What to watch with your kids: ‘A Minecraft Movie,' ‘Robogobo' and more

Fun adventure has fights, action and some rude language. Based on the popular sandbox game, this live-action adventure unfolds in both the real world and the game universe, focusing on four misfits (played by Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Hansen) who learn to work together when they're pulled into a mysterious portal. Jack Black also stars as Steve — a character fans of the game will recognize. Expect action violence (including sword fights, explosions and villain deaths) and physical comedy, as well as some bullying. Language is largely words like 'stupid,' 'idiot,' 'loser,' 'sucks' and 'butt.' There's not much romance beyond one funny subplot. With themes of teamwork, courage, curiosity and perseverance, the movie should appeal to the game's many tween and teen fans. (101 minutes) Available in theaters. Streaming Animated series thrives on empathy and diversity. Similar to 'Paw Patrol' and 'SuperKitties,' this rescue-team show features a group of animals — a dog, cat, rabbit, turtle and bird — 'powering up' to save the day. The series focuses on themes of teamwork and compassion while emphasizing positive messages and social-emotional learning. The animals face villains from a range of species, including chameleons and hamsters. This sets the scene for dealing with different behaviors and needs, which makes the show unique despite its familiar formula. Our protagonist Dax (voiced by Ja'Siah Young) is a great role model: He's a natural leader who guides the group to work together. The baddies are easy to beat, and while there's some confrontation (like pushing and throwing), no one gets hurt. (18 episodes) Available on Disney+. A wild, ultraviolent quartet of 1980s Oakland crime stories. Set in 1987 Oakland, this anthology dramedy tells four crime stories. The extremely gory violence includes lots of deaths and blood; expect stabbing, slicing, impaling and severing, as well as a body cavity being ripped open, someone exploding into bits and a character being lit on fire. Oral sex is suggested, and the movie includes sexual gestures and sex-related dialogue. Constant profane language includes 'f---,' 'motherf----r,' 's---,' 'a--hole,' 'goddamn,' 'Jesus Christ,' 'b----' and the n-word, plus other slurs. Minor characters smoke something (possibly crack) in a glass pipe, and people are shown snorting cocaine, smoking cigarettes and drinking. Steeped in nostalgia, it's over the top but a lot of fun — especially for viewers who can relate to the time and place. Pedro Pascal headlines the cast. (107 minutes) Available in theaters. Streaming Some violence in engaging detective series. This crime drama follows a puzzle maker (David Mitchell) who impersonates his missing twin brother to infiltrate the Cambridge, England, police force. This quirky, diversely cast series has mostly positive role models who demonstrate teamwork and perseverance. There is some violence: A character lies dead with blood soaking his shirt and a screw piercing his chest, and another character is shown hanging (with only his shoes visible). A teen boy alludes to bullying when discussing being deliberately pushed over. (Six episodes) Available on BritBox. Common Sense Media helps families make smart media choices. Jason Momoa shines in ‘A Minecraft Movie'

Jennifer Coolidge in a scene from "A Minecraft Movie." Kristy Griffin/Associated Press If you've never heard of 'Minecraft' — or its denizens like Creepers, Piglins, Villagers and Endermen — you are in big trouble. Consult with the closest 10-year-old immediately. (I have one and he noticed a sweet nod to the late YouTuber Technoblade, an Easter egg of sorts.) The movie is faithful to the world of the game, while adding some things — orbs and crystals — to aid the plot. But if you come in cold and spot pandas and folks punching through earth, you'll likely side with one human character who says: 'This place makes no sense.' Uncredited/Associated Press The screenplay written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta is as loosey-goosey as you'd expect from five different voices, with a traditional Marvel-style battle at the end fueled by plenty of 'Let's do this!' declarations but with a surprisingly goofball first half. Like countless films before it, 'A Minecraft Movie' is all about the quest to go home, which in this case means navigating zombies, skeletons shooting fire-tipped arrows and a place called The Nether, a perpetually dark hell where horrible creatures mine for gold. For some reason, the ruler there, a piglike witch, has glowing eyes and a British accent. The writers make some 'America's Got Talent' jokes, Black has a few songs — including a bizarre 'Steve's Lava Chicken' — and we spend an inordinate of time focused on Momoa's butt, but it all ends in a dance party. The movie has a 'Dark Crystal'-meets-'Transformers' vibe, a too-subtle message about financial failure and something about friendship. A scene from "A Minecraft Movie." A Minecraft Movie review: Jack Black, Jason Momoa take on iconic world-building video game

3/5 stars Advertisement 'This place makes no sense!' yells Natalie (Emma Myers) in A Minecraft Movie, the balmy new big-screen take on the hugely popular world-building video game. After watching it – assuming you're not familiar with the 300-million selling sensation – you'll probably agree. But that does not mean you will not have a good time. Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge each bring their own brand of comic smarts to this crazed comedy from director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). The story takes place in the Overworld, a pixelated paradise occupied by Steve (Black), a kid who dreamed of building things and found his wish in this bizarre universe. Advertisement After the discovery of something called the Orb of Dominance, Natalie and her brother Henry (Sebastian Hansen) are sucked through a portal into this place, where the normal rules of physics do not apply.

What is the Minecraft update for 2025? Ghast lore, capes and a new live event

With the theatrical release of "A Minecraft Movie" right around the corner on April 4, it seems the team over at Mojang Studios are giving players a new update to the game just in time for the film's release. On Sunday, March 23, the 2025 Minecraft Live took place on the Minecraft YouTube channel and game developer Mojang announced never-before-seen game drops, showed exclusive movie content and even had some celebrity appearances including Emma Myers ("Wednesday") from the upcoming live action Minecraft movie. If you didn't catch Sunday's livestream, here's everything you missed about what's coming to Minecraft in 2025. Minecraft isn't just getting one game drop in 2025. It's getting multiple game drops, according to the recap of the live on More features will be released more frequently in the form of game drops throughout the year and because of that there will be another Minecraft Live show later this year to give even more updates. The first game drop of the year is called "Spring to Life" and it releases to all platforms on Tuesday, March 25. This drop will include warm and cold variants for some of the classic mobs, new ambient features like the glittering firefly bush, falling leaves and whispers of sand in hopes of players making their Overworld travels and builds more immersive. A lot was shared in the Minecraft Live event. Here's a recap of all the updates coming to Minecraft in 2025: New mobs: new warm and cold pig variants, along with a new cow variation. Firefly bush: a new plant block that emits glowing firefly particles. Falling leaf particles: all tree types will have falling leaves. Leaf litter: a new decorative block can be found in forests, dark forests and wooded badlands that can also be used as fuel. Wildflowers: a new flower type that grows in the birch forests, old growth birch forests and meadows that can be used as dye or decor. Ambient sounds: new ambient sounds like howling wind and desert sounds. Loadstone crafting: the crafting recipe for loadstone has changed and now players can find them in ruined portal chests. More game drops throughout the year and more updates coming later with a second Minecraft Live event. Emma Myers, one of the stars of the upcoming "A Minecraft Movie," came to the live to share a new in-game Live Event where players will be able to play mini-games inspired by the movie, including saving Midport village from a piglin attack. The Live Event will take place from Tuesday, March 25, until Monday, April 7, 2025, on all Bedrock Edition platforms. Players will need to complete all the challenges to be awarded an exclusive cape that will unlock in both editions of the game. The second game drop from Minecraft this year will include the dried ghast, a new block that can be found in the Nether. These new ghast blocks can be taken to the Overworld to be rehydrated into a ghastling, which can grow to be happy ghasts, a friendlier version of the ghasts of the Nether. Players can put a harness on their happy ghast, mount it and fly around your world. There's no 1.22 Minecraft update this time around. Instead, players will need to look out for the various game drops happening throughout the year, which will include updates to the game. Meredith G.
