Moritz Seider To Captain Germany At Worlds

Germany's initial 25-man roster for the 2025 IIHF World Championship includes three players who played in the NHL this season and three others who are currently under contract to NHL teams. The captain of the team is Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider. The alternates are Jonas Müller, Marc Michaelis and Dominik Kahun. 'It's obviously an absolute honor for me to hold this position, and it fills me with great pride,' said Seider. 'I'll also be following in big footsteps and I'm counting on the support of the others in the locker room. We're really looking forward to the World Championship because we're in a good group and we're optimistic about the tournament.' Besides NHLers Seider, Philipp Grubauer and Lukas Reichel, AHLer Maksymilian Szuber and Kahun, who plays in Switzerland, the remainder of the roster comes from the domestic DEL. That includes seven from champion Eisbären Berlin, four from Red Bull Munich and three each from Adler Mannheim and ERC Ingolstadt. Goaltenders: Mathias Niederberger (Red Bull Munich), Arno Tiefensee (Adler Mannheim / Dallas Stars), Philipp Grubauer (Seattle Kraken). Defensemen: Korbinian Geibel, Eric Mik, Jonas Müller (all Eisbären Berlin), Leon Hüttl, Fabio Wagner (both ERC Ingolstadt), Lukas Kälble (Adler Mannheim), Moritz Seider (Detroit Red Wings), Maksymilian Szuber (Tucson Roadrunners, AHL / Utah HC). Forwards: Marcel Noebels, Leo Pföderl, Frederik Tiffels, Manuel Wiederer (all Eisbären Berlin), Yasin Ehliz, Patrick Hager, Maximilian Kastner (all Red Bull Munich), Alexander Ehl (Düsseldorfer EG), Marc Michaelis (Adler Mannheim), Joshua Samanski (Straubing Tigers / Edmonton Oilers), Justin Schütz (Kölner Haie), Wojciech Stachowiak (ERC Ingolstadt), Dominik Kahun (Lausanne HC, SUI), Lukas Reichel (Chicago Blackhawks). 2026 Olympics will see best German team ever The Germans have had some very good results internationally in recent years, including a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics and another silver at the 2023 IIHF World Championship. They've had some very good young talent to work with but they haven't had a chance to put all of their best players together on one team since the 2010 Winter Olympics. They've improved a lot since then. In fact, it's no stretch to say the 2026 Winter Olympics will feature the greatest German ice hockey team ever assembled.

'Immediately after the end of his NHL season, Tim publicly stated that he would like to join us,' said Christian Künast, manager of the German team. 'We are pleased that we have now calmly resolved all the formalities and that he will be joining us. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ottawa Senators, from whom we have already received approval for his participation, and we look forward to Tim's arrival here in Herning.' Advertisement 'We are, of course, delighted that Tim, a very high-quality player, is joining us and will further strengthen our team for the tournament,' said German coach Harold Kreis. 'He demonstrated his strengths in the past NHL season and delivered a great season with the Senators. We had a very good and detailed conversation during our NHL trip, during which he reiterated his intention to join us. It's all the more pleasing that his participation in the World Championship is now working out.' Stützle becomes the fourth active NHLer on this year's German team (see roster below). To make room for Stützle, Marcel Noebels, a former Philadelphia Flyers prospect who is a veteran of eight World Championships and a silver medalist from the 2018 Winter Olympics, was cut from the team. That reduces the contingent on the team from DEL champion Eisbären Berlin to six. Germany ice hockey team player Eder dies at 26 after cancer

Germany ice hockey national team player Tobias Eder has died at the age of 26 due to complications from a cancer, his Eisbären Berlin team said on Wednesday, citing Eder's family. 'We are shocked, deeply saddened and stunned,' his team wrote on Instagram. 'Tobi unfortunately didn't win his toughest battle. It's impossible to find the right words right now.' Eder was diagnosed with a malignant tumour during a medical examination at the Eisbären Berlin last summer, just a few weeks after his participation in the World Cup in the Czech Republic. Eder had been playing in Berlin since 2023 after stints at Red Bull Munich and Düsseldorfer EG. He played 27 games for the Germany national team. The German ice hockey league (DEL) will hold a minute's silence in honour of Eder before kick-off in this week's games. "We remember the many funny, beautiful and special moments we were able to experience with Tobi and say goodbye with great gratitude for the time we spent together," the DEL said in a statement.
