Chennai: DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan on Sunday criticised the Centre on the Goods and Services Tax (GST), alleging the BJP-led government of "pickpocketing" state governments' money. What is this GST? Earlier, they were called commercial taxes, which were totally collected by the states and then spent on the states' welfare. It was the major revenue source for any state, which was taken away by the Indian government. After GST, you (the central govt) collect the tax and give it to the states where they are in power and give very little to Tamil Nadu," Elangovan said. Earlier, on July 1, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the Modi government, terming the GST rolled out by it a "brutal tool of economic injustice and corporate cronyism." The Congress leader alleged that the GST rolled out by the government was designed to "punish the poor, crush MSMEs, undermine states, and benefit a few billionaire friends of Prime Minister Narendra Modi." Live Events "A 'Good and Simple Tax' was promised. Instead, India got a compliance nightmare and a five-slab tax regime that has been amended over 900 times. Even caramel popcorn and cream buns are caught in its web of confusion. The bureaucratic maze favours big corporates who can navigate its loopholes with armies of accountants, while small shopkeepers, MSMEs, and ordinary traders drown in red tape," he said in a post on X. "The GST portal remains a source of daily harassment. MSMEs - India's largest job creators have suffered the most. Over 18 lakh enterprises have shut down since the rollout of GST eight years ago. Citizens now pay GST on everything from tea to health insurance, while corporates enjoy over Rs one lakh crore in tax breaks annually," he added. GST was implemented in 2017 to replace the prevailing complex and fragmented tax structure with a unified system that would simplify compliance, reduce tax cascading, and promote economic integration.

They want Israel's support: DMK slams Centre's silence on Palestine issue
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] June 22 (ANI): DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan has criticised the Centre's silence on the Palestine issue, which he said is 'wrong' accusing the Union Government of shifted its stance to garner support from Israel. Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Elangovan said, 'The Indian Government has supported Palestine earlier and approved it, now they are silent. The policy of the government should be the same, but now they want Israel's support, so they are supporting Israel. Man arrested for stealing pipelines from Trichy UGD project
Trichy: Trichy city police have arrested a 24-year-old man for stealing underground drainage (UGD) pipelines installed under Phase III of the Trichy Corporation's ongoing UGD project. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused, identified as M Vasudevan from Keezha Panjapur, was found in possession of around 100 kg of high-grade pipelines, valued at approximately ₹1 lakh. According to a complaint filed by Elangovan, project in-charge for the contracting firm implementing the UGD network, the thefts occurred near the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Panjapur. Since the new network has not yet been commissioned, the pipes remained exposed at various installation sites—making them vulnerable to theft. Police investigations revealed that Vasudevan had been systematically digging up and stealing the pipes since September 2024, intending to sell them to scrap dealers. He was caught red-handed while transporting the stolen materials. "We recovered about 100 kg of UGD pipelines stocked at different locations," an investigating officer said. The accused was remanded in judicial custody on Saturday. Police have stepped up surveillance in project areas, especially those where the UGD system is still under construction, to prevent further incidents.

"When BJP enters any issue, they talk nonsense": DMK's Elangovan on Kamal Hasan language row
Chennai [Tamil Nadu], May 28 (ANI): Acknowledging that a language's credit is based on how it is being used and not how it was born in the first place, DMK Spokesperson TKS Elangovan on Wednesday criticised the BJP for stirring controversy over actor Kamal Haasan's reported statement 'Kannada is born out of Tamil,' accusing the party of creating trouble and dividing people by misrepresenting historical references as insults. Elangovan defended Haasan, arguing that his comment was likely a historical citation rather than a personal opinion, and emphasised that the focus should be on a language's usage and impact rather than its origins. 'When the BJP enters into any issue, they will talk all nonsense... Kamal Haasan might have read and quoted some historical facts. It is not his finding. He might have taken his source from history, but this does not mean that he is insulting Kannadam,' the DMK spokesperson said. 'I can quote one thing... English is a language spoken all over the world, but the first English literature was published in the 13th century... When we say that English is a newborn language, it does not mean it is an insult to English... More than half of the population speaks, reads, and uses English... That is the credit for language; when it is born, that's not the issue. How it is used is what matters. It is not Kamal Haasan's view. He might have quoted from history... BJP's role is to create trouble among people. They want to divide people, break people. BJP is not a party for the sake of the people... Nobody is against Kannada,' Elangovan added. The controversy erupted after Haasan's reported remarks at an event that prompted a sharp response from BJP Karnataka State President Vijayendra Yediyurappa, who demanded an apology, labelling the statement an insult to Kannada and the self-respect of 6.5 crore Kannadigas. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP Vice-President Narayanan Thirupathy also slammed Hasan on his reported remarks, stating, 'This particular person, Mr Kamal Haasan, has always been acting smart. One should understand; one should know what he is talking about. Second, it is a sensitive issue. Language is life; language is mother, so you can't belittle it.'(ANI)
