Mexico hails 'historic' Del Toro as he spends rest day in Giro pink

Isaac Del Toro Romero from Uae Team Emirates celebrates in the white jersey on the podium of the 9th stage of the 108th Giro d'Italia cycling race of 181kms from Gubbio to Siena. Massimo Paolone/LaPresse via ZUMA Press/dpa Isaac del Toro deservedly had his feet up on Monday after making history by becoming the first Mexican in the 116-year history of the Giro d'Italia to wear the pink jersey. "A historic day for Mexican cycling," wrote the Mexican sports newspaper Record after Del Toro's achievement in Siena. Advertisement The 21-year-old, who finished behind superstar Wout van Aert on the challenging ninth stage on Sunday before Monday's rest day, could hardly believe he was leading the world's second greatest cycling race. "As a child, everyone wanted to wear this jersey, and now I have it. This is incredible for me," said Del Toro, who is only competing in his second Grand Tour. Del Toro is not yet talking about a Giro triumph. "Let's see how things go in the third week," he added. However, for former winner Egan Bernal, an overall victory for the Mexican would no longer be a surprise. Advertisement "He is very intelligent, moves well. For me, he is one of the best here," the Colombian said. At the age of 15, Del Toro left his homeland to pursue his professional dream in Europe. In 2023, at just 19, he won the Tour de l'Avenir, which is essentially the Tour de France for young professionals – just as current Tour champion Tadej Pogačar from Slovenia did before him. His aggressive riding style also resembles that of the world champion. Del Toro already rides for the UAE Team, the same outfit as the Slovenian star. The team intend to develop him carefully and have signed him to a long-term contract until 2029. At the Giro, Del Toro was initially only meant to support team-mates Juan Ayuso and Adam Yates. Now, he has already gained more than a minute on his two colleagues and holds a 2:25-minute lead over Slovenian favourite Primož Roglič.

Giro d'Italia: Ayuso pounces for first Grand Tour stage as Roglic takes pink

Primoz Roglic pulled on the pink jersey after stage seven of the Giro d'Italia but Juan Ayuso underlined his credentials as his main challenger by snatching victory in Tagliacozzo. Ayuso (UAE-Team Emirates) had the power to break clear from a select group of favourites in the final few hundred metres of the 12km climb to the finish. His teammate, Mexican rider Isaac Del Toro, came second. The 2021 Giro winner, Egan Bernal (Ineos), took a hugely encouraging third place after an attacking ride three years on from a career-threatening crash. Roglic was initially missing when Ayuso made his move but recovered to cross the line fourth on the stage, enough to take pink by four seconds from the Spaniard at the end of the first major general classification test – with Mads Pedersen surrendering the lead as expected. The 22-year-old Briton Max Poole (Picnic-PostNL) was ninth on the stage to move up to fifth overall, 30 seconds down, while Simon Yates sits ninth at 39 seconds. His brother Adam, carrying injuries from a crash on Thursday, lost a handful of seconds but remains within a minute of pink, while Tom Pidcock lost ground near the finish and is now 70 seconds from Roglic overall. Another British rider, Paul Double, was part of a seven-strong breakaway on the 168km stage from Castel di Sangro. Double was the virtual leader on the road for much of the day as the group built a lead of more than three minutes, but they were reeled in before the steepest part of the final climb.

Ayuso bursts to stage win as Roglič takes overall lead at Giro d'Italia

TAGLIACOZZO, Italy (AP) — Primož Roglič took the overall lead of the Giro d'Italia and Juan Ayuso impressed with his victory in the first summit finish on Friday. The Spaniard earned his first ever Grand Tour stage victory with a burst of energy 400 meters before the end of the seventh stage, ahead of his UAE Team Emirates teammate Isaac Del Toro and Egan Bernal. Roglič, the pre-race favorite and 2023 champion, crossed next — the peloton all four seconds back. It was good enough for Roglič to take the pink jersey. Ayuso improved to second overall, trailing Roglič by four seconds. Del Toro was third, nine seconds off the lead. Friday's stage was the hardest so far with four classified climbs on the 168-kilometer (104 mile) route from Castel di Sangro, including the top category ascent to the finish in Tagliacozzo. 'This win is a big step in my career,' Ayuso said. 'This is my fourth Grand Tour, I've been close to winning at the Vuelta. To do it today at my first Giro d'Italia is special.' Ayuso calculated his late push. 'I knew that I could do only one attack and not mess around with two or three on this final which was very explosive,' he said. 'Others started attacking before. When I saw my distance I went full gas. It was important to not only get the win but also try and recover the time I lost in the time trial.' Femur broken The big crash in Thursday's stage took its toll on teams. Jai Hindley, the 2022 champion, was concussed. Before Friday's stage, the Israel-Premier Tech team reported that Czech cyclist Jan Hirt broke his right femur in the crash. Incredibly, Hirt finished the stage and then went to the hospital. Juri Hollmann of Alpecin Deceuninck sustained a 'double fracture of the right forearm and a complicated fracture of the right hip,' his team said. The German was being flown to Belgium for surgery. Michel Ries of the Arkea-B&B Hotels team also didn't start Friday's stage. Saturday's stage is a 197-kilometer (122-mile) route from Giulianova, a coastal town on the Adriatic Sea, to Castelraimondo. The Giro ends in Rome on June 1. ___ AP sports:

Ayuso wins on Giro mountain, Roglic takes overall lead

This 160km run was the first skirmish between the main title pretenders and lived up to its billing as a battle royale played out in the final 3km of a 12km climb at around a 10 percent incline. Isaac Del Torro of UAE was second and Egan Bernal of Ineos third at just 4sec, while overnight leader Mads Pedersen pushed his time in pink as far as it could go until wilting on the final climb. Slovenian Red Bull rider Primoz Roglic was fourth on the day and the pre-race favourite now leads the Giro ahead of Ayuso, who rode away from the climb clique 400m from the line. Colombian Bernal appeared to follow but then held back, and fellow South American and former Giro winner Richard Carapaz was also in the mix at 4sec in eighth. Italians Giulio Ciccone and Antonio Tiberi were fifth and sixth on the mountaintop finish as home hopes fly high on this edition of the race, littered with mountains over the next 14 stages.

Ayuso pounces to win Giro stage seven, Roglic takes pink jersey

Spain's Juan Ayuso made his move on the climb to the finish to win stage seven of the Giro d'Italia on Friday, his first Grand Tour stage success, with Primoz Roglic moving into the overall lead. The first mountain stage of the race, a 168km ride from Castel di Sangro to Tagliacozzo, came down to Ayuso having the legs to get away from his rivals in the final 400 metres, with his UAE Team-Emirates colleague Isaac del Toro coming second. Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) was third, denying Roglic (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) a place on the podium, but the Slovenian did take the pink leader's jersey from Mads Pedersen, with the Dane losing touch on the final climb.
