Teen trio arrested after stolen vehicle pursuit through San Diego County
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A stolen vehicle pursuit through San Diego County came to a dramatic end early Sunday morning, resulting in the arrest of three teenagers, authorities confirmed. According to the El Cajon Police Department, the situation unfolded around 1:40 a.m. when the police received an Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) notification regarding a stolen vehicle. Officers quickly located the car and attempted to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop and led police on a high-speed chase. Due to the dangerous speed at which the vehicle was traveling, authorities said a decision was made to terminate the pursuit. However, the situation took a turn when a sheriff's helicopter began tracking the vehicle. For nearly an hour, the helicopter monitored the car as it made its way through various areas of San Diego County, police said. Eventually, the driver lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a wooden pole on Sweetwater Road in Chula Vista. The driver, who was unable to exit the car through the driver's side, attempted to flee through the passenger door but was arrested shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, the two passengers ran away, but they were tracked by the helicopter team and apprehended a short time later. All three teenagers, whose identities have not been released due to their age, were arrested on charges of auto theft and possession of stolen property. The driver of the vehicle also faces an additional charge of evading arrest with wanton disregard for safety. Two of the juveniles were booked into Juvenile Hall, including the driver and one passenger with a prior criminal history. The third passenger was released into the custody of a parent. The investigation into the stolen vehicle and its occupants is still ongoing. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the El Cajon Police Department at (619) 579-3311.
