Tim Stützle is joining the German team at the IIHF World Championship, the German Ice Hockey Association announced on Friday night.
'Immediately after the end of his NHL season, Tim publicly stated that he would like to join us,' said Christian Künast, manager of the German team. 'We are pleased that we have now calmly resolved all the formalities and that he will be joining us. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ottawa Senators, from whom we have already received approval for his participation, and we look forward to Tim's arrival here in Herning.'

'We are, of course, delighted that Tim, a very high-quality player, is joining us and will further strengthen our team for the tournament,' said German coach Harold Kreis. 'He demonstrated his strengths in the past NHL season and delivered a great season with the Senators. We had a very good and detailed conversation during our NHL trip, during which he reiterated his intention to join us. It's all the more pleasing that his participation in the World Championship is now working out.'
Stützle becomes the fourth active NHLer on this year's German team (see roster below).
To make room for Stützle, Marcel Noebels, a former Philadelphia Flyers prospect who is a veteran of eight World Championships and a silver medalist from the 2018 Winter Olympics, was cut from the team. That reduces the contingent on the team from DEL champion Eisbären Berlin to six.

Columbus Blue Jackets sign restricted free agent Mikael Pyyhtia to one-year contract

One of the Blue Jackets' last two unsigned free agents has agreed to terms on a new contract. Mikael Pyyhtia, a 23-year old depth forward who has played parts of the past three seasons in Columbus, will continue his time with the Blue Jackets after signing a one-year, two-way NHL/AHL contract Aug. 13 worth $775,000 at the NHL level, $100,000 with the AHL's Cleveland Monsters and guarantees a $140,000 minimum salary. Nicknamed "Tuna" by teammates who struggle with the Finnish pronunciation of his last name, Pyyhtia contributed four goals, three assists and seven points while posting a -11 plus/minus in 47 games last season in his most extensive NHL action. He totaled 3-13-16 with a +4 for Cleveland in 28 AHL games. Pyyhtia also chipped in an assist during six playoff games for the Monsters. Defenseman Daemon Hunt is now the lone RFA without a new deal. Hunt, 23, has 13 NHL games under his belt but hasn't played for the Blue Jackets since they acquired him as part of the trade that sent David Jiricek to the Minnesota Wild. Chelsea Have Set Their Sights On This Bundesliga Defender: Should Maresca Get Him On Board?

In a recent report, Fichajes revealed that Chelsea have set their sights on Bayer 04 Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie this summer. It has been stated that the Blues are eyeing a move to bring the Ecuadorian centre-back to Stamford Bridge in this transfer window. Hincapie's Impressive Form In German Football Hincapie enjoyed a good run of form at the German club in the previous campaign when he put in a series of impressive displays for them in the final third. The Ecuadorian talent took part in 45 matches for Bayer 04 Leverkusen last season, scoring three goals and earning two assists in multiple competitions. The 23-year-old gave a good account of himself on the defensive end of the field as he made 52 tackles, 40 blocks and 32 interceptions in the Bundesliga. He was even accurate with his ball distribution after completing 87.9% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via His current contract at the German club will run out in the summer of 2029. Hence, it won't be easy for Chelsea to get a deal done for him on the cheap in this transfer window. GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR – JUNE 05: Piero Hincapié of Ecuador reacts during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier match between Ecuador and Brazil at Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo on June 05, 2025 in Guayaquil, Ecuador. (Photo by) Should Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca Get Hincapie On Board? Hincapie is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to make some timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot. The Ecuadorian sensation excels at playing his way out from the back. Hincapie is primarily a centre-back but can also play as a left-back or as a left-sided wide player if needed. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if the Blues manage to snap him up this month. We can expect Hincapie to add more bite and steel to Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca's defence. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the West London club this season. At 23, Hincapie has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a good choice for the Blues to consider this summer. All in all, Maresca should think about going all out to get him on board before the end of this transfer period.

The home of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning renamed Benchmark International Arena

(AP) — The home of the Tampa Bay Lightning has a new name, Benchmark International Arena, after the NHL team unveiled a multiyear agreement Wednesday with the mergers and acquisitions company. The change takes effect immediately. The building that opened in 1996 had been known as Amalie Arena since 2014, and it was the site of the Lightning hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2021 for their second of back-to-back championships. Financial terms were not disclosed. Benchmark International and Vinik Sports Group, which owns the Lightning, said their partnership includes more than $3 million in nonprofit contributions to benefit the area.
