Movies to see this week: 'Batman Forever,' 'Ghost Dog,' 'Mermaids'

It's hot enough that movie theater air conditioning is again appealing, if the greatness of Sinners or the below repertory screenings isn't enough.
Here's what you can catch at Twin Cities area theaters this week.
Thursday, May 15, at Emagine Willow Creek
The third entry in a run of four '90s-ish Batman movies, Batman Forever has gotten a lot of flak for its absurdity. Decades later, it deserves a little love. It was deeply over-the-top, leaning into its comic book source material in ways that the Tim Burton-directed movies didn't. The late Val Kilmer's Batman was not a gritty version of the hero. Instead, he plays Bruce Wayne as the straight man to the hammy antics of Tommy Lee Jones' Two-Face and Jim Carrey's Riddler. Enjoy it for the camp, delightful sets, and producing one of Hollywood's best behind-the-scenes stories. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($11.60)
Friday, May 16–Sunday, May 18, at The Trylon Cinema
One of the delights — I'd argue there are many — of watching Jim Jarmusch movies is that they're usually recognizable as one of his despite his tendency to jump between genres. They're uniformly packed with patient cinematography, idiosyncratic dialogue, and a reverence for film history, whether he's making a western (Dead Man), zombie movie (The Dead Don't Die), vampire movie (Only Lovers Left Alive), or following an assassin (The Limits of Control).
Ghost Dog is one of his most successful in that regard. It stars Forest Whitaker as an assassin who thinks of himself as a modern samurai, reading from the Hagakure and deeming himself a retainer of his mod employer. It mashes up conventions of mob and samurai movies. Though, like any of Jarmusch's films, it's more interested in small moments than big action sequences. 2820 E 33rd St., Minneapolis ($8)
Friday, May 16—Thursday, May 22, at The Main Cinema
This one might not quite fit into how we're typically listing repertory fare, but we're rolling with it since Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted has played in town during Sound Unseen and MSPIFF, where it won an audience award.
The week-long run at The Main Cinema includes an MN Made screening on May 15 that will have local directors Isaac Gale and Ryan Olson in attendance. (You may recognize their names as MN-based musicians in bands such as Marijuana Death Squads and Poliça.) The documentary focuses on the titular musician, often described as a cult R&B musician since the '70s, and his tumultuous history, unique home with Moogstar and Guitar Shorty, and, of course, his musical legacy. 115 SE Main St., Minneapolis ($13)
Monday, May 19, at Alamo Drafthouse
Mermaids is a tender family drama that gets into the subtleties of family dynamics. There's no saccharine finale, but the complex, messy reality of family. Cher stars as Mrs. Flax, a mother of two who moves from city to city, dragging her kids, played by Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, through her ordeals and discarding their struggles in favor of her own. Bob Hoskins plays Cher's flawed and charming suitor. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($15.18)
Times and theaters vary (see below)

Sienna Miller's Choice for an Everyday Tote Comes From Gucci's Cruise 2026 Collection

Sienna Miller was spotted in London on Thursday, elevating her casual attire with a statement tote: the Gucci Giglio bag. Gucci Giglio pays homage to the house's Italian roots, as well as a spirit of continuity and reinvention. The tote is crafted with GG canvas and features a capacious design with the Gucci Web trim, made further complete with a detachable pouch. Tote bags serve as a staple accessory piece for casual or business excursions, offering practical use and a stylish statement. Furthermore, tote bags crafted in the canvas style evoke a '90s style sensibility. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was among the high-profile fashion figures who popularized the trend, merging an effortless, quiet luxury sensibility with an elevated aesthetic. Is Lady Gaga's ‘Wednesday' Role Everything It Seems?

When Lady Gaga signed on to Tim Burton's Wednesday for a guest-starring role, fan speculation ramped up in the spooky spheres. The internet seemingly manifested this casting with a TikTok setting the iconic season one scene of Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) at the Rave n' Dance to Lady Gaga's 'Bloody Mary' from her 2011 hit album Born This Way. The moment went viral, and the trend reached the pop star, who performed the dance on her social media before announcing she would be joining the Wednesday cast. BLOODY WEDNESDAY #fyp ♬ original sound – Paul During Netflix's Tudum event, Gaga performed a medley of her dark pop music, complete with an army of Wednesdays to do the dance, while inviting Ortega on stage for a meal of a moment. It really ratcheted up the excitement, but little was known about who Gaga would be portraying. In an official X post, Netflix described her role as Rosaline Rotwood, a 'legendary' teacher at Nevermore Academy. This cryptic detail was also shared: Rosaline Rotwood. Cloaked in mystery with a reputation that precedes her. Our paths will surely cross. Welcome to mayhem @LadyGaga. — Wednesday Addams (@wednesdayaddams) June 1, 2025However, in a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Ortega decided to throw a little signature chaos into the discourse of who Gaga is really playing. 'She's not a teacher,' Ortega revealed. 'She's not. Whatever you heard, it's wrong.' So that brings us to some Gagaspeculation of who Stefani Germanotta might really be playing when season two of Wednesday returns with its second set of episodes. Spoilers below!Wednesday season two has thus far teased many roles Gaga's Rosaline Rotwood, legendary teacher, could potentially step into. Let's break them down: Ophelia Frump: Morticia's missing sister possessed similar powers to Wednesday and was driven mad by them. After finding out what LOIS is—the Willow Hill secret experiments on outcasts to transfer powers to normies—you're led to believe this is probably where Ophelia ended up. At the end you see Wednesday interact with a woman whose identity we're unsure of; she thanks her 'angel' for saving her. It feels purposefully unclear if it's Ophelia or Tyler's mother. I personally don't think it's Ophelia at the end (it's probably Tyler's mom based off the normie vibes), and I hope Gaga will still play the missing Frump sister to Catherine Zeta-Jones' Morticia. They both can sing, so it would be even more fitting. Tyler's Mom: This would be too on the nose, if the woman at the end was Ophelia and not Tyler's mom. Mother Monster playing a monster's mother? Please, no. New ancestral power spirit guide: This can go so many ways. Perhaps Ophelia died and she's going to be Wednesday's guide, whom she meets while in her coma. Or maybe her spirit guide is a former teacher (not current) named Rosaline Rotwood, whom she could meet in her purgatorial bedridden state. Imagine your spirit wandering school halls while in near death? Now, that's hell. Debbie Jelinsky: Okay, this is more joke speculation but it would have been fun to see Gaga as a Debbie Jelinsky type of character, the black widow bride who was iconically played by Joan Cusack in The Addams Family Values. Fester already had a love story with the Willow Hill lunch lady (not played by Gaga), so this is probably not in the cards unless they get Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan to do it in a later season; her impression is dead-on, plus she is in the Netflix family. Wednesday season two part one is currently streaming on Netflix; part two drops September 3. Want more io9 news? Clayface Movie Cast to Include The Social Network Star in Key Role

The cast of the DCU movie is growing. Clayface is a new DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures movie expected to arrive in 2026. Directed by James Watkins, the film will see Tom Rhys Harries play the villainous Batman character of the same name. Who has joined the cast of Clayface? Max Minghella is being eyed for a key role in the Clayface movie, according to Nexus Point News. The outlet reports that Minghella is being looked at to play a character named John, 'a detective and fiancé to Caitlin Bates, who's suspicious of his fiancée's relationship with Matt Hagen/Clayface.' Nexus Point News further reports that Mickey 17's Naomi Ackie has now officially been offered the role of Caitlin, who will be Hagen's love interest and doctor. Minghella is best known for playing Nick Blaine in The Handmaid's Tale, a role that earned him a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2021. He's also recognized for playing Divya Narendra in 2010's The Social Network, while his filmography further includes 2011's The Ides of March, 2013's Horns, 2016's The 9th Life of Louis Drax, 2021's Spiral, and 2022's Babylon. The script for the DCU Clayface movie comes from Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House) and Hossein Amini. James Gunn has previously confirmed that the movie is being made to receive an R-rating. Watkins has previously directed movies such as 2008's Eden Lake, 2012's The Woman in Black, 2016's Bastille Day, and 2024's Speak No Evil, while he additionally helmed the 'Shut Up and Dance' episode of Black Mirror and was a second unit director on 2009's The Descent Part 2. Clayface hits United States theaters on September 11, 2026. Prior to that, the next DCU project will be Peacemaker Season 2, which premieres on HBO Max later this month, while Lanterns and Supergirl are also both coming out in 2026.
