Upgrade Rs700 cr hosp into a MediCity, CM urges Manipal, Temasek

Nagpur: CM Devendra Fadnavis has proposed a grand MediCity (medical city) in Nagpur, on the lines of the EduCity in Navi Mumbai. Speaking about his idea during an event at Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, Fadnavis suggested to private stakeholders that their proposed investment for a multi-specialty hospital could be tweaked for a grander vision. A MoU was signed between the govt of Maharashtra, Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt Ltd, and Temasek at Navi Mumbai. This collaboration aims to establish a 350-bed multi-speciality hospital in Nagpur with a proposed investment of Rs700 crore. This proposed hospital is expected to create 3,000 direct employment opportunities. While the hospital proposal still stands, CM Fadnavis suggested that the stakeholders consider developing a MediCity, similar to the EduCity in Navi Mumbai. The EduCity will be spread over a sprawling 250acre campus, located within a 5km radius of the Navi Mumbai International Airport. This futuristic hub — led by CIDCO — is envisioned as a global education hub, offering seamless connectivity to students and faculty from around the world. Maharashtra aims to host at least 10 world-class international universities within this EduCity, establishing a dynamic ecosystem for higher education, medical innovation, sports, and research. Foreign universities from USA, Australia, Italy & others to set up campuses in Navi Mumbai

Five foreign universities will set up campuses on a 250-acre plot in Navi Mumbai to enable Mumbai Metropolitan Region to emerge as a global education hub, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday. During the day, Letters of Intent (LoI) from the University Grants Commission (UGC) were handed over to Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) of Italy, University of Western Australia, University of York, University of Aberdeen and Illinois Tech of USA to set up campuses. Addressing a press conference with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the CM said talk about collaborating with foreign universities was on since 2004 but it was National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that was making this happen. 'Navi Mumbai is being transformed into EduCity. Ten universities will set up campuses over a 250 acre area to provide world class education. Accessibility and affordability are key problems our students who wish to avail global education face. Foreign universities' campuses will help our children get global education at 25 per cent expenditure,' he said. 'A growing economy like India needs a global workforce. The decision to set up foreign campuses here will help achieve the goal and also save foreign exchange. Mumbai and its metropolitan region will emerge as a global education hub,' the CM added. Speaking at the press conference, Pradhan said nine foreign universities are setting up campuses in the country, while six more are in the pipeline. 'We are focusing on quality foreign education,' the Union minister added. Fadnavis also informed that Gondwana University in Gadchiroli has tied up with University of Western Australia, which is considered the best in mining. Our mining destination is Gadchiroli, he said. Hailing NEP 2020, Fadnavis said it was helping universities of the country tie up with global institutions and also open campuses abroad. IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, Symbiosis etc have set up campuses in Africa, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, he added.

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's legacy impacts Johor significantly, says Kukup rep

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The administration of Malaysia's fifth Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, has left a profound and lasting impact on Johor, says an assemblyman. Datuk Jefridin Atan (BN-Kukup) said numerous mega projects were implemented in the state during Abdullah's tenure, particularly under the Ninth Malaysia Plan from 2006 to 2010. Among these projects was the launch of the Iskandar Development Region, now known as Iskandar Malaysia, in Iskandar Puteri, formerly known as Nusajaya. 'This mega project turned Johor into one of the fastest-growing economic hubs in Southeast Asia, with major investments across various sectors including real estate, services, logistics, and education. 'Areas such as Johor Baru, Iskandar Puteri, Pasir Gudang, Tanjung Pelepas, and Pontian underwent remarkable transformation as a result of this project,' he said. Jefridin made these remarks during a debate on the royal address by Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim at the state assembly meeting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Kota Iskandar on Monday (May 19). He added that the establishment of the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), launched in 2007, also included several districts in Johor such as Mersing and Segamat. The initiative aimed to stimulate economic development in less-developed areas through investment in infrastructure, education, and industry. He also highlighted the development of EduCity, which now hosts several internationally renowned universities and institutions of higher learning. 'The presence of EduCity has positioned Johor as a global education destination, offering opportunities for both local and international students in various professional fields,' he added. Jefridin said the strengthening of agriculture and agro-industrial sectors under the new agricultural policy introduced during Abdullah's time also benefited farmers and smallholders in Kluang, Mersing, Kota Tinggi, and Segamat. 'The focus was on modern agriculture that enhanced the nation's food security and improved rural incomes,' he said, adding that Abdullah also emphasised human capital during his administration. Jefridin noted that Abdullah placed strong importance on human capital development through the Education Development Master Plan (PIPP), launched in 2006. 'Key focuses included teacher training, the integration of ICT in education, and improving students' academic performance nationwide. 'Under his administration, the country's development approach was revitalised through the principle of 'growth with distribution', emphasising comprehensive and balanced development between economic and social aspects, urban and rural areas, as well as among regions and ethnic groups,' he added. Abdullah, fondly known as Pak Lah, passed away at the National Heart Institute on April 14, at the age of 85. He served as Prime Minister from 31 October 2003 to 3 April 2009, leaving a lasting legacy in national development through initiatives such as the Northern Corridor Economic Region, J-QAF programme, and the halal industry.
