Emergency by Indira was undemocratic: Joshi

Dharwad: Union minister Pralhad Joshi said the 50th year of the dark days of Emergency in India is being observed throughout the country to inform the younger generation about how the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency and ruled for 21 months without constitutional and moral authority. Speaking at the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Sabha and the inauguration of the 50th year of remembrance of the struggle during the Emergency, organised by the BJP at Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha here, he said Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975 and during that time, protests were suppressed, many protesters including all the leaders of opposition parties were imprisoned, and several people lost their lives, he explained. "Indira Gandhi was accused of misusing her power during the elections by Raj Narain, who took the matter to court. Justice HR Khanna of the Allahabad High Court had delivered the verdict in favour of Raj Narain and had declared Indira's election null and void. That judgement copy is not available anymore," he added. "Jawaharlal Nehru made the first constitutional amendment. Later, Indira Gandhi made several amendments including to Articles 38, 39, and 42. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ford&Go. High court refuses to stay suspension of KU registrar

Kochi: Kerala high court on Friday refused to stay the suspension order of Kerala University registrar KS Anil Kumar issued by the vice-chancellor (VC) and asked the university to file its response in the case saying the institution seems to have a view different from that of the VC. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The bench of Justice N Nagaresh passed the order on a petition filed by Kumar challenging his suspension and adjourned the matter to Monday for a detailed hearing. VC Mohanan Kunnummal had suspended Kumar on July 2 for allegedly insulting the governor who is also the chancellor of the university in connection with a private event held at the university's Senate Hall in Thiruvananthapuram. The controversy began with a seminar held by Sree Padmanabha Seva Samiti on June 25 to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Emergency in India. Just before the event started, Kumar cancelled earlier permission to use the Senate Hall saying the organizers had broken rules by displaying a picture of Bharat Mata on stage. The governor was the chief guest at the event. Kunnummal later suspended Kumar saying the cancellation was made after the programme had already started with the governor on stage. In his petition, Kumar said students from different political groups had got into a heated exchange and the display of the picture on stage had created a threat of violence. He said he had asked the organizers to take down the picture but they went ahead with the function. As the situation worsened and students allegedly started pushing and assaulting one another he said he had no choice but to cancel the permission. During the hearing, the petitioner cited a report by the university's PRO who had inspected the venue. The report said organizers had broken rules by displaying religious symbols. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The petitioner said a photo of a lady holding a saffron flag was placed prominently at the centre of the stage garlanded and decorated with flowers. He said the image seemed to be that of a Hindu goddess. At this point, the court asked what religious symbol the petitioner claimed to have seen and which photograph displayed by Padmanabha Samiti could provoke communal riots in Kerala. The court said it was unfortunate that the petitioner was describing Bharat Mata as a lady holding a flag. 'VC has no power to suspend registrar' The senior counsel for the petitioner challenged the suspension order saying the VC had no power under the university statute to suspend the registrar. Only the university syndicate can take disciplinary action against senior officials. The counsel said the VC can act only against deputy registrars and those in lower posts. In response, the court said orally that the VC does have the power to suspend but the action must be placed before the syndicate for approval. The bench said the petitioner should not have handled the issue in such a way especially as the governor was present at the programme.

'One Country Didn't Want Reference': Jaishankar Slams Pakistan, Backs Rajnath Singh's SCO Stand

Last Updated: Jaishankar defended India's stance of not signing the joint SCO document, stating terrorism cannot be sidelined in an organisation founded to combat it. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday slammed Pakistan, in reference to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh refusing to sign a joint declaration at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in China. Commenting on the development, Jaishankar, referring to Pakistan, said there was one country that did not want a reference to terrorism in the joint SCO document. 'The SCO was formed with the objective of fighting terrorism. When Rajnath Singh went to the Defence Ministers' Meeting and there was a discussion on the outcome document, one country said they do not want a reference to that, the External Affairs Minister said. 'Rajnath Singh's view rightly was, without that reference, that when the main purpose of the organisation is to fight terrorism, and you are not allowing a reference to that, he expressed his unwillingness to accept," he added. 'The SCO runs with unanimity. So Rajnath ji clearly said that if there is no mention of terrorism in the statement, we will not sign it," Jaishankar said, as he spoke in New Delhi on the 50 years of the imposition of the Emergency in India. On Thursday, Rajnath Singh had refused to sign a joint declaration as it did not have any mention of the dastardly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, but mentioned incidents in Pakistan. According to government sources, the Defence Minister did not sign the SCO document as India was not satisfied with the language of the joint document. Addressing the Defence Ministers' Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in China's Qingdao, Rajnath Singh said that there should be no place for double standards regarding terrorism, and member countries of the bloc should not hesitate to criticise nations that indulge in such actions. In his remarks at the meeting, Singh called on members of the SCO to take united and decisive action against terrorism and the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in the possession of non-state actors and terrorist groups. Without explicitly naming Pakistan, Singh noted that peace and prosperity cannot co-exist with terrorism. Singh arrived in Qingdao on Wednesday evening to attend the SCO conclave. Besides India and China, the SCO comprises Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. First Published: June 27, 2025, 12:11 IST

Exhibition in Thiruvananthapuram sheds light on 50 years of Emergency

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Marking 50 years since the declaration of the Emergency in India, the AKG Centre for Research and Studies organised an exhibition on Tuesday that revisited the dark, silenced chapter in the country's democratic history. Titled 'Emergency: 50 Years Since the Semi-Fascist Regime', the exhibition featured a wide collection of rare newspaper clippings, photographs and archival materials from the 1975-77 period. One of the most striking displays was a newspaper clippings of the blank editorial that was published against censorship imposed on the press. Also on display were political cartoons by R K Laxman and others, who used satire to criticise the regime during a time when free expression was under threat. 'There is a pressing need to hold exhibitions and discussions to remind what led to Emergency, because we are living through what feels like an undeclared Emergency. With laws like the UAPA, frequent ED raids, and increasing interference from the central government, efforts to silence the press, dissent, and public voices are intensifying. The raid on NewsClick and other media outlets are examples,' said C N Mohanan, director of AKG Centre for Research and Studies.
