Elm Park star Fleming (20) carded a four-under 69 to share ninth place and head the 16-strong home challenge as Donegan and Foster shot 71s. Maguire struggled to make putts and signed for a one-under 72.

Emma Fleming leads home charge at Irish Open, Leona Maguire five shots behind leader

Leona Maguire carded a one-over 72 that currently leaves her five shots off the pace as round one of the KPMG Women's Irish Open continues at Carton House, with amateur Emma Fleming leading the home challenge. Maguire made birdie at the first and went on to pick up shots at 11 and 18, but sandwiched in between were bogeys on 15 and 16. Fleming, recently crowned Victorian Amateur champion in Australia, carded a 69 to lie on two under, and that has her two shots behind Swiss player Chiara Tamburlini, who leads the way by a shot. Of the other Irish competitors that have finished, Aine Donegan and Anna Foster are one under; Lauren Walsh is two over; Beth Coulter and Olivia Costello are three over, with Rebekah Gardener five over.

Teams selected for European Women's and Girls' Team Championships

Two teams have been selected to represent Ireland at the EGA European Ladies' and Girls' Team Championships, taking place from 8 to 12 July. The women's team will compete at Golf de Chantilly in France, while the girls' team will travel to Slaley Hall in England for their championship. Selected for the women's team are 2024 Curtis Cup and current Vagliano Trophy teammates Beth Coulter (Kirkistown Castle) and Áine Donegan (Lahinch), along with recently crowned Victorian Amateur Champion Emma Fleming (Elm Park). The girls' team includes reigning Flogas Irish Girls' Amateur Open Champion Zoe McLean-Tattan (Romford), Helen Holm Scottish Women's Open Champion Róisín Scanlon (Woburn) and Spanish Amateur runner-up Olivia Costello (Roscommon). Each championship will begin with two rounds of stroke play qualifying, with the best five of six scores counting each day. The top eight teams will advance to match play to compete for the overall title.
