I used a bed topper as a mattress — here's 5 things I want you to know before doing the same
It's been over 20 years since the mattress-in-a-box revolutionized the sleep industry and made buying a new bed online easier and more affordable. As a mattress tester, I can certainly see the benefits of a bed-in-a-box (fast and convenient shipping being just one of them), but there is a certain downside: having to wait for the mattress to expand before sleeping on it. However, I will admit that this waiting game made me a lot more creative with my temporary sleep solutions. From airbeds to Japanese floor mattresses, there are plenty of things you can use to turn your floor into a sleep space while you wait for your mattress to expand. But can our favorite mattress toppers ever be used as an actual mattress? I decided to use the expanding time of my new memory foam mattress as an opportunity to find out. After placing a mattress topper on the floor as a makeshift bed, I want you to know these five things before you do the same... Many of the mattresses you'll find in the 2025 best mattress guide come shipped in a box. The best mattresses in a box are convenient and reasonably priced, but do require you to wait until they're fully expanded before you can sleep on them. The mattress topper I decided to use while I waited for my EGOHOME memory foam mattress to expand was the Panda Bamboo 2" Memory Foam Mattress Topper in a twin size. The memory foam mattress topper features a 2" inch layer of cooling gel-infused memory foam wrapped in a removable, machine-washable cover. It also has a silicone anti-slip base. Panda Bamboo 2" Memory Foam Mattress Topper (queen): $229.95 at WalmartAvailable in a twin, queen, king or Cal king at Walmart (but you can also find a full-size for $199.95 at Amazon), the Panda Bamboo 2" Memory Foam Mattress Topper provides a soft, body-hugging foam layer that's thick enough to transform the surface of any any bed or even the floor. From $159.95 (for a twin), this Panda London topper comes with free shipping and free 90-day returns at Walmart. In short, yes. The 2" layer of memory foam was thick enough to contour to my key pressure points when side sleeping (especially in the shoulders and hips) but the hard floor below provided enough firmness to keep me supported when sleeping on my back. I didn't struggle to sleep on the mattress topper at all, falling asleep in the same amount of time as I fall asleep in my actual bed. It also saved me from digging out the airbed or Japanese floor mattress. Overall, the mattress topper on the floor made a great and easy makeshift bed. While the mattress topper on the floor made a quick and easy bed, there are a few things you should know if you plan on using your own bed topper as a mattress... If you're going to use a bed topper as a mattress, it's important to only do so on a short-term basis. Why? Well, mattress toppers should only be used to top mattresses (hence, the name) for additional comfort and support. Anything under the minimum mattress thickness of 8"-10" will not provide enough long-term support, which means the typical mattress topper thickness of under 4" does not have the required depth. Most mattress toppers have covers, but not all of them are washable or removable. So, for good sleep hygiene, it's best to cover them with a sheet if you're sleeping on them. A fitted sheet or flat sheet are both fine, and they don't need to be deep, either. Also, don't forget the pillow and blanket, duvet or comforter. If you're sleeping on a hard floor, such as kitchen or bathroom tiles, you'll likely be cooler, so you may want to bring an extra blanket just in case. There are many types of mattress toppers, so it's important to know how to choose the right mattress topper for you. I recommend avoiding mattress pads, down and feather mattress toppers, and microfiber mattress toppers; they can be unsupportive and uncomfortable. Latex mattress toppers are supportive, eco-friendly, breathable, and hypoallergenic. However, they are very expensive, so you may not want to place one on the floor. You can't go wrong with a memory foam topper, though. The dense foam provides enough thickness for a soft but supportive sleep surface, especially if you choose the best memory foam mattress topper for you. Most memory foam mattress toppers are 2" to 4" in height, which is generally thick enough to make any hard surface soft and comfortable. Any thinner and you're likely to be able to feel the floor beneath the topper, so make sure the mattress topper you pick is at least 2" tall. Then we have size. If you have a queen-size mattress topper for your queen-sized bed, you'll understandably want to use it instead of buying a twin-size topper. Likewise, if you're purchasing a topper as a temporary alternative to a mattress, it makes sense to buy one to match the dimensions of your actual mattress. However, if you have limited floor space, are sleeping solo, and have the budget, you may want to consider a smaller topper size. You'll also need to think about where you'll be placing your mattress topper. Both carpeted or hard floors are fine, but bear in mind that carpeted floors prevent ventilation and may make your mattress topper feel warm and stuffy, particularly if you're prone to overheating at night. Make sure the floor space is tidy, clean, and vacuumed to prevent any allergy triggers. Likewise, make sure the room is the right temperature for sleep and that there's not too much light coming through its windows.

I'm sleeping on Amazon's best-selling EGOHOME Memory Foam Mattress — here's what I think so far
Every time I scroll through Amazon looking for mattress deals, l always find plenty of low-cost memory foam beds from brands that I've never heard of at prices that seem too good to be true. One budget-friendly mattress brand that has been on my radar recently is EGOHOME. Its memory foam mattresses are Amazon bestsellers, and you can now buy a queen-size EGOHOME Black 12" Mattress for $314.49 at Amazon. Intrigued, I visited the brand's website, where you can now save up to 47% on the Black 12" Mattress with code HONOR10 at EGOHOME, thanks to an extended Memorial Day mattress sale. After reading the description of the Back 12" Mattress's "plush, cradling comfort", I decided to try it out. So, does its comfort deserve a place in our best cheap mattress guide? Read on to find out what I thought after a week of testing, and stay tuned for the full review... Look through this year's best mattress guide and you'll find plenty of top-quality memory foam mattresses, but not many are as affordable as EGOHOME's mattress line-up. The Black 12" Mattress is the brand's most popular model and typically costs under $500 for a queen. While EGOHOME also makes some popular hybrid mattresses, I wanted to try the all-foam version of the Black 12" Mattress as A) it's designed to be softer than its hybrid counterpart, and I prefer plush beds; and B) I've never slept on a memory foam bed, just latex, hybrid, and classic innerspring mattresses. EGOHOME Black 12" Mattress: queen was $699 now $333 with code HONOR10 at EGOHOMEWhile you can expect to find monthly mattress sales at EGOHOME, their Memorial Day sale has been extended and you can now get up to 57% off a queen, reducing it to $333 with code HONOR10. Alternatively, you can currently buy a queen Black 12" Mattress for $314.49 at Amazon, but you won't get the benefits that you get when buying directly from the brand: a 100-night sleep trial and an 10-year warranty. The 12" Black Memory Foam Mattress is, you guessed it, 12" tall and made up of three foam layers. Covering the layers is a graphene-infused, antibacterial cover to prevent odors and keep the surface cool. The top layer is memory foam infused with compressed anti-microbial copper and gel particles for a more hygienic sleep surface. In the middle, you'll find a heat-dissipating foam layer for temperature regulation, while the bottom layer uses high-density foam for more support. The EGOHOME mattress is fiberglass-free, too, using a safer flame retardant inner cover. Is it a contender for our best mattresses on Amazon guide? Here's what I think so far... After a week of sleeping on a full EGOHOME Black 12" Mattress, I was impressed with some of its features, but I also have the odd complaint. Here are five of the initial thoughts I have had about the budget all-foam bed: As a lightweight side sleeper, I find a lot of mattresses to be much firmer than they claim to be. That's why I was looking forward to testing an all-foam bed, especially one that promises ultra-plushness. I'm pleased to say that the EGOHOME Black 12" delivers on that promise. My key side-sleeping pressure points (such as my shoulders and hips) have been cradled and hugged by the memory foam from night one, making the mattress a strong contender for a place in our best mattress for side sleepers guide. As a mattress tester, I've unboxed a dozen hybrid mattresses — and they can be a mighty pain to unbox due to their bulkiness and weight. However, a full-size EGOHOME Black 12" Mattress was surprisingly light, weighing in at 53lbs. (The previous mattress I tested weighed 103lbs.) While I did need to recruit two people to carry the box upstairs (boxed-up mattresses are heavy, period, no matter their design), I unboxed the mattress by myself and it was incredibly easy. EGOHOME advises customers to wait 12-48 hours for the mattress to expand on your bed frame, so I braced myself for two nights of sleeping on the floor. However, the mattress was pretty quick to expand, reaching a height of 11" just 20 minutes after unboxing. After one night of sleeping on the floor, I found that the bed had reached its full 12" height, so I was sleeping on the mattress by night two. While I've tried plenty of the best mattress toppers (all memory foam), nothing quite braced me for the feel of an all-foam mattress. I will admit it did take me to get used to the "hug" of the memory foam — but not while sleeping. I only felt the slow-moving feel of the foam when I had to move around, such as when moving across the mattress to get out on the other side of bed. A fellow mattress tester once called a memory foam mattress (from a well-known brand that shall remain nameless) that she was testing "claustrophobic" and couldn't wait to get rid. While I'm used to it after a week, I know a lot of sleepers prefer a bouncy bed and find memory foam too restrictive. Despite the mattress having a cover made from the brand's "Anti-heat Graphene" fabric, I do not find the bed to be cooling. In fact, on the first humid night of testing I woke up feeling warm. (For the record, I do not usually sleep hot). While during milder weather I sleep fine, I will definitely be using my Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector once testing is over. ✅ It's cost-effective: A queen size EGOHOME is regularly priced under $500, with a twin under $300. ✅ It's easy to set up: Its manageable 53lbs weight means unboxing is pretty easy for one person. ✅ Its perfect for side sleepers: I need a lot of softness when side sleeping, and this is the first mattress I've tested that has provided me with the right amount of pressure relief. ❌ It sleeps a little warm: Despite an "anti-heat" cover, I did find the cover to retain a lot of warmth on humid nights. Once the testing period is over I'll add a cooling mattress protector or topper to offset this. ❌ It's not for those who prefer firmer beds: As a side sleeper under 130lbs, I love the cradling softness of this all-foam bed. But stomach sleepers and those who like a firmer, supportive mattress should avoid.

Nectar, Bear and more — today's biggest memory foam mattress deals in the Memorial Day sales
A good memory foam bed delivers the 'aah' effect as you sink into the foams; if you've lost that feeling it might be time for a mattress upgrade. I've found big savings on all-foam beds to shop today, including $400 off the luxury Saatva Contour5 Mattress at Saatva. The best memory foam mattresses are known for their body-hugging coziness and superb pressure relief — they're great for soothing aches and pains. And in the Memorial Day mattress sales I've found a memory foam bed for every budget, all packed full of 'ahh'. Want something with a bit more bounce? Our expert-tested best mattress guide features, foam, hybrid, and latex mattresses to browse today. 1. Saatva Contour5 Mattress: queen was $2,999 now $2,599 at SaatvaThe luxurious Saatva Contour5 Mattress comes in two firmness levels — we tested Medium for our Saatva Contour5 Mattress review — to suit a wide range of sleep styles, with a dense 5lb foam core ensuring exceptional pressure relief at every firmness. The (otherwise excellent) support does taper out a touch at the sides but that was our only complaint; the Contour5 is surprisingly breathable and the motion isolation is impressive. There's $400 off all sizes with our Saatva Memorial Day sales link, reducing a queen to $2,599 (was $2,999.) For an even bigger saving wait for the 15% off sale but do so with caution — we're expecting Saatva prices to rise due to mattress tariffs. I recommend shopping now for a sure-fire deal. The Contour5 comes with a full year's trial, forever warranty and free white glove delivery. Our review: ★★★★½ User score: ★★★★★ (20+ reviews) 2. Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress: queen $949 at NectarThe Premier Memory Foam Mattress from Nectar delivers superb body-hugging comfort. It cushions the body in areas where you press against the mattress to prevent pressure build-up so you can lie on your side without numb arms and dead hips. Our Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress review team highly recommend it for couples as the motion isolation is five star — when your partner tosses and turns, you won't feel them move. It's not as luxurious as the Contour5 and with only one firmness available we don't recommend it for stomach sleepers. But at just $949 for a queen in the Nectar mattress sale it's great value and comes with a 365-night trial and lifetime warranty. Our review: ★★★★½ User score: ★★★★½ (6,200+ reviews) 3. EGOHOME 12" Memory Foam Mattress: queen was $429.99 now $298.98 at AmazonThe best cheap mattresses keep you comfortable without breaking your budget and they're ideal for spare rooms and short-term use. The 12" all-foam mattress from EGOHOME promises a medium feel and while reviews indicate it's firmer than expected, we still predict this will be a crowd-pleaser of a guest bed... although it might take a few visitors to break in. For Memorial Day there's 30% off the queen EGOHOME 12" Memory Foam, knocking it down it $298.88 (was $429.99.) That's only $20 more than the lowest price we've seen and it comes with a 10-year warranty (but no sleep trial.) User score: ★★★★½ (1,500+ reviews) 4. Bear Original Mattress: queen was $998 now $598.50 at BearIt's been a long time since I've seen 40% off at Bear and the deal is set to end soon, so act fast. In our Bear Original mattress review we described the bed as a "crowd pleasing memory foam mattress with a price tag to match" and while it lacks the marshmallow relief of the Contour5 or Nectar Premier, the support is top notch. We're used to seeing 35% off at Bear and it's been that way for much of Memorial Day — I predict this flash sale will be gone... in a flash. A queen is currently $598.50 (was $998) and comes with a 120-night trial, forever warranty and a free pillow set. Our review: ★★★★ User score: ★★★★½ (10,700+ reviews) More top sales to consider
