Exhibition in Thiruvananthapuram sheds light on 50 years of Emergency
Titled 'Emergency: 50 Years Since the Semi-Fascist Regime', the exhibition featured a wide collection of rare newspaper clippings, photographs and archival materials from the 1975-77 period. One of the most striking displays was a newspaper clippings of the blank editorial that was published against censorship imposed on the press. Also on display were political cartoons by R K Laxman and others, who used satire to criticise the regime during a time when free expression was under threat.
'There is a pressing need to hold exhibitions and discussions to remind what led to Emergency, because we are living through what feels like an undeclared Emergency. With laws like the UAPA, frequent ED raids, and increasing interference from the central government, efforts to silence the press, dissent, and public voices are intensifying. The raid on NewsClick and other media outlets are examples,' said C N Mohanan, director of AKG Centre for Research and Studies.

ED seizes cash, gold worth Rs 6.8cr from MLA Sail's residence
1 2 Karwar: The officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), seized Rs 1.7 crore in cash and 6.8 kg of gold jewellery and bullion — estimated to be worth around Rs 6.8 crore — during a raid at the residence of Karwar MLA Satish Krishna Sail. In a post on X, the ED stated that search operations were carried out on Aug 13 and 14 across multiple locations, including Karwar, Goa, Mumbai and New Delhi. The raids were conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of an ongoing probe against Satish Sail, other individuals and entities, who had earlier been convicted by the Special Court for MPs and MLAs in Bengaluru, in connection with the illegal export of iron ore fines. During the searches, several incriminating documents, emails, records, among other things, were found. The ED has frozen approximately Rs 14.1 crore held in bank accounts linked to Sail. It can be recalled that an extensive search was carried out by ED officials at Sail's residence at Sadashivagad in Karwar. Sail and his family members were reportedly not present in the house during the search. Nagaland Governor La Ganesan dies in Chennai at 80
Nagaland's sitting governor La Ganesan passed away on Friday, August 15, in Chennai's Apollo Hospital, officials have said. The Nagaland Governor was undergoing treatment when he passed away. He was 80 at the time of his death. Ganesan was undergoing treatment at the ICU of the hospital for the past few days and he died on Friday night, the Kohima Raj Bhavan PRO said. The time of the death of La Ganesan was recorded at 6:23 pm. According to a report by PTI, La ganesan collapsed at his home in Chennai on August 8 and had sustained injuries in the head due to the fall. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors admitted him to the ICU to undergo intensive monitoring and treatment. According to a report by The New Indian Express, Ganesan was rushed from his T Nagar residence in an unconscious state and underwent surgery. The mortal remains of the leader will be placed at his home in T Nagar for the political leaders and others to pay their last respects. Ganesan was appointed the 21st governor of Nagaland on February 12, 2023 and he assumed office on February 20 that year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled La Ganesan's death and remembered him as a 'devout nationalist.' 'Pained by the passing of Nagaland Governor Thiru La. Ganesan Ji. He will be remembered as a devout nationalist, who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. He worked hard to expand the BJP across Tamil Nadu. Before Nagaland, La Ganesan served as the Governor of Manipur from August 2021 to February 2023. He had also been given Additional Charge as Governor of West Bengal from July 2022 to November 2022.

Nagaland Governor and former BJP leader L. Ganesan passes away at 80
L. Ganesan, Governor of Nagaland and former senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, passed away in Chennai on Friday (August 15, 2025) at the age of 80. He had earlier served as the Governor of Manipur and held the additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal. A bachelor, he had recently celebrated his 80th birthday in a grand manner in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin attended the event. A few days ago, Ganesan suffered a fall in the bathroom and sustained head injuries, which led to his demise. A native of Thanjavur district, Ganesan was a passionate admirer of Carnatic music and made it a point of attending the annual Thyagaraja Aradhana in Thiruvaiyaru. His association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) began in his school days, with his family being closely connected to the organisation. 'He was a government employee, working as a Revenue Settlement Inspector, before resigning to become a full-time pracharak of the RSS. He worked primarily in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and rose to become the chief organiser of the RSS during the Emergency,' said sources in the RSS. 'His role in protecting the Hindu interest in Meenakshipuram religious conversions and Mandaikkadu communal riots were well appreciated by the nationalist leaders of yesteryears. His tireless efforts to bring peace and unity among Hindus in the caste nerve centres of Tamil Nadu, such as Puliangudi and Ramanathapuram, bore fruit, leading to harmony among the people,' says the website of the Nagaland Governor's office. In 1991, he was deputed to help build the BJP in Tamil Nadu and subsequently resigned from the RSS as its deputy organising secretary to focus on the party work. He went on to serve as the general secretary and president of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit. At the national level, he held the position of BJP vice-president. He contested twice, albeit unsuccessfully, from the South Chennai Lok Sabha constituency. In 2017, Mr. Ganesan was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh, following the appointment of the then MP, Najma Heptulla, as the Governor of Manipur. Mr. Ganesan also served as the editor of the BJP's Tamil organ Ore Naadu (One Nation) and was the founding president of Pottramarai ('Golden Lotus'), an organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting Tamil scholars across the globe.
