Nagpur: CM
Devendra Fadnavis
has proposed a grand MediCity (medical city) in Nagpur, on the lines of the EduCity in Navi Mumbai. Speaking about his idea during an event at Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, Fadnavis suggested to private stakeholders that their proposed investment for a multi-specialty hospital could be tweaked for a grander vision.
A MoU was signed between the govt of Maharashtra, Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt Ltd, and Temasek at Navi Mumbai. This collaboration aims to establish a 350-bed multi-speciality hospital in Nagpur with a proposed investment of Rs700 crore. This proposed hospital is expected to create 3,000 direct employment opportunities.
While the hospital proposal still stands, CM Fadnavis suggested that the stakeholders consider developing a MediCity, similar to the EduCity in Navi Mumbai. The EduCity will be spread over a sprawling 250acre campus, located within a 5km radius of the Navi Mumbai International Airport. This futuristic hub — led by CIDCO — is envisioned as a global education hub, offering seamless connectivity to students and faculty from around the world.
Maharashtra aims to host at least 10 world-class international universities within this EduCity, establishing a dynamic ecosystem for higher education, medical innovation, sports, and research.

IBM opens Mumbai client centre to support Maharashtra's quantum push

IBM on Tuesday announced the opening of its new India Client Experience Centre in Mumbai. As part of the facility's mission to support Indian enterprises in adopting AI, hybrid cloud, and quantum computing, the company signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the Government of Maharashtra to explore collaboration on the state's quantum initiatives. The LoI outlines areas of engagement, including providing insights and expertise to support Maharashtra's quantum vision, as well as contributing to the development of the state's quantum ecosystem through workshops and skills development programmes. Inaugurating the centre, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, 'With AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors, we are building a Viksit Maharashtra and Viksit Bharat. These technologies can accelerate sustainability and efficiency across sectors, creating new opportunities for growth and progress. Through our collaboration with IBM, we will harness quantum innovation to transform lives while building a skilled talent pool to democratise its benefits and make them accessible to every citizen of the state.' The IBM India Client Experience Centre will be housed in the company's new offices in Mumbai. It will serve as a collaborative hub where IBM experts, clients, and partners can co-create solutions tailored to India's unique business challenges. The centre will also offer immersive demonstrations across IBM's technology portfolio — including AI via the watsonx platform, data and automation, cybersecurity, hybrid cloud, and consulting-led transformation. Hans Dekkers, General Manager, IBM Asia Pacific, said: 'The IBM India Client Experience Centre reinforces our commitment to advancing India's journey in AI, hybrid cloud, and quantum computing. Our interest in helping the Government of Maharashtra build a vibrant quantum ecosystem exemplifies that commitment.' 'IBM welcomes the opportunity to engage with the Government of Maharashtra on advancing quantum computing skills in the state, in alignment with the country's National Quantum Mission and the vision of Viksit Bharat,' said Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India and South Asia.

I-day gift for citizens: Second sea-viewing promenade on Mumbai Coastal Road to be inaugurated today

Citizens are set to get their second sea-viewing promenade this Independence Day as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to open the 5.5km-long stretch of the 7.5 km-long Mumbai Coastal Road promenade on August 15. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the promenade on Thursday, and the promenade will be thrown open to citizens a day later. 'The promenade will be inaugurated virtually by the CM on Thursday. Citizens will be able to access the promenade from 4.30pm on Friday (August 15),' BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and state-appointed administrator told the Indian Express on Wednesday. The 10km-long coastal road was opened to traffic in March last year. However, the promenade was yet to be opened since some balance work for the same was yet to be completed. The civil works were completed in the first week of July, and it was set for opening on July 15. However, the opening date was deferred by the authorities, and the final date of inauguration was awaiting confirmation. 'The civil works at the promenade have been completed. Only some last-minute ancillary works are underway at the spot, including cleaning of the surface, putting dustbins in place, painting of the track and road signages,' said an official. According to officials, the 7.5 km-long coastal road promenade will be opened in two phases. In the first phase that will be inaugurated on Thursday, the BMC will be opening 5.5km of the stretch, and in the second phase, the remaining 2km stretch will be opened. The 5.5km stretch will comprise walkways and sitting areas, similar to the Marine Drive. Besides these, the promenade will also include a cycle track. Civic officials said the promenade will be accessible via 19 pedestrian underpasses (PuP). These passes will originate from locations such as Khan Abdul Khan Gaffar Road, Haji Ali, and Lala Lajpat Road. 'There are a total of 19 PuPs in the coastal road, of which six will be opened initially at the time of inauguration of this promenade. The remaining PuPs will be opened in a phased manner,' an official said. Meanwhile, in a bid to enhance the greenery of this stretch, the civic body has planted 300 trees—including palm, Washington robusta, and Barringtonia—along the promenade. To cater to the large footfall that is being anticipated at the site, the BMC is also installing four bio-toilets along the promenade, which will be located near Amarsons Garden at Breach Candy, Mahalakshmi, while two are set to be erected in Worli. 'The remaining 2km of the promenade will take more time to open, as it was not included in the first phase of the plan, and a fresh tender was floated for this phase,' the official added.

‘SC, Not Govt, Sent Mahadevi To Rescue Centre': CM Fadnavis On Elephant Madhuri

Last Updated: CNN-News18 Townhall Mumbai: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said his government had no role in sending Elephant Mahadevi to the rescue center. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that the Maharashtra government played no role in sending the elephant Mahadevi (also known as Madhuri) to the rescue centre and that was the Supreme Court's decision. Speaking at CNN-News18's Townhall, Fadnavis told journalist Anand Narasimhan that after a huge uproar the government stepped in with a solution. 'After a huge uproar from the people, we decided to step in with a solution to develop an ecosystem, which is a rescue centre (similar to the rescue centre where she currently resides) near the math". The 36-year-old female elephant was being kept by a Jain monastery in Nandani, Kolhapur, for over three decades. Authorities and animal welfare groups raised serious concerns over her well-being. Veterinarians reported conditions like arthritis, foot rot and psychological distress. In response, PETA India filed a petition. A High-Powered Committee (HPC) appointed by the environment ministry backed the plea and the Bombay High Court in July 2025 ruled that Mahadevi should be relocated to a proper sanctuary for rehabilitation. The Supreme Court upheld the High Court's decision by the end of July. She was relocated to Vantara's Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Anant Ambani's Vantara's Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust in early August said Mahadevi is experiencing freedom for the first time and is now undergoing treatment for multiple health issues. In an update shared on August 4, Vantara said an initial examination revealed chronic foot problems, including overgrown toenails, cuticle damage, laminitis, an old toenail abscess in the right hind foot and swelling in both knees. X-rays showed fractures and arthritis in her front feet. The welfare team has drawn up a treatment plan aimed at tackling the root causes, easing her pain, improving mobility and aiding long-term recovery. While awaiting lab results, a nutritionist is preparing a customised diet. The trust said Mahadevi will be given rest, comfort and 'the highest standard of care" as she heals. view comments First Published: August 13, 2025, 19:04 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
