Generate Key Takeaways Diana Ross needed no introduction to designer and stylist Ugo Mozie, who created the elaborate coat and train she sported to the Met Gala. Based between Los Angeles and Lagos, Mozie is great friends with the superstar's son Evan, whom he also suited up for the first Monday in May. Mozie, who has also worked with Beyoncé, Justin Bieber and Travis Scott among others, was only 18 when he debuted his first fashion line in 2009. His creations for Ross and her son, as well as for the Met Gala's head chef Kwame Onwuachi were all custom Eleven Sixteen designs. More from WWD Knowing that Diana Ross wanted something to celebrate her family for the Met Gala, Mozie used crystals and embellishment to incorporate the names of her children and grandchildren into the coat and train's trimmings, which were shaped to look like the vines on a tree. The process required four weeks of constant work that involved seamstresses, embroiderers and tailors. 'I like to say that it was a global project because we used some embellishments that were made in Nigeria and the Swarovski crystals were sent from Austria, the coat and train were made in L.A., and the embroidery was made in New York City,' Mozie said. 'When the final creation was presented, it was such a moment of relief for me and my artistry. For someone like her, who has seen everything on the highest possible level, to appreciate and like something that I created was a very beautiful and affirming moment for me.' Ross wore a decades-old gown, according to the designer. 'About 80 percent of her gowns are her own designs that she has collaborated with other designers on that she has done,' Mozie said. The designer was surprised to see the Grammy winner had added a hat to her red-carpet look. It was a piece he had designed last year for her 80th birthday party. 'It just went with the theme [in honor of 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style'] so well that she wore it for this event as well,' Mozie said. Mozie is also a style director for Hugo Boss, helping to style celebrities for the company's fashion shows — and its Met Gala celebrity guests — and he has styled ad campaigns. Asked about Ross' reputation for being particular, Mozie said, 'She is someone who has been exposed to so much in this world, that she chooses not to settle for anything less than the best that life has to offer. I can only be inspired by that.' Best of WWD Sign up for WWD's Newsletter. For the latest news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

8 details you might have missed from the 2025 Met Gala red carpet

Venus Williams looked glamorous in green, and her earrings subtly paid tribute to her career as an athlete. Williams looked cool and comfortable in her green Lacoste ensemble. It included a collared shirt, a pleated miniskirt, and an oversize coat with thick beading across its lapels and sleeves. So, you might have missed her small diamond earrings, which were shaped like tennis balls. Diana Ross wore an old Hollywood gown that paid tribute to her family members. Her custom white gown from Eleven Sixteen featured a massive 18-foot train that covered the Metropolitan Museum steps. It was glamorous, theatrical, and quietly meaningful. On the red carpet, she described it to Vogue as "a forever family" gown. "It has the names of all my children and my eight grandchildren," she said. "Everybody's name is embroidered." Colman Domingo's cape wasn't just regal. It was inspired by iconic figures of the past. Speaking with GQ while getting ready for the Met Gala, Domingo said he always imagined himself wearing blue at the 2025 event. Then Monica L. Miller, who helped curate this year's Costume Institute exhibit, told the actor that one of the first dandies was a freed slave who dreamed of dancing in "blue superfine wool." "I literally almost stumbled," Domingo told the publication. "I said, 'He named a color? That's the color I want to wear!'" He worked with Valentino to create his ensemble, which included a royal-blue cape with a bedazzled chest piece. André Leon Talley inspired its draping, while its sparkling details represented the jewelry and architecture of the Moors and other North African people. Teyana Taylor's dramatic jacket had song lyrics pressed into its velvet. The statement piece of her custom Marc Jacobs ensemble was a thick red coat with sharp shoulder pads, pleated draping, and rose embellishments. Less flashy were its nods to her song "Rose in Harlem." The phrases "Harlem rose" and "rose out of the concrete" were stamped into velvet pieces that flowed on each side of the jacket. Priyanka Chopra Jonas made jewelry history. Chopra Jonas is a Bvlgari ambassador, so she had the privilege of unveiling a new piece — a diamond necklace with a massive emerald charm — from the jewelry brand at the 2025 Met Gala. In doing so, she also made history as the first to wear this rare gem, which weighs 241.06 carats and is the largest faceted stone ever set by Bvlgari. Maluma wore a green watch that was equally flashy and expensive. Maluma sported an emerald-encrusted watch called the Emerald Billionaire III to complement his blue and green suit from Willy Chavarria. The timepiece's design was eye-catching, and it was also highly valuable. Jacob & Co., the brand behind the accessory, said it retails for $5 million. Kerry Washington's ensemble was more daring than you might have realized. Not only was her custom Simkhai skirt see-through, revealing her undergarments, but its blazer top was also backless. The cream-colored piece had a circle cutout that was only visible when she turned around. It was also enhanced with a diamond necklace that draped down her back. Zendaya and Anna Sawai wore white outfits that were extremely similar. Zendaya hit the red carpet first in a white ensemble from Louis Vuitton. It was tailored perfectly, from its blazer to its bell-bottom pants, and accessorized just as well with a tie and hat. So, it was a little surprising to see Anna Sawai show up later in a nearly identical outfit. The main difference was that the Japanese actor's suit was more cream-colored and tailored with a looser fit.
