‘Kill me,' suspect pleaded after allegedly shooting Chicago police Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso

In the chaotic moments following the fatal shooting of Chicago police Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso, the alleged shooter yelled to responding officers, according to body camera footage: 'Kill me. Kill me.' But Vásquez Lasso's partner that day, Officer Miguel Enciso, instead used his Taser to subdue Steven Montano, 21, who is charged with first-degree murder and other felonies in the March 1, 2023 slaying. Enciso grew tearful on the witness stand on Wednesday as the trial for Montano resumed at the Leighton Criminal Court Building after jurors heard testimony from seven witnesses on Tuesday. 'As I got closer to the fence, I could see my partner on the ground bleeding from his face,' Enciso said, looking down as he fought to compose himself. Cook County prosecutors on Tuesday opened their case against Montano by introducing jurors to the slain 32-year-old officer, who immigrated from Colombia before joining the police force. He valued the Southwest District he patrolled so much that he bought a house there, they said. On the day he was killed, he woke up early to bid his wife, a flight attendant, goodbye. Montano's defense attorneys, though, pushed back on the first-degree murder charge, arguing that Montano acted rashly in a moment of extreme stress. As the trial resumed Wednesday, jurors viewed more body camera footage of the shooting, as emotional police officers took the stand to describe how they remember that day. Vásquez Lasso and other officers were dispatched to the 5200 block of South Spaulding Avenue on the city's Southwest Side after Montano's girlfriend called 911 to report that he threatened her with a gun, prosecutors said. During the call, Montano grabbed her phone and tried to stop her from calling for help, prosecutors alleged. As police arrived, Montano jumped out of a window, prosecutors said, and was chased by Vásquez Lasso, who had arrived at the scene. As the chase neared a playground, Montano turned toward the officer, prosecutors said, and both fired weapons. Vásquez Lasso hit Montano in the mouth area, and Montano shot the officer in the head, arm and leg. Enciso recounted how he and Vásquez Lasso came to the aid of fellow officers, who were chasing Montano after the domestic-related 911 call. Stuck in traffic, Vásquez Lasso jumped out of the police vehicle and chased after the suspect. Realizing he likely wouldn't get through the traffic shortly before 5 p.m., Enciso parked the car and also left on foot in the direction his partner ran. He soon heard gunshots, he testified, recalling that the shots had different timbres from separate weapons. During cross examination, Assistant Public Defender Brett Balmer asked whether the different gunshots went off 'simultaneously.' 'Yes,' Enciso replied. As another officer performed CPR on Vásquez Lasso, Enciso approached Montano with commands that he said the then-18-year-old ignored. 'He begins to beg me to kill him,' Enciso said. Montano asked why Enciso didn't kill him, the officer testified. Enciso testified that he ordered Montano to 'shut the f*** up.' Montano responded, according to Enciso: 'You shut the f*** up b****. That's why I killed your b**** a** boy.'

Chelsea escape humiliation but Ipswich draw raises worrying issues

Jadon Sancho 's stunning late goal capped a second-half fightback as Chelsea recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge. Enzo Maresca was facing surely the worst defeat of his tenure when Julio Enciso's tap-in and Ben Johnson's header put struggling Ipswich in sight of a famous win that would have kept alive their faint hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier League. Chelsea hit back and reduced the arrears in the first minute after half-time, Marc Cucurella 's presence at the near post forcing an own goal from Axel Tuanzebe, before Sancho sent relief around the ground by curling in his first goal since December. The Blues will still see the result as two points dropped in the race for Champions League qualification, however. Nicolas Jackson struck a post in the eighth minute after being set up by Enzo Fernandez's cut-back, then Noni Madueke brought a near-post save from Alex Palmer following Pedro Neto's neat, deep cross. Ipswich's goalkeeper was alert to fling himself and get two hands on Levi Colwill's close-range header as Chelsea piled on huge early pressure and the visitors struggled to draw breath. And so it was from nowhere that Ipswich went in front. Enciso had scored a stunning 30-yard effort on this ground for Brighton in April 2023 and, though this was a less spectacular finish, it had a similar impact. George Hirst carried the ball forward and moved it wide for Johnson, whose low cross from the right was highly inviting, leaving Enciso to simply put out a foot and guide it past Robert Sanchez. There was then the highly unusual sight of Sanchez shooing his defenders upfield at a goal-kick, bypassing Maresca's preferred build-up play. Sanchez hoofed it long and the ball came straight back at Chelsea, Jack Clarke driving on and finding Enciso, who crossed to the far post where Johnson was waiting to nod home. The flag immediately went up against Enciso, but the new semi-automated offside system intervened and Ipswich were two up. The boos that greeted Chelsea as they left the pitch at half-time were the biggest noise the home fans had mustered to that point, but it was eclipsed 18 seconds into the second half when their team began their fightback. Straight from kick-off Fernandez moved the ball wide on the right to Madueke, who ran it to the byline and pulled back for Cucurella arriving at the near post to shovel it against Tuanzebe and in. Hirst then came within a whisker of restoring the two-goal lead with a brilliant, swinging drive that flashed inches wide before moments later failing to make proper contact with a header when unmarked six yards out. Sancho levelled 12 minutes from time to rescue Chelsea and his effort could not have landed much more perfectly in the top corner. Trevoh Chalobah ought to have won it with a late header that he powered down into the ground and over the bar. Cole Palmer was then denied by a full-stretch save from his namesake in the Ipswich goal in stoppage time.

Enciso offers reminder of 'game-changing' quality he possesses

Whenever I see the name Julio Enciso my mind goes back to Brighton's 4-1 demolition of Wolves at the start of last Kaoru Mitoma's solo goal, which started at the halfway line, understandably grabbed all the headlines, the big takeaway for me was Enciso's decision-making enabled the Paraguay international, then still a teenager, to provide two assists, but also display the physicality needed to excel in the Premier League when a key part of your game is driving the team forward and looking to hurt the opposition.I was convinced he was on course to follow in the footsteps of Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister, Marc Cucurella and Ben White, and be sold for a hefty a few days after his performance at Molineux, Enscio suffered a meniscus tear in training, an injury which would require two operations and force him to miss over six months of clocked up more minutes on the Brighton bench than on the pitch under Fabian Hurzeler this season, it was no surprise to learn Enciso pushed for a January loan move in pursuit of more game time. I must admit, though, I was shocked to see him opt for struggling Ipswich amid reported interest from Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United.I have not watched every second of all of his performances in a Town shirt. However, commentating over his assist for Nathan Broadhead's goal in their 2-1 win over Bournemouth, which included a powerful dribble where he was able to hold off and outpace three defenders, was a reminder of the game-changing quality the 21-year-old is proven at Premier League level. However, apart from Liam Delap, all of Ipswich's attacking options have struggled to make a consistent impact this manager Kieran McKenna confirming to me injuries to Lief Davis and Omari Hutchinson, the pair who sit at the top of Ipswich's chances created stats list, the need for Enciso to rediscover his best form on a regular basis could not be greater.

🎥 Enciso's rocket stuns Colombia in World Cup qualifier 🚀

Julio Enciso picked the perfect moment to produce some magic for Paraguay during their 2-2 draw against Colombia in World Cup qualifying. They found themselves two goals down after 20 minutes in Barranquilla following strikes from Luis Díaz and Jhon Durán. Júnior Alonso pulled one back for Paraguay before half-time, but it was a moment in the second half from the on-loan Ipswich Town man that decided the game. The 21-year-old avoided numerous challenges from Colombia defenders before unleashing an outrageous strike from the edge of the area to level the scoreline. El golazo de Enciso para poner en un cuadro 🔝😍 #EliminatoriasSudamericanas — (@CONMEBOL) March 26, 2025 Paraguay are now fifth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers table with 14 games played. As only the top six automatically qualify for the 2026 tournament, Enciso's moment of magic has taken his nation one step closer to reaching their first World Cup since 2010. 📸 LUIS ACOSTA - AFP or licensors
