Movies to see this week: 'The Doors,' 'North By Northwest,' 'Hundreds of Beavers'

Showcases, a new midnight movie classic, and a chance to see one of the late Val Kilmer's best roles highlight the movie calendar this week. Here are the repertory movies you can catch around the Twin Cities during the week of May 21. Thursday, May 22, at the Walker Art Center The new film from Vera Brunner-Sung and producers Kazua Melissa Vang and Yeej, Bitterroot, has played in town a couple of times already, with screenings during the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival and last week at the Walker Art Center. This week, Vang and Yeej will curate a showcase of local Hmong artists and filmmakers, continuing some of the themes from their acclaimed film, which was shot in Missoula but featured talent from the Twin Cities Hmong community on-screen and in the production. 725 Vineland Pl., Minneapolis (free) Thursday, May 22, at Emagine Willow Creek Biopics on iconic musicians have become commonplace and are often a bit paint-by-numbers. The expected boredom has sullied expectations for the subgenre, even when there are thrilling examples of the form out there, like Oliver Stone's The Doors. The late Val Kilmer fully embodies Jim Morrison, singing, moving, and looking like him. The movie moves quickly at times, tracing Morrison's life from film school up through his death at 27 in Paris. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($12.59) Saturday, May 24, at The Parkway Theater Hundreds of Beavers feels like what might have happened if a silent film director from the 1920s grew up on Adult Swim cartoons and made a Bugs Bunny-inspired comedy. With almost no spoken dialogue, a 19th-century fur trapper is tormented by rabbits, woodpeckers, raccoons, fish, and geese out on the frontier. Worst of all are the beavers, of which, you may have guessed, there are hundreds. With intentionally absurd special effects, he goes to war with a deluge of men in beaver costumes. It's already becoming a midnight movie classic, even though it really only hit theaters in 2024. 4814 Chicago Ave., Minneapolis ($16.73–$20) Sunday, May 25, at Emagine Willow Creek Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Thirst) doesn't pull punches in his films. Rather, he tends to set you up for a few final jabs that can be brutally stunning. That's the case in The Handmaiden, which starts as a dark drama when a Korean girl is hired to be the handmaiden to a rich Japanese heiress. The young woman, however, is actually a thief who has been hired to rob and seduce the heiress. Things get twisted and messy. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($12.59) Monday, May 26, and Wednesday, May 28, at Heights Theater The Hitchcock Festival at the Heights Theater is long gone, but there's still more from the master of suspense coming up. Some of Alfred Hitchcock's most iconic films have scenes that burn so brightly in memory that those scenes stand in for the entirety of the film and can obscure their greatness. North By Northwest can feel that way. Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) gets mistaken for a government agent by a group of spies. It looks like a simple case of mistaken identity, but things go wrong over and over, pulling him deeper and deeper into danger. That includes falling for Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint). It's tense and delightfully frustrating every step of the way, especially if your memory of the movie is a bit obscured by its iconic plane scene. 3951 Central Ave. NE, Columbia Heights ($19–$19.75)More movies screening this week in the Twin Cities: May 21: 28 Days Later (2002) at Alamo Drafthouse, AMC Southdale, Emagine Willow Creek, and Oakdale Cinema May 21: Cooley High (1975) at Alamo Drafthouse May 21: Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) at AMC Inver Grove, Emagine White Bear, Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, St. Michael Cinema, and West End Cinema May 21: Labyrinth (1986) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, and Emagine White Bear May 21: The Wiz (1978) at AMC Southdale, Oakdale Cinema and West End Cinema May 21: Fresa y Chocolate (Strawberry and Chocolate) (1993) at The Main Cinema, part of the Minnesota Cuban Film Festival May 21: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) at Edina Mann Theatres May 21: Pride & Prejudice (2005) at St. Michael Cinema May 21: The Unborn II (1994) at The Trylon Cinema May 21: Moonstruck (1987) at The Parkway Theater May 21: Crossroads (2002) at Alamo Drafthouse May 21: Tall Tales (2025) at The Main Cinema May 22: Hmong Filmmaker Showcase at Walker Art Center May 22: Making Mr. Right (1987) in 35mm at The Trylon Cinem May 22: Phffft (1954) at Heights Theater May 22: Gather (2020) at Minneapolis Institute of Art (free) May 22: The Apartment (1960) at Grandview Theatres May 24: Star Wars: Episode VI - The Return of the Jedi (1983) at The Parkway Theater May 24: Hundreds of Beavers (2022) w/ costume contest at The Parkway Theater May 24: The '80s Action Extravaganza II: The Quickening at The Trylon Cinema May 24: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) midnight screening at The Parkway Theater May 25: Larry McDonough Quintet Jazz Music + Movie Series presents Miles Ahead (2015) at The Parkway Theater May 25: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) at Roxy's Cabaret May 25–27: Young Frankenstein (1978) at The Trylon Cinema May 25: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) at Roxy's Cabaret May 25 and 28: Blazing Saddles (1974) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, and Emagine White Bear May 25: Bree Way: Promise Witness Remembrance at Minneapolis Institute of Art May 25 and 29: Twilight (2008) at Grandview Theatre May 26: Terminating Mystery Movie at Alamo Drafthouse May 26 and 28: Jaws (1975) at Alamo Drafthouse May 26: Silver Bullet (1995) at Emagine Willow Creek May 27: The Vourdalak (2024) at Alamo Drafthouse May 27: The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) in 35mm at The Parkway Theater

Movies to see this week: 'Batman Forever,' 'Ghost Dog,' 'Mermaids'

It's hot enough that movie theater air conditioning is again appealing, if the greatness of Sinners or the below repertory screenings isn't enough. Here's what you can catch at Twin Cities area theaters this week. Thursday, May 15, at Emagine Willow Creek The third entry in a run of four '90s-ish Batman movies, Batman Forever has gotten a lot of flak for its absurdity. Decades later, it deserves a little love. It was deeply over-the-top, leaning into its comic book source material in ways that the Tim Burton-directed movies didn't. The late Val Kilmer's Batman was not a gritty version of the hero. Instead, he plays Bruce Wayne as the straight man to the hammy antics of Tommy Lee Jones' Two-Face and Jim Carrey's Riddler. Enjoy it for the camp, delightful sets, and producing one of Hollywood's best behind-the-scenes stories. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($11.60) Friday, May 16–Sunday, May 18, at The Trylon Cinema One of the delights — I'd argue there are many — of watching Jim Jarmusch movies is that they're usually recognizable as one of his despite his tendency to jump between genres. They're uniformly packed with patient cinematography, idiosyncratic dialogue, and a reverence for film history, whether he's making a western (Dead Man), zombie movie (The Dead Don't Die), vampire movie (Only Lovers Left Alive), or following an assassin (The Limits of Control). Ghost Dog is one of his most successful in that regard. It stars Forest Whitaker as an assassin who thinks of himself as a modern samurai, reading from the Hagakure and deeming himself a retainer of his mod employer. It mashes up conventions of mob and samurai movies. Though, like any of Jarmusch's films, it's more interested in small moments than big action sequences. 2820 E 33rd St., Minneapolis ($8) Friday, May 16—Thursday, May 22, at The Main Cinema This one might not quite fit into how we're typically listing repertory fare, but we're rolling with it since Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted has played in town during Sound Unseen and MSPIFF, where it won an audience award. The week-long run at The Main Cinema includes an MN Made screening on May 15 that will have local directors Isaac Gale and Ryan Olson in attendance. (You may recognize their names as MN-based musicians in bands such as Marijuana Death Squads and Poliça.) The documentary focuses on the titular musician, often described as a cult R&B musician since the '70s, and his tumultuous history, unique home with Moogstar and Guitar Shorty, and, of course, his musical legacy. 115 SE Main St., Minneapolis ($13) Monday, May 19, at Alamo Drafthouse Mermaids is a tender family drama that gets into the subtleties of family dynamics. There's no saccharine finale, but the complex, messy reality of family. Cher stars as Mrs. Flax, a mother of two who moves from city to city, dragging her kids, played by Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, through her ordeals and discarding their struggles in favor of her own. Bob Hoskins plays Cher's flawed and charming suitor. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($15.18) Times and theaters vary (see below) It's a big week for fans of L. Frank Baum's Oz. The Wizard of Oz (1939) is playing at a few Emagine theaters. Emagine White Bear is also bringing Wicked (2024) back to the big screen. (It's currently streaming on Peacock, too.) Then, The Wiz (1978) is playing on Sunday and Tuesday at AMC's Rosedale and Southdale outposts, as well as Emagine Eagan, Oakdale Cinema, and West End movies screening this week: May 14: The Wizard of Oz (1939) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, and Emagine White Bear (Wicked is also playing) May 14: Fight Club (1999) at The Parkway Theater May 14: Before Sunrise (1995) at Edina Mann Theatres May 14: Kingdom of Heaven (2005) director's cut at AMC Eden Prairie, AMC Rosedale, AMC Southdale, Emagine Eagan, and Oakdale Cinema May 14: We Are Fugazi From Washington D.C. (2023) at The Trylon Cinema May 14: Una Noche con los Rolling Stones (A Night with the Rolling Stones) (2023) at The Main Cinema, part of the Minnesota Cuban Film Festival May 14: Ma (2019) at AMC Rosedale, AMC Southdale, Oakdale Cinema, and West End Cinema May 14, 16, and 18–19: Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train (2021) at Alamo Drafthouse, AMC Coon Rapids, AMC Rosedale, AMC Southdale, Emagine Willow Creek, Oakdale Cinema (also May 17), and West End Cinema May 14–21: Pride and Prejudice (2005) at St. Michael Cinema May 15: Ratatouille (2007) at Taste the Movies May 15: True Romance (1993) at Grandview Theatre May 15: It Should Happen to You (1954) at Heights Theater May 15: 'Bone Saw Is Ready' (2025) at The Trylon Cinema May 15: Batman Forever (1995) at Emagine Willow Creek May 16: Toy Story (1995) at Taste the Movies May 16–18: Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai (1999) at The Trylon Cinema May 16: Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted (2024) at the Main Cinema May 16–17: Bitterroot (2024) at Walker Art Center May 17: Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) at The Parkway Theater May 17 and 20: Dog Day Afternoon (1975) at Alamo Drafthouse May 16–17 and 21: "Tall Tales" (2025) at The Main Cinema May 17–21: Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) at AMC Eden Prairie, AMC Coon Rapids, AMC Inver Grove Heights, AMC Rosedale, Emagine Eagan (not May 21), Emagine Lakeville (not May 21), Emagine White Bear, Emagine Willow Creek (not May 21), Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, Southbridge Crossing Cinema (not May 21), St. Michael Cinema, and West End Cinema May 17–18 and 21: Labyrinth (1986) at Emagine Eagan (not May 17), Emagine Lakeville, and Emagine White Bear May 18–19: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, and West End Cinema May 18 and 20: The Apartment (1960) at Grandview Theatre May 18: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) at Audrey Rose Vintage May 18: Cooley High (1975) at Alamo Drafthouse May 18–20: The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) at The Trylon Cinema May 18 and 20: The Wiz (1978) at AMC Rosedale, AMC Southdale, Emagine Eagan, Oakdale Cinema, and West End Cinema May 19: Talk to Me (2023) at Alamo Drafthouse May 19: Mermaids (1990) at Alamo Drafthouse May 19: Anchors Aweigh (1945) at Heights Theater May 19: Alone in the Dark (1982) at Emagine Willow Creek May 20: Constantine (2005) at Alamo Drafthouse

It's just under a week until the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) starts at The Main Cinema, but a few preview screenings are happening this week for anyone looking to get a jump on the fest. Outside of the fest previews, there are rarely screened exploitation films, modern classics, and the continuation of the Hitchcock Film Festival. Here are the repertory movies (and festival films) you can catch at movie theaters around the Twin Cities this week. Wednesday, March 26 at Emagine Willow Creek Genre Brain Melt is bringing something a little extra to its screening of Double Agent 73. The movie will be preceded by a Zoom conversation with Lisa Petrucci of Something Weird Video, a boutique home video label that preserves and sells movies that might not otherwise have a home in the transient world of streaming. That mission includes Double Agent 73 and other films by Doris Wishman. Wednesday's feature is an action/exploitation film starring Chesty Morgan that is pretty absurd. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($6) Thursday, March 27 at The Heights Theater The Hitchcock Film Festival continues with a unique film from the master of suspense. Suspicion isn't his standard fare, packed with murder and mystery. It's a tension-building exercise in upsetting expectations as Lina (Joan Fontaine) and Johnnie (Cary Grant) get married without knowing all that much about one another. As it's revealed that Johnnie is a playboy without any money, Lina becomes suspicious of where the money comes from and whether he has nefarious plans for her and his college chum, Beaky (Nigel Bruce). 3951 Central Ave. NE, Columbia Heights ($16–$16.75) Thursday, March 27–Tuesday, April 1 at The Trylon Cinema The Trylon's run through the films of Paul Thomas Anderson is almost at its end. This week, his There Will Be Blood returns to the big screen. Daniel Plainview (an Oscar-winning performance from Daniel Day-Lewis) is a ruthless oil prospector, willing to do absolutely anything to find oceans of black gold. It remains a powerful, disturbing look at greed and American ambition. 2820 E 33rd St., Minneapolis ($8) Friday, March 28 at The Main Cinema While MSPIFF doesn't officially get going until April 2, the MSP Film Society is previewing some festival highlights this week for MSPIFF passholders. Those previews include Julie Keeps Quiet, the story of a 15-year-old tennis phenom (Tessa Van den Broeck) who attempts to keep her focus on the game even as her coach comes under investigation following the suicide of one of his students. Julie wants to become a star, but her silence will have consequences. 115 SE Main St., Minneapolis ($19) Monday, April 1 at Alamo Drafthouse It Follows has become a modern horror classic. After what seemed to be an innocent sexual encounter, Jay (Maika Monroe) can't escape the sense that something is following her. It's a tense and creepy film that takes the form of an urban legend come to life but also has unsettling things to say about youth and innocence. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($11.86)Movie screening in the Twin Cities this week: Mar. 26: Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) at Edina Theatre Mar. 26: 19th Annual Fly Fishing Film Tour at The Parkway Theater Mar. 26: Women's Adventure Film Tour, presented by Fly Fishing Film Tour at The Parkway Theater Mar. 26 and 28–April 2: Princess Mononoke (1997) at AMC Eden Prairie (Mara. 26 only), AMC Rosedale (Not April 2), AMC Southdale, CMX Odyssey IMAX (Mar. 26 only) Mar. 26: Cult Film Collective Secret 16mm Show at The Trylon Cinema Mar. 26: Donnie Darko (2001) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, Emagine White Bear, and Emagine Willow Creek Mar. 26: Lost Highway (1997) at Alamo Drafthouse Mar. 27: Inland Empire (2006) at Emagine Willow Creek Mar. 27 and 30: The Room (2003) at Grandview Theatre Mar. 27, April 6, and 13: The Hidden Sound of Tango (2023) at The Main Cinema, a preview of MSPIFF44 Mar. 27–April 1: There Will Be Blood (2007) at The Trylon Cinema Mar. 28–31 and April 2: Mulholland Dr. (2001) at Alamo Drafthouse Mar. 28 and April 9–10: Julie Keeps Quiet (2024) at The Main Cinema, a preview of MSPIFF44 Mar. 29: Barbie (2023) at Minneapolis Institute of Art Mar. 29: Vive L'Amour (1994) at Walker Art Center Mar. 29–30: The Mummy (1999) at Emagine Eagan (Mar. 30 only), Emagine Lakeville, Emagine White Bear, and Emagine Willow Creek Mar. 29: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) midnight screening at The Parkway Theater Mar. 29, April 4, and 7: Bushido (2024) at The Main Cinema, a preview of MSPIFF44 Mar. 30, April 6, and 8: Meeting with Pol Pot (2024) at The Main Cinema and Edina Theatres, part of MSPIFF44 Mar. 30: Chuck Chuck Baby (2023) at Emagine Willow Creek Mar. 30–31: Grease (1978) at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, Rosemount Cinema, and West End Cinema Mar. 30 and April 3: Inland Empire (2006) at Alamo Drafthouse Mar. 30: Napoleon Dynamite (2004) at Roxy's Cabaret Mar. 31: Licorice Pizza (2021) at The Heights Theater Mar. 31: The Velvet Vampire (1971) at Emagine Willow Creek Mar. 31: Mystery Machine at Alamo Drafthouse

Movies to see this week: Turtles, 'Tigers Are Not Afraid,' 'Donnie Darko'

From the sewers to Versailles, falling airplanes to floating bodies, the film calendar in the Twin Cities is full of classics this week. (Let's interpret "classic" pretty broadly here because I don't want emails about how absurd it is to put Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the same realm as Sunset Boulevard.) Spring is coming, but it's still cold enough that you'll want to spend some time inside. Here are the repertory movie screenings worth a stop at the theater this week. Wednesday, March 19 at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, Emagine White Bear, and Emagine Willow Creek Films like Sunset Boulevard and The Godfather wind up in repertory series with relative frequency. However, it's probably less common to see the turtles back on the big screen. (At least, it's not often you get to see their early '90s incarnation.) Indulge in its deluge of pizza jokes and '90s slang, whether you unironically love the movie or feel it fits snugly into the "so bad it's good" category. (A reminder for the latter group: We didn't get the timeless collaboration between mutant turtles and Vanilla Ice until the sequel.) Various locations ($10.60) Monday, March 24 at Heights Theater Sunset Boulevard just won't age. Despite being 75 years old, it's still haunting, funny, and tense, right from the opening voiceover when Joe Gillis (William Holden) is seen floating face down in a pool. "You see, the body of a young man was found floating in the pool of her mansion with two shots in his back and one in his stomach. Nobody important, really. Just a movie writer with a couple of 'B' pictures to his credit." The final writing collaboration between director Billy Wilder and screenwriter Charles Brackett might have been their best. 3951 Central Ave. NE, Columbia Heights ($16–$16.75) Monday, March 24 at Emagine Willow Creek Issa López's film doesn't neatly fit into any single genre. It's a crime thriller. It's a fairy tale. It's horror. It's fantasy. More importantly, if you're considering seeing it for the first time, it's just good. A group of kids navigate living amid the everyday violence and horrors of the drug cartels in their city. It's thrilling and fantastical, but Tigers Are Not Afraid (titled Vuelven in Mexico) isn't light viewing. Under the creatures and tension sits painful truth. 3951 Central Ave. NE, Columbia Heights ($7.60) Sunday, March 23 at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, Emagine White Bear, and Emagine Willow Creek Is there a movie that more perfectly captures the zeitgeist of early aughts indie films? (For a certain dorm-room poster, mind-bending thread of that era, Donnie Darko is a good representative. Another thread might be more accurately represented by Wes Anderson or Sofia Coppola's whimsy. Oh, and then there's Andrew Bujalski's... I'm getting off track.) After a plane falls from the sky, Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) has visions of a giant rabbit that tells him to do things. Naturally, it's not good things. The creepy rabbit with teeth and deep voice isn't benevolent. Various locations ($12.60) Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 22 at Alamo Drafthouse Coppola's offbeat retelling of Marie Antoinette's life feels well-suited for a revisit. (Because Gang of Four are on their farewell tour and coming to Minneapolis. What did you think I meant?) The stylish film follows Marie, played by Kristen Dunst, from her marriage to Louis XVI to her time in court as a teenage queen. It also gets to that other part. You know, the whole "let them eat cake," fall of Versailles, chop chop thing, if only in a vague way that never actually shows her bloody demise. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($13)Movies screening in the Twin Cities this week: Mar. 19: Showgirls (1995) at Edina Theatre Mar. 19: Shark Exorcist (2015) at The Trylon Cinema Mar. 19: Women's Adventure Film Tour 2025 at Riverview Theater Mar. 19: Spring Breakers (2012) at AMC Eden Prairie, AMC Southdale, and CMX Odyssey Mar. 19: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) at Alamo Drafthouse Mar. 19: Wild at Heart (1990) at Alamo Drafthouse Mar. 19–20: Hop (2011) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine East Bethel, Emagine Lakeville, Emagine White Bear, and Emagine Willow Creek Mar. 20: Elvis: That's the Way It Is (1920-2001) at The Heights Theater Mar. 20: Mulholland Drive (2001) at Emagine Willow Creek Mar. 20: Rad Day 2025 at AMC Eden Prairie, AMC Southdale, Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, Emagine White Bear, Emagine Willow Creek, Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, Southbridge Cross Cinema, St. Michael Cinema, and West End Cinema Mar. 20 and 23: House (1977) at Grandview Theatre Mar. 20: Boom: A Film About the Sonics (2018) at Cloudland Theater Mar. 21: Luca (2021) at Emagine White Bear Mar. 21 and 23–25: Lost Highway (1997) at Alamo Drafthouse Mar. 21–25: Phantom Thread (2017) at The Trylon Cinema Mar. 22: "Cinema Is of the Mind Anyway," films by Jordan Lord and Tiffany Sia at Walker Art Center Mar. 22: Middle School Movie Club: Belle (2021) at Walker Art Center Mar. 23: Spaceballs (1987) at Audrey Rose Vintage Mar. 23–24: The Godfather (1972) at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, Rosemount Cinema, and West End Cinema Mar. 23: The Princess Bride (1987) at Roxy's Cabaret Mar. 24: Bob Trevino Likes It (2024) at The Main Cinema Mar. 25: Catacomb Cinema Club at Bryant Lake Bowl Mar. 25: Girls Town (1996) at Alamo Drafthouse

Movies to see this week: '42,' 'Do the Right Thing,' 'Blue Velvet'

It's a great week for movie lovers, with classics like Do the Right Thing returning to theaters. There's also the continuation of The Film Noir Festival, a bevy of Black History Month screenings, and more David Lynch. Here are movies you shouldn't miss at Twin Cities theaters this week. Sunday, Feb. 23 at Oakdale Cinema and West End Cinema Spike Lee's classic is part of Marcus Theatres' series of Black History Month screenings. Though you don't really need an excuse to see what's probably Lee's best film. He wrote, directed, and stars in movie about rising tensions in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood on a smolderingly hot day. The bigotry endured by residents simmers until it hits a violent boil. 5677 Hadley Ave. N, Oakdale; 1625 West End Blvd., St. Louis Park ($8.42) Thursday, Feb. 20 at Emagine Willow Creek, and Monday, Feb. 24 at Heights Theater There are a lot of David Lynch films hitting screens this month as fans celebrate his incredible life. Lynch died in January, but his legacy is clearly alive and well. (Wild at Heart will also screen this week at the Grandview Theatre.) While the plot may be more straightforward than some of his films, Blue Velvet isn't an easy watch. Kyle MacLachlan stars as a young man who can't resist prodding around the mystery behind a severed ear he finds in a field. While he's falling in love with Sandy (Laura Dern), he's become infatuated with Dorothy (Isabella Rossellini), an older singer tied up with the dangerous gangster Frank (Dennis Hopper). It sounds like a noir, but it's much, much darker than that. 9900 Shelard Pkwy, Plymouth ($11.60); 3951 Central Ave. NE, Columbia Heights (sold out) Thursday, Feb. 20 at Heights Theater The Film Noir Fetival continues this week as Bart (John Dahl) and Annie (Peggy Cummins) showcase their love of guns, money, and thrills. Its famous three-minute single shot of a heist was shot in at a real bank with real locals who had no idea that a movie was being made. 3951 Central Ave. NE, Columbia Heights ($12.75) Monday, Feb. 24 at Bloomington 13 at Mall of America You can certainly make the case that 42 is a little conventional, a little flat. That'd be fair. It's also fair to say that the straightforward biopic formula works just fine for the movie about Jackie Robinson breaking through into Major League Baseball. It is, you may have heard, a pretty remarkable story and Robinson was a pretty remarkable human being. The movie maybe undersells how hard it was for Robinson, who faced racist hate in the streets, from fans in the stands, from the management of other teams, from the hotels and restaurants where his team ate and slept, from opponents who could try to bean him when he was at the plate, and even from his own teammates. It's one of the many remarkable performances given by Chadwick Boseman, who is excellent as Robinson. 401 South Ave., Bloomington ($5) Monday, Feb. 24 at Emagine Willow Creek Song Kang-ho, one of South Korea's most celebrated actors with a talent for bringing humor to serious stories, reunited with director Park Chan-wook for this atypical vampire story. (They worked together in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, the underrated follow-up to Park's classic, Oldboy.) He stars as a priest who is infected with something that turns him into a vampire during a failed experiment.
