Corporate South Africa unites to pack 650 000 meals on Mandela Day

In a remarkable display of compassion and corporate citizenship, over 3 500 volunteers from across South Africa's business sector came together at the Sandton Convention Centre on Mandela Day to pack 650 000 meals. This large-scale initiative, led by non-profit organisation Rise Against Hunger Africa, will directly support over 78 500 children in Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres across the country. Read more: From volunteer to CEO, Kim expands smiles The annual Mandela Day event is the largest of its kind for Rise Against Hunger Africa, engaging employees from major financial institutions such as ABSA, Standard Bank, and Nedbank, as well as numerous insurance and other corporate entities. Rise Against Hunger Africa CEO Brian Nell said, 'Our goal today is to pack 650 000 meals, that's enough to provide five nutritious meals a week to 2 860 children for an entire year while they attend their ECDs. 'It's not just about feeding kids, it's about helping them learn, grow, and thrive during their most critical developmental years.' While Mandela Day sees a large collective effort, Rise Against Hunger Africa operates year-round, supplying monthly food deliveries to over 720 ECD centres nationwide. The meals are specially designed to meet the nutritional needs of young children and are delivered consistently by the non-profit's distribution team and partner organisations. 'We've built a system where meals are delivered regularly, and every meal has a one-year shelf life. Our impact isn't just measured in meals, but in better educational outcomes and healthier, happier children.' Throughout the year, Rise Against Hunger hosts smaller meal-packing events at various company premises, creating hands-on volunteering opportunities for employees and integrating Corporate Social Investment (CSI) into daily business culture. 'Corporate South Africa rocks – without them, we wouldn't be able to do what we do. These companies aren't just donating for tax breaks anymore. They're involved, they're present, and they're changing lives.' Among the key partners in this year's Mandela Day activation was ABSA Group. Their team contributed significantly across four regions: Gauteng, KZN, Western Cape, and Free State, packing over 71 000 meals. Manager Colleague Volunteering and Social Impact Response at ABSA, Zintle Zhazia, said, 'This initiative aligns with our strategy of being a force for good in the communities we serve. 'Food security is a major issue in our country, and we believe that by bringing our colleagues along to participate and give back, we are actively contributing to long-term social impact.' Zhazia emphasised that Rise Against Hunger's collaborative model is key to lasting impact. 'By working with multiple corporations, Rise Against Hunger creates a shared value approach that strengthens communities and maximises support for young children in ECDs.' Muck, flooded depots cripple cargo at Mundra Port

Ahmedabad: Amid ongoing monsoon rains and a recent spell of heavy downpours in the Kutch-Saurashtra region, the empty container depots (ECDs) at Mundra Port descended into disarray, severely impacting cargo movement and damaging shipments. Transporters and customs brokers report that waterlogging and accumulated muck rendered the ECD zones virtually inaccessible, compounding operational bottlenecks at India's largest private port. The Kutch region received 58% of the season's total rainfall. "Several areas within the ECDs are submerged, leading to both container delays and direct cargo damage. Basic drainage infrastructure is lacking at many depots, and repeated representations to both operators and port authorities yielded no results so far. The ECDs are not even laid with proper roads or paver blocks to make access easy," said Manoj Kotak, secretary of the Mundra Customs Brokers' Association (MCBA). According to freight forwarders, loaded containers awaiting repositioning or customs clearance are stuck in flooded yards. "Transporters are unable to access delivery points, resulting in logistical standstills and additional financial burden for both exporters and importers. Broken roads and bridges already made turnaround times longer and diesel costs higher," said Mukesh Dave, executive president of the Akhil Gujarat Truck Transporters' Association (AGTTA). By a rough distribution over 365 days of the year, roughly 6.02 lakh MT cargo is handled on a daily basis at the port. Sources in the transport fraternity allege that the present situation also led to disputes over damage claims, as soaked and mud-laden containers await inspection and repair. Empty containers awaiting dispatch for export stuffing are reportedly lying idle in waterlogged yards, adding to exporters' woes. The logistics sivision of the Union ministry of commerce also proposed guidelines to maintain proper infrastructure at ECDs. "ECDs are a critical part of the supply chain. Measures for standardisation of infrastructure and facilities available at the ECDs need to be taken. Transparency, registration, and minimum infrastructure norms must be enforced without delay," stated the guidelines. Despite multiple written complaints, depot operators have yet to initiate any significant remediation, brokers said.

Crèches are now ready to fight fires

Crèches are now ready to fight fires Tshwane has delivered fire safety equipment, including serviced and upgraded extinguishers, hose reels and hydrants, to nine early childhood development centres in regions 3 and 6. This comes after a routine inspection by the DA caucus's Section 79 Community and Social Development oversight committee, chaired by Phuti Kwenaite. 'Recently, we pointed out there are maintenance elements that have been neglected in Tshwane's ECDs.' She said the fire extinguisher problem was supposed to be addressed two years ago. Kwenaite highlighted the significant risk posed when fire extinguishers are neither present nor functional. 'It is a big risk for the extinguishers not to be there and functioning. 'This is why the fire department took some time for some of these ECDs to open.' MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Kholofelo Morodi confirmed that Tshwane has completed the servicing and upgrading of fire-fighting equipment, with a sharp focus on ECD centres. She said the initiative, executed by Group Property Management, ensures full compliance with national safety standards, specifically SANS 10400 Part T (fire safety) and SANS 1475 (fire extinguishers). Marodi added that these mandate the installation, maintenance and servicing of portable fire suppression equipment. 'It includes the maintenance of fire extinguishers, hose reels, and hydrants and forms part of the city's annual fire safety programme.' She said these maintenance efforts signal a broader shift in Tshwane's multiparty coalition prioritising the safety of employees, children and communities. Marodi added that maintaining a safe workplace supports an efficient municipality and reflects Tshwane's commitment to this principle. 'Reinforcing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards remains pivotal to protecting employees and service users. 'This intervention forms part of an ongoing effort to strengthen internal systems, promote compliance, and safeguard infrastructure, all aimed at delivering reliable and dignified services to residents.'
