Man arrested for stealing pipelines from Trichy UGD project

Trichy: Trichy city police have arrested a 24-year-old man for stealing underground drainage (UGD) pipelines installed under Phase III of the Trichy Corporation's ongoing UGD project. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused, identified as M Vasudevan from Keezha Panjapur, was found in possession of around 100 kg of high-grade pipelines, valued at approximately ₹1 lakh. According to a complaint filed by Elangovan, project in-charge for the contracting firm implementing the UGD network, the thefts occurred near the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Panjapur. Since the new network has not yet been commissioned, the pipes remained exposed at various installation sites—making them vulnerable to theft. Police investigations revealed that Vasudevan had been systematically digging up and stealing the pipes since September 2024, intending to sell them to scrap dealers. He was caught red-handed while transporting the stolen materials. "We recovered about 100 kg of UGD pipelines stocked at different locations," an investigating officer said. The accused was remanded in judicial custody on Saturday. Police have stepped up surveillance in project areas, especially those where the UGD system is still under construction, to prevent further incidents.

"When BJP enters any issue, they talk nonsense": DMK's Elangovan on Kamal Hasan language row

Chennai [Tamil Nadu], May 28 (ANI): Acknowledging that a language's credit is based on how it is being used and not how it was born in the first place, DMK Spokesperson TKS Elangovan on Wednesday criticised the BJP for stirring controversy over actor Kamal Haasan's reported statement 'Kannada is born out of Tamil,' accusing the party of creating trouble and dividing people by misrepresenting historical references as insults. Elangovan defended Haasan, arguing that his comment was likely a historical citation rather than a personal opinion, and emphasised that the focus should be on a language's usage and impact rather than its origins. 'When the BJP enters into any issue, they will talk all nonsense... Kamal Haasan might have read and quoted some historical facts. It is not his finding. He might have taken his source from history, but this does not mean that he is insulting Kannadam,' the DMK spokesperson said. 'I can quote one thing... English is a language spoken all over the world, but the first English literature was published in the 13th century... When we say that English is a newborn language, it does not mean it is an insult to English... More than half of the population speaks, reads, and uses English... That is the credit for language; when it is born, that's not the issue. How it is used is what matters. It is not Kamal Haasan's view. He might have quoted from history... BJP's role is to create trouble among people. They want to divide people, break people. BJP is not a party for the sake of the people... Nobody is against Kannada,' Elangovan added. The controversy erupted after Haasan's reported remarks at an event that prompted a sharp response from BJP Karnataka State President Vijayendra Yediyurappa, who demanded an apology, labelling the statement an insult to Kannada and the self-respect of 6.5 crore Kannadigas. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP Vice-President Narayanan Thirupathy also slammed Hasan on his reported remarks, stating, 'This particular person, Mr Kamal Haasan, has always been acting smart. One should understand; one should know what he is talking about. Second, it is a sensitive issue. Language is life; language is mother, so you can't belittle it.'(ANI)

Salem City Police issue summons to Periyar varsity V-C to appear for investigation

The Salem City Police have issued a summons to Periyar University Vice-Chancellor R. Jagannathan to appear at the Suramangalam Assistant Commissioner's office on Friday. The summons to appear for inquiry has been issued for the same day the Tamil Nadu Governor is conducting V-Cs' conference in Ooty. Meanwhile, the two-day Vice-Chancellors' conference will begin in Ooty on Friday, which will be inaugurated by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and presided over by Governor R.N. Ravi. Legal advisor of Periyar University Employees Union I. Elangovan in a complaint lodged with the Salem City Police on December 26, 2023, said that Mr. Jagannathan, registrar (full additional charge) K. Thangavel, and two professors started a non-government company, Periyar University Technology Entrepreneurship and Research (PUTER) Foundation, in their personal capacities, at university's expense, which created a loss to the university and the government. On the same day, while Mr. Elangovan met the Vice-Chancellor at his office, the V-C allegedly made casteist remarks against Mr. Elangovan. He also lodged a complaint in this regard with the Karuppur police, and the police registered cases against the V-C under Sections 294 (b), 120 (B), 420, 468, 409, 511, and 506 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code and under Sections 3 (1) (r) and 3 (1) (s) of the SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and arrested the V-C on the same day, and later released him on bail. The VC moved the Madras High Court to quash this FIR registered against him. On April 4, 2025, the Madras High Court refused to quash this case. Similarly, the judgment was reserved by the Madras High Court in the case filed by the police to cancel the bail given to Mr. Jagannathan. Police officials, on condition of anonymity, said that based on the Madras High Court direction to complete investigation within 12 weeks, the summons was issued to the V-C. There was no political angle to the issue, officials added. The Vice-Chancellor was not available for comments.

TN Governor's VCs conference sparks fresh row amid Chancellor role tussle

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi has convened a conference of Vice-Chancellors on April 25 and 26 in Udagamandalam (Ooty), Nilgiris district, drawing sharp political reactions from the DMK. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has been invited as the special guest for the event. The move comes amid an ongoing tussle over the Governor's role as Chancellor of state universities -- a position recently curtailed by a Supreme Court ruling. The apex court, in a significant judgment, affirmed that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will serve as the Chancellor of state universities, replacing the Governor in that role. However, Raj Bhavan has clarified that the Governor retains certain powers, including the authority to convene meetings, and contends that the Chief Minister's role is restricted to appointing Vice-Chancellors only. The Governor's decision to go ahead with the Vice-Chancellors' conference has sparked a political storm. DMK leader T.K.S. Elangovan accused the Governor of defying the Supreme Court's verdict and alleged that the BJP's broader intent was to undermine Tamil Nadu's education system. "Even after the Supreme Court's decision, the Governor shows no respect for it," Elangovan said, adding, "The BJP wants to cripple education in Tamil Nadu. Governor R.N. Ravi is blindly pushing this agenda, unaware of the state's political ethos. He continues to indulge in meaningless activities." Calling the Governor a "mischief monger", Elangovan cited former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai's long-standing demand to abolish the post of Governor. "This is the only post in a democracy that doesn't require public support. All one needs is the blessings of the Prime Minister. R.N. Ravi's term ended six months ago, yet he continues. The courts must take note. We will challenge his actions legally." The Supreme Court's recent ruling stripped the Governor of the power to appoint Vice-Chancellors in 18 of 20 state-run universities. In a landmark judgment last week, the court invoked its extraordinary powers under Article 142 to grant 'deemed assent' to 10 amendment bills passed by the DMK government.
