5 Perfume Myths Busted: According To A Perfume Expert

Perfumes behave differently depending on the weather, and how you apply them should vary too. In winter, spraying directly on the skin works well, as your body heat helps release the fragrance slowly over time. But in summer, when it's hot and humid, it's better to spray perfume on your clothes or under layers. When applied on skin in the heat, the fragrance can feel too strong at first and then fade away faster. Myth 2: All Eau de Parfums (EDPs) are the same Just because a bottle says EDP doesn't mean it's strong or long-lasting. Eau de Parfum is supposed to have a higher concentration of fragrance oil usually around 20% compared to Eau de Toilette (EDT) or Eau de Cologne (EDC). But here's the catch: there's no strict rule or global standard. Some brands use lower oil content and still label it as EDP. That's why it's always worth testing a perfume yourself, rather than relying solely on the label. Myth 3: Coffee clears your nose while sampling perfumes We've all seen those little bowls of coffee beans in perfume stores, and many believe sniffing coffee helps reset your sense of smell. But the truth is, coffee doesn't actually 'cleanse" your nose. It can even fatigue your olfactory senses if used too often. It might help if you're comparing just two fragrances, but if you're testing multiple scents, it's better to take a break, step outside for some fresh air, or smell your own skin instead that's what truly resets your nose. Myth 4: Expensive perfumes are always better Not always. A high price tag doesn't guarantee better ingredients or performance. Many luxury brands spend heavily on celebrity endorsements and advertising, which adds to the product's cost — but not necessarily its quality. Of course, very cheap perfumes often cut corners with synthetic or low-grade ingredients, which affects both scent and longevity. But between the extremes lies a world of beautifully crafted fragrances worth discovering. It's not about the price — it's about what works for you.

How to choose the right perfume? Here is a smart guide to finding your signature scent

Choosing a bottle of perfume is not as easy as it looks. It could be overwhelming, but you simply cannot pick the most stylish looking bottle from the aisle. In fact, since your signature scent talks a lot about your personality, finding a fragrance that truly resonates with you is an equally important task. And dare if you thought that the fragrance your friend is wearing would suit you as well, I would say, time to rethink! How to choose the right perfume?(Pexels) So, here we are, with this guide on choosing the right scent as per your skin, mood, and occasion. But first, let us understand the basic difference between Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and Cologne. Understanding the difference between Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and Cologne The difference between Eau de Parfum (EDP), Eau de Toilette (EDT), and Cologne lies primarily in the concentration of fragrance oils, which affects intensity, longevity, and price. Eau de Parfum (EDP): It has a higher concentration of fragrance oils, making it long-lasting and more intense. Usually more expensive, but ideal if you want a fragrance that lasts all day or into the night. Eau de Toilette (EDT): Lighter than EDP, it's more subtle and typically used for daytime or in warmer climates. It's also usually more affordable. Cologne (Eau de Cologne): The lightest and most affordable option, often marketed towards men, and good for a quick splash or refresh. Understanding the notes of perfumes: Before choosing a fragrance, it is crucial to understand the notes of perfumes. Perfume notes are the individual ingredients that make up the scent, and they are typically divided into three categories: Notes Description Common Examples Longevity Top Notes First impression of the perfume; light and evaporate quickly Citrus (lemon, bergamot), Mint, Lavender, Basil 5 – 15 minutes Heart Notes (Middle Notes) The core of the fragrance; emerges after top notes fade Rose, Jasmine, Ylang-ylang, Cinnamon, Geranium 20 minutes – 1 hour Base Notes Foundation of the perfume; rich and long-lasting Vanilla, Musk, Amber, Patchouli, Sandalwood 1 – 6+ hours Understanding the perfume composition: When planning to buy a perfume, it is crucial to understand its composition. Perfumes are made using a combination of natural and synthetic components that blend together to create a distinctive scent for you. Fragrances are also diversified into different fragrance families like floral, woody, or sensual. Analysing each scent: Floral: Floral scents are just perfect for a daytime wear. These scents contain notes like rose, magnolia, jasmine, and gardenia. The floral scents are perfect for fun brunches or office wear. Woody: Woody notes are perfect for a special date night. These notes are long-lasting and add a warmth to your personality. Woody scents include notes of sandalwood, cedar wood, patchouli, and vetiver. Fruity: A fruity aroma can be your perfect summer scent and are an-occasion fragrance. The fruity notes contain citrus notes sourced from pear, lemon, peach, mandarin, or berries. Sensual: If you're looking to buy a passionate and alluring fragrance, go for a sensual perfume with notes of vanilla, iris, and patchouli. These sensual fragrances linger delicately on to your skin. Understanding Body Chemistry and Perfume What is Body Chemistry? Your body chemistry is influenced by your skin type, diet, hormones, pH level, and even medications. These factors affect how a perfume's ingredients interact with your skin and how the fragrance develops over time. How Perfume Reacts with Skin When perfume is applied, it blends with the oils on your skin. The top notes may fade quickly, and the heart and base notes can either enhance or clash, depending on your body's natural scent. That's why testing a perfume before buying is so important. Tips to Choose the Right Perfume for Your Body Chemistry Know your skin type Oily skin: Holds fragrance longer, intensifying the scent. Go for lighter or citrus perfumes. Dry skin: Tends to absorb fragrance faster. Richer, more concentrated perfumes like eau de parfum are better choices. Test before you buy Never buy a perfume based on how it smells on a paper strip or someone else. Always test it on your wrist or inner elbow and give it time—at least 30 minutes—to see how it evolves. Consider your natural body odour Choose scents that balance or complement your natural smell. For example, if you have a sweeter skin scent, fresh or floral perfumes might create a perfect harmony. Try different fragrance families Explore various fragrance families to discover what works best: Floral: Romantic and soft Woody: Warm and grounding Fresh/Citrus: Bright and energizing Oriental/Spicy: Rich and exotic Don't over apply Even the right scent can be overwhelming if overdone. Start with one or two sprays on pulse points (like wrists, behind ears, or neck) and build up only if necessary. Bonus tip: Match perfume to your lifestyle If you're active or outdoorsy, lighter and refreshing scents work best. For formal settings or date nights, deeper and long-lasting fragrances can leave a lasting impression. Conclusion Finding your signature scent is about understanding your own body chemistry and how fragrances interact with it. By taking the time to test and explore, you will discover perfumes that not only smell amazing but feel authentically you. 'This £12 inflating mascara from a beloved brand gave me a false lash effect in one coat'

If there's one beauty item I cannot live without, it's a good mascara. As someone with thin, sparse lashes, one that offers volume is an absolute must. For that exact reason, I, like so many others, have been committed to Maybelline's Lash Sensational Sky High for that limitless volume without feeling weighed down. However, I think I may have just found one that has stolen its crown. The beloved high street brand recently dropped its Colossal Bubble Mascara that promises "nine times the volume in just one coat". New to buy for £11.99 at Superdrug, Amazon and Boots, I was instantly sold by its claims and budget price-tag. Despite being one of the latest additions to the high street, this "inflating" mascara has already earned glowing reviews, with beauty fans on the Maybelline website who say it gives "great length and volume", without being heavy or going clumpy. As someone who is a tad obsessed with new beauty finds, I decided to get my hands on Maybelline's latest invention to see if it was another winner for the brand. A unique formula and comb brush for inflated lashes I'll be honest, the first thing that attracted me to this mascara was its cute yellow packaging with adorable bubble writing that instantly transported me right back to the early '00s. Trendy packaging aside, the product description says that it combines "breakthrough" bubble technology and an inflator comb brush that volumizes and separates the lashes at the same time, so it shouldn't be too heavy or cause clumps. One of the interesting things I read was that the formula has been infused with collagen, a favourite in skincare, to give it that buildable and sleek volume, effectively creating a "bubble lash" effect in ever stroke. I was also surprised at the shape of the applicator, as many mascara wands can be flexible and bendy. Instead, this one felt quite sturdy and less cheap, with the spiral-shape design boasting deep-cut bristles that "inflates 100 percent of the lashes from root to tip." A false lash effect in just one coat After quickly giving my lashes just one coat, I instantly had quite a few thoughts on the application. First, my lashes immediately had that enviable curl that we all try to achieve with both mascara and a pair of curlers. Not only did offer an instant lift and definition, but it looked natural and didn't feel too heavy, which can often be the case with some others out there. Not only did it give that coveted 'false lash effect' to my otherwise thin lashes, I also found that the rigidness of the inflator comb really helped to keep a steady application, which was a surprise as I didn't think I would like it. Beauty deal of the week Looking for last minute gift inspiration for dad ahead of Sunday, June 15. Then don't fret, as we have you covered, as no-one can go wrong with a new bottle of cologne, and we have spotted Versace's The Dreamer for him Eau de Toilette for 67 percent less at Superdrug. Hailed for being "underrated" and "truly unique", a large 100ml bottle of this fragrance has been dropped from £74 to £24, allowing you to make a huge saving of £50 and get in a thoughtful gift. Described as "warm" and "fresh", Versace's Dreamer is an aromatic fragrance that, while belonging to the cologne family, is said to boast a variety of notes that make it suitable for both men and women. The scent opens on vibrant notes of juniper, tarragon, and artemisia, before blending into heart notes of iris, lily and flax flowers to add a touch of softness. It then ends on a comforting base of tobacco blossom and amber, offering a smoky, luxurious finish. The transparent, clear fragrance itself is housed in an opulent glass bottle that has been embossed with the iconic medusa logo, representing the luxury aesthetic of the iconic fashion house. Versace's Dreamer EDT has managed to earn glowing reviews and a 4.6 rating from shoppers, with one saying: "Truly unique and dreamy fragrance. It's a great fragrance but it's underrated. Guys you have to try this one, it's great for all year round." And someone else wrote: "Not to be overlooked. This is a lesser known Versace men's fragrance but oh my it is gorgeous ! Hubby loved it and amazing value for money." Versace's The Dreamer For Him Eau de Toilette (100ml) can be bought for 67 percent less at Superdrug now. However, I found that it really helped to properly lift right from the roots of the lashes without any accidental smudging, while each of my lashes managed to look effortlessly separated, instead of clumping together and feeling weighed down. It is worth noting that, while I was a fan of the applicator brush, not everyone was. In fact, a few reviews on the brand's website that the fullness of the design means they have wipe excess off the brush, or it causes clumping or smudging for them. Exagger-Eyes Mascara or Maxfactor's £15 False Lash Effect Supreme Recharge Mascara might be worth checking out as alternatives. Overall verdict With its cute packaging and ability to lift my lashes in just one coat without heaviness or clumping, I was instantly sold on Maybelline's Colossal Bubble Mascara. As for me, I do prefer a natural look with my lashes, so one or two coats was enough for me, although the collagen-infused formula can offer a much more 'plumped' and 'dramatic' effect for those who'd maybe prefer that. Another positive is that it stayed on all day without beginning to break down or smudge. Consider staying power is another must for me, this was just another positive to tick off the box.
