POLICE NEWS: Two injured in chain-reaction crash in Goshen
A chain-reaction crash on U.S. 33 at Madison Street injured two people at 3:58 p.m. Tuesday. According to a report from Goshen police, a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Raul Velez, 52, Goshen, was stopped in traffic on U.S. 33 waiting to turn left when it was rear ended by a 2011 GMC Sierra pickup truck. The driver of the truck Richard Leming, 71, Goshen, apparently had a diabetic episode at the time, Goshen paramedics told police. The impact between the two trucks pushed the Silverado into the back of a stopped 2009 Ford Edge driven by Jodi Duncan, 41, Goshen, who was also stopped waiting to turn left. She was not injured. Leming suffered a laceration to the back of his left hand, a minor laceration to the top of his head and pain from his seatbelt. Velez had pain to the back of his head. Both men were taken to Goshen Hospital for treatment. HIT-AND-RUN A 77-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 2:55 p.m. Tuesday that he was crashed into near Kercher Road and Messick Drive. SEX CRIME A man reported to Elkhart County deputies on Monday that his 15-year-old sister-in-law was threatened by another teen to release nude photos. It was later discovered the photos had allegedly been sent to other teens via SnapChat. CHILD ABUSE The Department of Child Services requested that the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office complete a standby for a DCS case about abuse of a child on Tuesday. THEFT A 26-year-old man and 33-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 11:32 a.m. Tuesday someone taking medication from the breakroom of Keystone 702, 2525 Linden Drive. OFFICERS REPORT A woman reported to Goshen police on Tuesday that someone she knew was taking her 15-year-old to be a tattoo, causing her child to be incorrigible. FRAUD A 42-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between April 1-28 fraud was committed.

POLICE NEWS: Elkhart responds to fake bomb threat
A fake bomb threat at Walgreens, 200 S. Nappanee St., Elkhart, had Elkhart police on high alert Friday morning. Dispatch received a call regarding a bomb threat at 9:41 a.m. from a Walgreens employee An unknown caller allegedly told the employee that there was an explosive device in the store and demanded money on gift cards. The Elkhart Police Department dispatched and arrived shortly thereafter. Police, with the assistance of Elkhart County Sheriff's Department deputies, evacuated the store and conducted a search of the building. No devices or suspicious items were located inside the store. Officers determined it was not a credible threat, and that there was no danger to the public. During the investigation, officers made contact with a bicyclist outside the store. The bicyclist was arrested on outstanding and unrelated warrants. Police said they had no information linking the man to the fake bomb threat. Any information may be contributed at 574-295-7070 and anonymous tips may be made at Granger woman hospitalized A man was arrested after he allegedly caused a crash while driving under the influence at 9:26 p.m. Thursday. Austin Martinson, 31, of Elkhart, was traveling south on C.R. 1 at C.R. 10 in a 2022 Jeep Wrangler when police say he disregarded the stop sign and pulled in front of a 2018 Ford Escape driven by April Mast, 51, of Granger. Granger was transported to Elkhart General Hospital with a possible broken hand and complaint of chest and hope pain. Martinson was incarcerated on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and cited for disregarding a stop sign and not having insurance. HIT-AND-RUN • A 47-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday that he was involved in a crash near Ind. 15 and U.S. 20. • A 58-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 5:16 p.m. Wednesday that someone struck his fence and fled the scene in the 13000 block of C.R. 44 in Millersburg. ARRESTS Three people, a 44-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman and a 47-year-old woman were arrested and jailed by Elkhart County deputies at 9:30 p.m. Thursday on charges of possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance after police conducted a search warrant on a home in the 58000 block of River Lake Court and found weed gummies. SEX CRIME The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office began an investigation into a Middlebury Township child molestation at 8:28 p.m. Wednesday. CHILD IN NEED OF SERVICES Elkhart County Sheriff's Office received a report of a child in need of services at 5:43 p.m. Wednesday. BURGLARY A 30-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 6:25 a.m. Friday a possible burglary in the 1500 block of Bashor Road. CRIMINAL MISCHIEF • A 38-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 12:27 p.m. Thursday that her vehicle was damaged in the 200 block of South Main Street. • Concord Cell Phone Repair, 23737 U.S. 33, reported to Elkhart County deputies that a disgruntled customer knocked over a credit card processing machine, breaking it and knocking over a display case around 3:23 p.m. Wednesday. THEFT • An employee of Mercer Transportation reported to Goshen police at 7:40 p.m. Thursday that someone stole a license plate from a semi-trailer while it was parked on the private property of Masterbrand, 1002 Eisenhower Drive North. • A 39-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between 11:30 a.m. April 19 and 7:15 a.m. April 21 someone took her work computer from her vehicle in the 3000 block of Elizabeth Drive in Elkhart. FRAUD • A North Carolina police agency at 10:06 p.m. Thursday requested Goshen police to attempt to make contact with an 80-year-old Goshen woman in reference to identity theft. • A 50-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies that between April 15 and 16 someone committed fraud against his mother. • A 69-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies that between April 5 and April 14 fraud was committed. • A 30-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 5:38 p.m. Wednesday someone scammed him out of $9,900 using a telephone scam.

Culp to announce candidacy for sheriff
GOSHEN — Capt. Mike Culp, a 20-plus-year veteran of the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, will announce his candidacy for sheriff on April 19 on the steps of the courthouse. At the campaign launch rally, Culp will share his vision for the office and his experience, and announce key support from the community, a release from his campaign said. Media, supporters and those wishing to learn more were invited to attend. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. He is the second candidate to seek the office on the Republican ticket in the 2026 election. Capt. Brian Holloman, a 30-year law enforcement veteran, announced his candidacy in January. Culp was born and raised just south of New Paris and is a lifelong resident of Elkhart County. He as over 14 years of division command-level experience as the Patrol Division commander and in his current role as the commander of the Administrative Services Division. In these positions, he has gained extensive management and command experience, preparing him to lead one of the largest sheriff's offices in Indiana, the release states. He has served as the coordinator for the Elkhart County Traffic Safety Partnership for 11 years, managing the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program grant. During his patrol days, he was an operator with the Emergency Services Unit (now a component of Elkhart County Regional SWAT) as a precision marksman, perimeter element leader and later as the overall tactical team commander. Culp has been married to his wife Angela for 24 years. They have three children and are members of Nappanee Missionary Church.

POLICE NEWS: Two injured in three-vehicle crash
Two people were injured in a three-vehicle crash at Ind. 13 and C.R. 10 at 4:06 p.m. Friday. According to a report from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, a 2007 Toyota Rav 4 driven by a 17-year-old Bristol girl, who police only identified as A.M., was northbound on Ind. 13 when it collided with the rear of a stopped 2014 Cadillac Escalade. The Escalade was driven by Terry Costner, 53, Nappanee. It, in turn, collided with the rear of a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport driven by Brett Hoover, 38, New Paris, which was stopped because a vehicle in front of it was turning. The 17-year-old Bristol girl and her passenger, Jennifer Bell, 38, New Paris, both complained of pain. Officers did not state if any medical treatment was required. Neither Hoover nor Costner reported any injuries at the scene. Runaway horse damages vehicle A runaway horse and buggy in the parking lot of Menard's, 1925 Lincolnway East, Goshen, struck a parked truck causing minor damage at 10:42 a.m. Saturday, according to a report from Goshen police. THEFTS • A firearm was stolen from the vehicle of a 30-year-old Goshen woman sometime within the past three weeks while at 61108 C.R. 17, Goshen, according to Goshen police. BATTERY • A 29-year-old Elkhart man reported to Goshen police at 8:45 p.m. Saturday that he was battered by someone he knows int he 300 block of Oakridge Avenue. The victim was injured and required medical treatment, police reported. ARRESTS • A 39-year-old Goshen woman was arrested by Goshen police at 1 a.m. Sunday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated following a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Sedgefield Way. She was taken to the Elkhart County Jail. • A 19-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 1:02 a.m. Saturday on charges of underage drinking and criminal recklessness after officers were called to Brookside Manor, 61108 C.R. 17, to investigate the sound of gunfire.
