Crackdown on Stockport reservoir trouble 'hotspot'

New measures are being taken to clampdown on a trouble "hotspot" near a Stockport had raised concerns about unauthorised camping, fishing and anti-social behaviour around Sykes Reservoir in Alexandra Park, of noise disturbances, littering and the abuse of drugs and alcohol were "recurring, disruptive and deeply detrimental to the quality of life for those that live near the reservoir," Councillor Asa Caton a Town Hall meeting on 10 July he brought forward a motion calling for a public space protection order (PSPO), which grants powers to tackle certain anti-social activities or behaviours. The motion stated: "GMP [Greater Manchester Police] and the EA [Environment Agency] have performed joint operational visits recently with limited success." 'Protect residents' Mr Caton said: "We have explored other avenues, we've increased signage, engaged with local angling groups and stepped up patrols, but the problems persist, so a PSPO would give us the legal framework to prohibit overnight fishing and the associated behaviours, with appropriate exemptions and enforcement mechanisms."It would send a clear message that we are listening to our residents and taking action to protect their interests."Dan Oliver, Stockport Council's cabinet member for communities, culture and public protection, said he had already started to arrange a meeting to progress with the PSPO before the motion was brought up at the 10 July, according to the Local Democracy Reporting added council officers had requested more evidence about the need for the order and in the last six weeks had received "a series of reports that will justify" the Manchester Police was approached for comment. "I got a letter in the post that said it may cause death.... people have been left stranded'

A woman who received a sudden letter in the post telling her to stop driving her car immediately claims she has been left 'stranded'. Sharon Jackson, who owns a Citroën DS3, received an urgent safety recall notice from the car manufacturer on June 30, delivered to her home in Stockport, which read: "Stop driving alert." The notice informed her about the 'urgent' recall to her vehicle over the Takata air bag inflators which pose a 'serious safety risk', degrading over time and in the event of an accident, could rupture and cause severe injuries or death. She has instead been forced to pay out of her own pocket for a hire car, saying 'thousands of others must be stranded' due to the notice, to enable her to move from her home in Edgeley. "You can't just leave people stranded," she told the M.E.N. "The letter came through the post and I thought 'oh my goodness', because it told me to stop driving immediately. "There is a line to call which I tried. At first I was on hold for three hours and gave up. At 8am the next day I had my finger on the button ready and was on the phone for an hour and a half, to be told there were no instructions at all." Sharon was able to follow the free booking portal as signposted on her letter to get the issue fixed on her car - but the nearest available date was in Sale on July 23. But due to her moving house on Friday (July 4), she claims she will have to leave her car unattended in her permit-only space, and risk receiving fines in the interim. Despite fears about the safety of the airbag inflators, she will still need to drive the car to the dealership for repair. "I asked Citroën on the phone how I was supposed to drive my car and move house, to which I was told it had to stay where it is and that I can't drive it," she explained. "We haven't been offered a courtesy car. There is no provisions, no answers and no help. This needs addressing and some awareness of the stress that has been caused to thousands of people. "I have had to hire a car because I'm in the middle of moving house, so hopefully Citroën will reimburse me for that. I am already stressed with the move, so it has been through the roof. "People will need to use their cars, for things like getting to urgent medical appointments. Getting a notice this last minute just stops people from doing anything. "Once you've received the letter, you can't drive your car again. It has to stay where it is. I spoke to my insurance who told me I wouldn't be covered. The letter even says there is the risk of death. "I actually ended up crying on a couple of occasions yesterday because I spoke to that many people." Join our Stockport WhatsApp group HERE Citroën has issued a recall for C3 and DS3 models manufactured in Europe at various times between 2009 and 2019 due to the defective airbags and safety risks posed. The vehicles included in the action are the second generation Citroën C3, manufactured between 2009 and 2016; the Citroën DS 3 manufactured between 2009 and 2016 and DS Automobiles DS 3 manufactured between 2016 and 2019. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has stipulated that motorists should not drive a recalled car until the necessary repairs have been made. The Manchester Evening News contacted Citroen about the specifics of Sharon's case, such as the issue with no offer of a courtesy car, but did not receive a response. A Citroën spokesperson said: "The replacement of airbags made by the supplier Takata affects many vehicles manufacturers including ourselves. Vehicles of ours included in this new stop-drive action in the UK, were already part of an ongoing comprehensive recall campaign that started over one year ago, first in Southern Europe and then expanded northwards. "Recall decisions, especially stop-drive actions, are based on multiple factors, including airbag specifications, vehicle age and usage, climate conditions, and notifications from regulatory authorities. "The Company's focus is on completing the replacement of airbags in affected vehicles as swiftly as possible. Working hand in hand with our Citroën Retailer Network we are working to maximise the number of vehicles we can repair every day. "To increase our repair capacity further, work is ongoing on introducing additional airbag replacement sites at convenient locations as well as repair at home options. It is inevitable, with such a large number of vehicles affected, that customers will be inconvenienced in the short term. "However, we are deploying a variety of options to support mobility, recognising that every driver will have individual requirements, and that priority needs to be given to customers with the most urgent needs. "Customers should check if their vehicle is affected and what actions are advised by using the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) check tool on the Citroën UK website If impacted, they should register their vehicle to enable the processing of their repair as soon as possible. "Owners can contact our Recall Helpline on 0800 917 9285, Citroën Customer Care on 0800 093 9393 or via our website."

Emotional scenes as firefighters wave goodbye to old fire station

Serving and retired firefighters came together for a final parade at Stockport's old central fire station. Crews have now moved out of Stockport Community Fire Station ahead of work beginning on its 'state-of-the-art' replacement. The building on King Street West - between the town centre and Edgeley -is being demolished and rebuilt as part of a £6m project. Fire service bosses initially wanted to close the station, along with Whitehill station in Reddish, and merge them into one new station. READ MORE: Friends left stunned at Manchester Airport after landing £24,000 in terminal READ MORE: 'What happened to my wife was horrendous - the person responsible needs to come forward' But the large amount of redevelopment in the borough, particularly in and around the town centre, meant fire service chiefs were unable to find an affordable and suitable new site for the proposed new station. In November 2022 it was announced they would be retaining both and spending £6m on each, rebuilding them. The Stockport station is being done first. Crews working there have been relocated to Whitehill. The Manchester branch of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) posted on Facebook on Tuesday saying: "Today Stockport fire station closed its doors for the last time. "Crews will be working from Whitehill station whilst the old station at Stockport is demolished and the new one is built. Firefighters and retired Firefighters came together this morning for the last ever parade." The new building is expected to be ready for firefighters to move into next September. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) insists there will be no reduction in the number of fire engines or firefighters during the rebuild, and say they are 'absolutely confident that we will continue to provide our excellent emergency response'. "Firefighters will continue their usual duties in and around Stockport's station area, including prevention activities, school visits and training," they added. Sarah Nattrass, Aassistant chief fire officer, said: 'Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service apologises for any delay residents have felt in us providing an update to our plans for Stockport fire station. "We understand that any visible change in our arrangements can bring uncertainties and worries. 'The state-of-the-art fire station is set to be delivered in Autumn next year and will provide the community with a modern, flexible, resilient fire and rescue service. 'A public consultation was first undertaken in Spring 2023 to make sure the plans developed were in tune with the needs of the local community. Further details and updates have been available on our website throughout the process. 'I also want to reassure residents that there will be no reduction in the amount of fire engines or firefighters in the area during the rebuild process, with crews moving to nearby Whitehill station. "This decision has been taken after extensive data analysis and we are absolutely confident that we will continue to provide our excellent emergency response both within the immediate area around Stockport King Street West Fire Station and across the wider borough of Stockport. 'I am committed to providing our local community opportunities to hear directly from us as the construction of the new community fire station, which will bring lasting benefits to the borough, progresses.'

Phil Foden's cousin and her three children narrowly escape horror house fire in middle of the night

Manchester City star Phil Foden has been left distraught after his cousin's house went up in flames in the middle of the night. Codie Owen, who the England midfielder, 24, regards as a 'sister', was in her property in Edgeley, Stockport, with her three children when the inferno began ravaging through the house. Ms Owen initially carried two of her young children out of the property and to safety before bravely re-entering to rescue the third. The blaze is believed to have been sparked by a faulty extractor fan in the first floor bathroom. Shocked by the news, a source close to the Premier League footballer has revealed he is now helping Codie and her kids find somewhere to live while her house is repaired from the damage. They told The Sun: 'Phil was really upset when he heard what had happened. 'He is really close to Codie. 'They are best pals and spent loads of time together as children. He regards her as a sister and dotes on her children. 'He's now helping her find alternative accommodation as she can't return to the house for a while due to the smoke damage.' Fire crews spent around two hours extinguishing the blaze at the house near League One side Stockport County's stadium, Edgeley Park. Emergency services also rushed Codie and her children to Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, over smoke inhalation concerns. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service told MailOnline: 'At 1.20am on Friday 2 May, three fire engines attended a house fire in Edgeley, Stockport. 'The fire was on the first floor, and crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel and a positive pressure ventilation fan to tackle it. 'One adult and three children were taken to hospital for precautionary checks. Crews were in attendance for two hours.' The fire at his cousin's property came just two days after MailOnline reported how the midfielder had listed his mansion for sale at an eye-watering price of £3million. Foden moved out of the sprawling property in Prestbury, Cheshire, last year after a raucous party led to the police being called. He now resides in a more isolated home in the countryside with his family but is still within commuting distance of City's training ground in east Manchester. The mansion, which has a price tag of £3.25million, is complete with its own cinema, indoor pool and five bathrooms. It also boasts its own gym, bar, hot tub and extensive gardens with a swing and a trampoline and has been fitted with a private electric security gate.
