode, too | SwitchBot A big benefit of air circulators is you don't need to run them at high speeds, even on very hot days. This brings two bonuses - firstly, it can be really quiet. Even on its top speed setting, SwitchBot's air circulator is very unobtrusive. At its lowest speed setting, it's practically inaudible. The other bonus is a lengthy battery life. SwitchBot claims it will run for up to 12 hours in its low setting, and that's about right. It's much shorter with the fan speed turned up a few notches, but still more than enough to polish off a picnic or watch an outdoor movie. There are other clever touches, too. It's the first fan, let alone air circulator, I've tested that has a smart sleep mode. This starts the fan off on a high setting to cool you down, then gradually weakens the speed as you nod off. There's also a night-light, which can be set up and controlled remotely. Meaco's new portable Sefte is is an obvious rival - but while it's cheaper, it's nowhere near as smart | Meaco It could be argued that, without linking the air circulator up to some sort of smart eco-system, it's just a posh fan with a fairly high price tag. And it's important to add that there are other decent battery air circulators out there, like Meaco's excellent Sefte, which is far cheaper at £79.99. But this is for people who like their smart features. It's incredibly effective at cooling you down, but when you consider all the automations you can unlock by linking it up to other smart devices, it comes into its own. I'm very much one of those people, so personally I'm a big fan.

The Ring rival promises to scan for intruders and even follow them to protect your property. Most home cameras come with a single snapper that gives a general view of your front garden. But this new model has two cameras that allow for a special kind of monitoring. "One stays fixed on your priority view while the other pans and tilts to track motion," Wyze explains. The idea is that the second camera can move to follow motion, eliminating any potential blindspots. It serves up video in 2K HD resolution, and there's colour night vision too. Wyze says this "unveils stunning details in low-light conditions that even the human eye can't catch". And if you want, you can set the camera up to trigger two motion-activated spotlights when motion is detected. These LED lights can even be accompanied by an automatic voice alert if you like. There's even the option to activate a loud 100dB siren that can scare off an intruder. And it can also tilt up and down at 180 degrees, so it shouldn't miss anything in line of sight from your door. You can even set up a virtual "patrol route" with four waypoints for panning. So it almost works like a security guard. Skechers launch new kids' shoes with hidden AirTag pocket
The Go Run Elevate range from Skechers has a hidden AirTag-compatible compartment under the inner sole, allowing parents to keep an eye on their little ones' whereabouts Renowned for their comfort and support, Skechers are a favourite trainer brand, even providing relief for those with back pain and mobility issues. Now, the brand has taken it a step further by designing a children's shoe with a hidden compartment specifically for an Apple AirTag. This allows parents to literally track their child's every move, marking a significant departure from their usual slip-on trainers or shoes with 'cloud-like' inserts. Priced from £45, the Go Run Elevate range features a concealed AirTag-compatible pocket beneath the inner sole. The hidden feature is not immediately apparent when looking at the shoe, which may reassure parents that they can monitor their child's location, whether at nursery, in the park, or during a busy day out. Starting at £45 for toddler sizes, the range goes up to £55 for boys' and girls' sizes, reports Nottinghamshire Live. However, it's important to note that the AirTag - the key product upon which Skechers have based their design - is not included in the price. These must be purchased separately and start at £28 per AirTag on Amazon. Alternatively, Currys sell a pack of four AirTags for £92. This may appear like a substantial expense initially, but it proves more economical - working out at £23 per AirTag. Currently, no other manufacturer has launched a footwear range specifically engineered to accommodate a Bluetooth tracker. Nevertheless, it's become a trending topic on social media, with parents fitting AirTags to the laces of children's Jordan 1's, for instance, now priced at £54.99 from the Nike Store. When measured against the aforementioned options, the Skechers appear to offer a more comfortable method of incorporating the AirTag into the shoe, whilst also providing a cosy design. The Go Run Elevate collection boasts adaptive materials and includes an instep strap. Being a fresh design, feedback remains sparse, though the overall reaction from customers has been favourable. The handful of reviews published thus far emphasise the comfort and functionality. One five-star assessment states: "The idea of this product is awesome, and Skechers are comfortable and offer good quality for a great price. The fact that someone gave this product a one-star rating based on a suggestion to make these for adults didn't sit well with me." Another buyer also remarked that their child found the shoe 'so comfortable to wear'. Whilst the majority of parents who have purchased these for their youngsters support the concept, not everyone does, and it's proving to spark controversy. with the design, as one individual posted: "This is weird since Apple doesn't recommend using AirTags to track one's kids."
